Yeah, I was shocked after finding the band in the last year to learn Jukka had left as well as Marko. I am still a little stunned. I don't know what happened there other than Marko had serious health issues to attend to. He seems to have gotten preogressively better at a rapid pace and is touring again; but, he hasn't returned to Nightwish and I'm not sure it's even a consideration long term. His new single with Tarja is really good, tho.

Floor appeared on a Dutch television show called Beste Zangers with Henk Poort, who played the Phantom on stage in the Netherlands. The show is like a contest, yet really for the sake of challenging singers and having fun. Henk challenged Floor to sing this song and, of course, she nailed it with him. They developed a very strong friendship, and as part of her agreement, she asked him to sing it with her onstage when Nightwish was in the Netherlands. He was thrilled to agree and followed up on his promise. He also performed it with Floor on her solo tour. You can see Floor's admiration for Henk at the end when she flies into his arms for a hug. The thing with Nightwish is that foundation on which everything is built is love. Tuomas is amazing as a composer because he write love into every composition in one way or another, but just watch Emppu during performances, running around stage checking on everybody and sharing moments, Tuomas is the brain and the soul of the band, but Emppu is the heart. Don't'cha just love the tasteful shredding he does at the end?

Henk Poort is a well known Dutch singer who played/sang the role of the phantom in a long running Dutch musical production of The Phantom of the Opera. He has also appeared in Dutch productions of Les Miserables and Sweeny Todd among others. He first sang this duet with Floor Jansen on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. (Floor is also Dutch after all.) Henk was invited to join Nightwish for this concert in Amsterdam on the strength and popularity of their earlier performance on Beste Zangers.

That Henk would get to sing it with Nightwish was a condition he made for his agreeing to do it on the show. It wasn't supposed to be so long between performances but the global p... interfered as it did with so many things. Floor was a fan of his from her teenage years and he did his usual great job. His rendition of the Sound of Silence that he did on Beste Zangers is also worthwhile. Unlike what many people assume from the setting, BZ is not a competition. Many singers from different genres are brought together. They select songs from the other participants or songs with meaning for the other participants and each week one of the participants is on the couch with the host while the remainder of the participants sing their selection to the one being highlighted that week. Floor actually opened with the song Vilja Lied (German) as her contribution for Henk. It is a song that was a favorite of his father that his mother often sang for him. That was the introduction or Floor to a wider audience. While Nightwish is well known in much of the world it was not really popular in the Netherlands. Basically, the majority of the participants only knew that she was a singer in a metal band so they did not know what to expect. Of course the Valkyrie blew them away.

Henk Poort (67) played the Phantom in the original musical and was considered by Andrew Lloyd Webber to be one of the best. Marko brought a different character to Eric, the Phantom. Floor was much closer to the original as hers is a classic voice not Tarja's operatic style. But both great in their own way.

Almost correct and good points, the reason Floor's voice is closer, is because they are intentionally singing a different version of it, that is a mix between the original and Nightwish's version. Most likely due to Hank's skillset compared to Marko Floor's tonality is also closer to the iconic voices who have performed Christine, while Tarja's voice is extremely rare. The technique is a non-issue for both singers, Tarja is extremely versatile singer as well (ofc not like Floor is, but who is?) she just didn't use it as much in Nightwish. But even during Nightwish, Tarja showcases a plethora of versatility and techniques outside of her main lane You point out a great point however, that even though the name is Phantom of the Opera, it is not an opera, but a classical theatrical play about an Opera, and uses a much more approachable style that is closer to musicals than an actual opera

The Tarja version is exhilarating, partly because Marko's Phantom is sinister and aggressive, and Tarja'a voice is more operatic, darker, and has a richer timbre up high. Floor's version with Henk is more traditional, not exciting in comparison

Strangely, Nightwish was known for Phantom but never sang it with Floor while Marco was there. Floor sang it with Henk on the Beste Zangers tv show then in her solo shows before bringing it back to Nightwish for a few guest performances. Personally I prefer Henk's more traditional but heavier phantom over Marco's screamier one. The original has a fantastic atmosphere though.

I saw a comment once where Marko supposedly said "Thank God I will never have to sing that song again" after the End of an Era concert and the firing of Tarja. My guess is that because of that negative memory Marko and the rest of the band weren't interested in doing it again. They probably agreed to do it again with Henk as a favor to Floor and their fans.

