There's no they in this song - everything you're hearing was recorded by Prince, working alone in the studio with a single engineer. He wrote and recorded this song in less than 24 hours after Albert Magnoli, the director of Purple Rain, told him he needed another song for a transitional scene in the movie.

As others have commented, this is an edited, short version of the song. The full (extended) version is the one to watch. It’s what was on the album. This leaves the great ending off the song.

Prince was synonymous with sex. I turned 12 that year and this video was very popular. Prince was the epitomy of a sex symbol. His music was so cool too. This came out before music videos became concert promos. Music videos were mini movies back then (see Duran Duran). They shot them in exotic locations with good budgets. MTV was very popular as well.

Yep, he was the reason there is a Parental Advisory sticker on some music after Tipper Gore listened to what their daughter was hearing on the Purple Rain album with songs like "Darling Nikki."

You need to watch the movie Purple Rain (1984) Much of the visuals in the music video come from the movie. In most of this video you're really not seeing Prince, you're watching his character known only as The Kid in the movie.

Nice reaction guys, but as far as Prince and as a LONG TIME fan, ONLY THE LIVE PERFORMANCES. He is THE GOAT LIVE as you have reacted to "while my guitar gently weeps"... Ironically, his Superbowl performance of 2007 is the best and tomorrow is Superbowl, will you react to the performance?

It's too bad you didn't react to the "extended" version of When Doves Cry--it's actually just the album version and was the version everyone first heard and was the video everyone first watched. As good as the song is, it gets even ferociously better when you hear the full length album version. And the video for the "extended" (album) version just gets better and better as it goes on.

Amazing song and video! Prince was a genius and it all culminated at just the right moment with Purple Rain from a commercial standpoint. But his music before & after this album were all good but not everything was written to be as commercial. A lot of his music earlier in his career, even up to this point there was a conflict within him that was pretty obvious. He wrote about sexuality & sex often, while at the same time wrote about God & religion, sometimes even in the same song. Reading his lyrics is very telling of a man who was conflicted by the rules religion promoted and man's need for sexual pleasure. His music did change as he got older and the sexual part of his writing lessened and his focus on spirituality evolved. He was neither one or the other and it seemed he had made piece with it. Instead of religion and sex pushing against one another he discovered the both have a place and that spirituality was what mattered. He still sang about God, but not in the same way where he felt that he would be punished for his sins. Prince was a very complex man, very conflicted and often times misunderstood. It shows a lot in his music. He lets it all out and as the person who got you to react to this song said, his parents weren't exempt from being a part of his demons or light. He put it all out there for the world to hear. BRILLIANT!