The Tarja version is how i first heard Nightwish back in early 2000's. My Mom had their CD. I loved this version. But i didn't follow them much. A few years ago i saw a reaction video (my first ever reaction video) was GLS with Floor. I ran to my Mom and showed her. She was so excited. Floor is the best. The beginning of her version is amazing. I actually like their Beste Zengers version even better. But Marko's is my favorite still. Ive listened to Phantom of the Music music many times throughout my life. Glad you did a double feature! 😊

You really should watch the Phantom! When Andrew Lloyd Webber gave free online access to some of his musicals during the pandemic we watched the Phantom on tv and even my kids (then 8 and 10) loved it. It is a masterpiece! Hello guys! Nice video reaction from you - good job! 🙂 Floor and Henk are great, but this performance with Tarja and Marko is another level. Tarja's full colour of the voice is more matching to this song. And Marko? I was killed by his performance in this song when watching this video for the first time. Henk is really good, but Marko has a big voice power, wide range, huge lungs (long breath) and so much energy, which he's adding into the performance. Marko's Phantom is not just a fanatic singing teacher - he is a villain and evil killer who loves opera and Christine. This Tarja's and Marko's version is the best version of this song ever. I love Tarja, Anette and Floor, but every of them have their songs they sing best, and no other versions of their songs are better. And this song belongs to Tarja (and Marko). Anette and Floor do have another songs.

Marko and Jukka on the drums were the deciding factors for me, and that gave the version with Tarja the slight nod. When it comes to whiskey and ice-cream, split the difference and go for Häagen-Dazs rum raisin ice-cream. BTW, as kids we tried making our own rum raisin ice-cream one summer. But we put so much rum in it, it couldn't freeze. Best milk shake ever.

These are actually two consecutive performances of this song for Nightwish… nearly 19 years apart. This was the last time Nightwish played it, which was one of the covers on one of their studio albums with Tarja, at Tarja’s last show in 2005. The version with Floor was last year, with Henk Poort, THE Dutch Phantom, and one of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s favorites in the role. Floor had performed it with him on Beste Zangers, and a couple of her solo shows. She promised they would sing it with Nightwish one day. The Amsterdam shows last year, it cam to fruition. And they kept it a surprise as best they could, it was not listed on the playlist and had only rehearsed it under wraps. Keep exploring Nightwish!

Keep in mind - "The Phantom of the Opera" is a musical, not an opera. The opera mentioned is part of the story about the main character, an opera singer (Christine)

Having Marko singing the part of the Phantom makes the 2005 version more individual. Because Floor's voice is more suited to a musical theatre sound - and Phantom is a musical, nothing to do with opera other than the name and being set in an opera house - and Henk has a long career history in musical theatre. So, points for authenticity. And Floor kills that final note with remarkable sustain. The other thing is that the way in which Tuomas's arrangement metals up a musical theatre song is terrific - the band also kill it on both versions.

I genuinely think that (a scoop of ice crewm with a shot or two of whisky) would be good. (I am not being sarcastic.) Particularly as an afters and chaser in a pub meal. Mmm. Of the two versions I prefer the one with Tarja and Marko. Aside from Marko's phantom, I felt the first had more energy, although to be fair I don't know what Floor's health was like then (she has been through a lot in the last few years although thankfully shes doing well now) so her more subdued performance may have been necessary and it still worked. She sings absolutely beautifully though. Interestingly, I think her take on Christine is actually closer to the original play than Tarja's ( I say this as she is the one with the most varied singing styles usually) although I love Tarja's rich voice in this. Interesting to see Troy also on the guitar in this. I have only usually seen him on that if he is using the e-bow or in paired down accoustic performances. I haven't seen many performances since Marko left, though. I know Marko was primarily the bass player but he would sometimes play guitar instead of or alongside Empu (usually in an acoustic fashion) on specific songs, so I wonder if Troy is filling in that niche now that they have a new bass player. It's not unusual to see two or more guitars (not including bass) in rock bands of course, just not something I see often with Nightwish as Empu will fulfil rhythm and melody roles and other instruments (keyboards and sometimes Troy's bosouki, etc) will fill in the rest.

true Nightwish fans do not compare or rate the three different singers.....none are "better"; none are "worse"......all of of them are extremely beautiful and talented ladies; and I love them all.....on the second version, there had been a 17 year gap in the performances.....the Tarja version was from the DVD "End of an Era", which was Tarja's last performance with the band (in 2005)......the Amsterdam version was in 2022.......

I have listened the dutch version now perhaps 60-70 times. For me it is still lame. Henks attempt to be sinister is just awkward. Their voices don't chime, and Floor is just whining. She is holding back like saving her air, not letting go. Then she uses all the air in that long last note. That didn't help no more. In every aspect way worse than the 2005 rendition which is full of pure and raw energy by the whole band an both singers.

I agree with you, I put myself through the Floor/Henk version from time to time to see if I change my mind but no: I find Floor's artificial sound cringe, she doesn't have the voice to sing Christine and Henk just doesn't deliver the gritty contrast he is supposed to bring. Tarja and Marko's performance is perfect, no comparison.

Marko is an INCREDIBLE Phantom in his own right. So sinister, so menacing! Then of course Henk WAS Erik “The Phantom” for many years on the Dutch stage. And then Floor and Tarja? Thank God we really don’t have to choose! There are two things though that make the Floor/Henk performance a bit extra special. Not better, just a bit more special to me. First, that one was a promise made and a promise kept between Floor and Henk (others have explained that). It took three years, but it happened. Secondly, that performance was in Nov. of 2022, just barely four weeks after Floor’s breast cancer surgery. (The surgery was Oct. 27)

He did the Phantom of the Opera and sang both parts ❤ I highly recommend watching/listening to it. I expect mrs Coach to be charmed by him. The lady fans call themselves Tommys mommies (but honestly ladies, we don't want to be his mommy do we?). And the men usually love his choice of music. He is an old soul with a babyface, but also a good musician. Great fun.

Henk played the role of the Phantom in the Dutch version of the famous Broadway musical. Growing up as a child, he was an "idol" of Floor's as a role model. She first got to meet him in person on the 2019 TV show "Beste Zangers" and was nervously excited to be able to meet him and sing for him. As the opening song of the TV series' first episode, she sang for Henk an aria from the 19th Century German operetta "The Merry Widow," "Vilja Lied." It was a song Henk's mother used to sing for his father when he, himself, was a boy, and it would make his dad cry. She sang it in German and did indeed bring Henk to tears. Then, as the closing song on the episode of the season, Henk teamed with her to sing a duet of Phantom of the Opera, which in my humble opinion is way more fun to watch than this one. You might want to check that one out also. It was said that, when Floor asked Henk to do the duet on Beste Zangers, he agreed if she could promise him that Nightwish would invite him to do the same duet with her during their tour. This performance you saw here was that agreed arrangement, although it took a couple of years to happen because of the Schmoe-vid lockdowns.

Enjoyed your reaction but you still haven't seen the best performance of this song. You need to check out Floor and Henk performing this song on Beste Zangers. Technically not Nightwish but they used the Nightwish arrangement but less metal and more rock musical theater. Floor uses a more musical theater voice which allows her to add more ornamentation and expression to her runs. The performance is also in a much smaller more intimate space where Floor and Henk get to show off their acting skills as well as their singing, something much harder to do on a big stage. Who is Uncle Henk? He is a famous Dutch musical theater performer best know for his roles as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera and as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. He was the original Phantom in the first Dutch staging of the Phantom and supposedly was one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite Phantoms. In 2019 Floor was invited to be a participate in the Dutch singing show Beste Zangers. One of the main reasons she agreed to do the show was because Henk was also a participant and Floor was a huge fan of his. As a teenager she had seen him in the role of the Phantom on stage and became a huge fan of him and this song. Beste Zangers is not a singing competition. Instead they bring together a number of famous Dutch singers from different genres and each week the feature one of the singers and the other performers sing song from the featured artiss catalog or that are meaningful to them. The last show is all duets. Floor asked Henk to sing Phantom of the Opera and he agreed on the condition that the next time that Nightwish was performing in Amsterdam they would sing it on stage with the band. Unfortunately the pandemic hit and the chance for Floor and Nightwish to keep their promise was delayed. However Floor and Henk became good friends and performed this song a number of times including in Floor's solo show in Amsterdam in 2021. Finally in 2022 Nightwish was back in Amsterdam performing in the Ziggo Dome. The fans were wondering if they would do this song since they remembered the promise but no announcement had been made. Then Tuomas hit those keyboards and everyone went nuts. Nightwish had kept it secret (they even rehearsed using in ears only so fans waiting in line wouldn't hear them) but the promise was kept and this performance was the result. Actually they performed on both nights of the concert in Amsterdam. You owe it to yourself to watch the Beste Zangers performance if only for yourself. I think it will become your favorite as it is mine. And yes the Tarja/Marko performance is my second favorite, mostly because of Marko. Uncle Henk is awesome but Marko is the grittiest, creepiest Phantom ever.

I am biased toward Floor, but Marko is without any question an unbelieveable vocalist. he can hardly be replaced on the base (Jukka does it very well, in the meantime maybe sometimes better than Marko), but never as a vocalist. He is unmatched when singing with Floor.

No, Floor and Marko have never performed this together. The Amsterdam version is the first time Nightwish performed this song in 17 years, since this 2005 version with Tarja and Marko. Both versions are awesome, but I agree, personally I prefer the 2005 version because of Marko. Song #5 of 18 in this concert. Original P.O.T.O. composer Andrew Lloyd Weber has seen that one, and he loved it. Longtime Dutch stage performer, Henk Poort has played the Phantom many times. They first performed it together on the Dutch TV, Beste Zangers, in 2019, with the promise of doing it again with NW when they came to The Netherlands. With all the lockdown era postponements it took until late 2022 to get it done. Marko had already left by then, Jukka Koskinen is on bass. Not alike , but YES ,whiskey and Ice Cream CAN go together. LOL

I agree with you, Coach. I like the 2005 version better 'cause of Marko AND Tarja, since both did a great job. The way I see it, NW intent here was to put a metal twist on an opera song...Tarja kept perfectly the opera side of it (let's face it, she's a better lyrical singer than Floor) while Marko played the Phantom part greatly for that matter. The Floor/Henk version, as great as it is, came out as just a heavier version of the original, since both (amazing) singers did it operatically.

For comparison, you could compare it to the original version by Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, who was married to Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer of this song. Nightwish was formed in 1986. Tarja Turunan stayed for 11 years before being dismissed. In 1997, Anette Olzon joined the band and stayed for 5 years before being replaced by Floor Jansen. One song that I really liked from Anette's time is called Bye Bye Beautiful, which could be worth a listen to. Another band I hope you will like is called Halestorm. Perhaps you could start with the song, I Am The Fire. I first saw them live in London in 2015, and they were just fantastic. I have now seen them 4 times. It is reported that Halestorm was the last ever band to tour with Ronnie James Dio before he passed away. Dio was doing a reunion with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, but they called themselves Heaven And Hell. I'm not sure if it is true, but it was reported that Sharon Osbourne banned them from calling themselves Black Sabbath.

The Phantom of the Opera is like comparing the versions of The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel and Disturbed-two completely different takes on the song. Also, just for reference, Iron Maiden released a song called Phantom of the Opera in 1980, but it is completely different. It is worth listening to it with singer Paul Di'Anno, who was replaced by Bruce Dickinson in 1982.

For me there is no comparison. Floor (and Henk) did amazing job of course, but for me this is Tarja's song, and the original version is better in every way. Just pure epicness. Tarja, Marko, Emppu, Jukka and even Tuomas, they all did better on original.

What's not to like (and yeah, you really need to see the movie (studied history but as a side project did some filmstudies (mostly about Stalingrad, and U-boats (hmmm don't forget to watch Das Boot) (but also Steve McQueen and Mickey Rourke's (Charles Bukwoski's) Barfly) and also this little Ilittle known:) beauty Phantom of the Opera so trust me (you're still cool my friend :) (my advise 1925 version !:) Cheers from the Low Countries and keep up the grand work !

Do try whiskey ice cream sometime! It's good (though TBH not quite as good as each separately). It's pointless to compare the two in terms of quality (um, videos, not comestibles) - what exactly do you compare when they are both stunning performances? Longer notes, higher notes, advances in video production? You can, however, compare their styles. Marko is really showing the monstrosity of the phantom, while Henk is more urbane, the monster only showing at key moments (he actually developed his more gritty voice just for Floor, traditionally it would have been clean all the way through). It's like Count Orlok (from _Nosferatu)_ vs. Christopher Lee's Dracula. It depends on my mood, though I admit the uniqueness of the Tarja/Marko version brings me back more often. (Note I've never seen or heard the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical beyond this song, though I have listened to an audio drama adaptation of the original book.)

Easy to prefer the frist version with Tarja, not only because of Marko as the perfect phantom. While Tarja's voice sounds still powerful and pleasant singing high notes, Floor's voice just becomes thin, fragile and whiney like that of a weeping child who just hurt itself, runs to Mum. Not my cup of tea. Did she want to sing or cry? So, Tarja still rules. 🤘
