The "Bismarck" , and his sister ship "Tirpitz", were the 2 largest battleships ever built in Europe (250 meters long, 36 meters wide, and displacing more than 50.000 tones) and they were the pride of the kriegsmarine (Germany's militari navy) during Ww2. The "Bismarck" set sail in May 1941 to reach the Atlantic and destroy merchant convoys, but he was intercepted by the British and during a brief fight, destroyed the former flagship of the British fleet and pride of the Royal Navy, the worldwide famous battlecruiser "Hood", by penetrating her armor and detonating her aft main ammunition magazine and killing all 1900 members of her crew except for 3 men, and heavily damaged the battleship "Prince of Wales". This enraged the prime minister Winston Churcil who ordered all his ships in the Atlantic to abandon their operations and destroy the Bismarck. In total more than 40 ships participated to the hunt, making it the biggest naval hunt in history. Meanwhile Bismarck, who had received a hit during the first battle, was leaking fuel and was trying to reach the French port of Saint Nazaire, in occupied France, for repair. After 6 days of playing cat and mouse with the British, Bismarck was attacked by airplanes launched from the aircraft carrier "Ark Royal" and hit by a torpedo in the stern, which jammed his rudders during evasive manuvers, meaning that he was forced to sail in circles, just a few miles away from reaching air cover. In the end battleships "King George V" and "Rodney", along side the heavy cruisers "Norfolk" and "Dorsedshire" fought the already doomed battleship and, during the following 90 minutes completely destroyed it. However, despite having all his guns destroyed, and having received more than 400 hits (out of the 2800 shells that the British had fired at it) his armor was still mostly intact and the ship was still afloat. So the british launched another 4 torpedoes and he disappeared beneath the waves. After inspection of the wreck however it had been discovered that the torpedoes did no significant damage thanks to the battleship's excellent armor, and that Bismarck had been scuttled by his crew (although it should be noted that many historians believe that it would have eventually sunk due to the damage received). Of the 2200 men that served on it, only 114 survived. The old man seen in the video is the son of the last survivor, who died in 2018, 1 year before this song was released

HMS Dorsetshire fired the final torpedoes into both sides of Bismarck and then picked up some survivors. There was a U-boat in the area, so they had to leave.... The U-boat and a German trawler picked up some more survivors later..... Submarine photography taken recently suggests that Bismarck was scuttled by his crew. Crew of HMS Dorsethire said they doubted that all of their torpedoes actually detonated - Surface ships of the RN and the USN had notoriously unreliable torpedoes at the time.

Two historical notes: 1) some of the lyrics are the (translated) quotes from Otto von Bismarck, the German leader for whom the ship was named. 2) inside the compass that the older man was checking at the end are the longitude & latitude coordinates of where the Bismarck went down. These guys pay real attention to the history behind their songs.
@rogoth01themasterwizard11

the co-ordinates used in the prop for this video are false, the real co-ordinates are a closely guarded secret as the resting place for both the Bismarck and the Tirpitz are military war graves and are protected by law.

@@rogoth01themasterwizard11 Maybe they used the coords of the final engagement reported by the Royal Navy? Given how long it took to find the Bismark, its likely the ship drifted a fair bit from where he went down.

Bismarck (KMS Bismark) - German battleship, the lead ship of the same class, was still no less famous for its brother-Tirpitz. Bismarck is one of the most legendary ships of the Second world war, as well as being the largest battleship in Europe and one of the largest in the world along with the Japanese Yamato and the American Missouri. Bismarck was launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. Bismarck's first (and last) campaign began on may 22, 1941. Then Bismarck, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen (KMS Prinz Eugen) was to break through the Danish Strait into the Atlantic and begin to sink convoys going to Britain. The first German squadron was discovered by the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk (HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk) on the evening of 23 may. The British battleship Prince of Wales (HMS Prince of Wales) and the battlecruiser hood (HMS Hood) went to intercept Bismarck. During the battle, Bismarck received several hits, at the same time 5 Bismarck's volley hit directly into Hood's artillery cellars. Hood was torn in two by a massive explosion. Of the 1,477 crew members, only 3 survived. Among the dead was the commander of the British squadron Lancelot Ernest Holland. The Prince of Wales tried to continue the battle, but to no avail and soon disappeared in a smoke screen as one of the shells from Bismarck hit the command post of the Prince of Wales, thereby killing half of the officers, by the way the second shell fired from Bismarck hit the Prince of Wales, but did not explode, the British then pushed him into the sea. Bismarck had one of the generators disabled, two fuel tanks were breached, and there was a trim on the bow and a roll on the starboard side. Gunther Lutyens (commander of the German squadron) decided to lead the Bismarck to the French port of Saint-Nazaire for repairs. Prince Eugen was ordered to continue raiding. Bismarck was chased by the entire British fleet in the region. Bismarck's injuries were not very serious, but they caused Bismarck to lose one of his main advantages - speed. The British lost Bismarck several times, but due to the fact that the British intercepted a radio message sent to Bismarck, it was possible to establish the approximate location of the ship. Bismarck left little to the French Brest. Also, when approaching the coast of occupied France, Bismarck could use Luftwaffe aircraft (Luftwaffe - aviation of the Third Reich) to cover. Only compound H, based in Gibraltar, was able to detain Bismarck. This unit included the aircraft carrier Ark Royal (HMS Ark Royal). On the morning of may 26, the Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers flew to the site of the last sighting of the Bismarck. Approximately in the same area was the cruiser Sheffield (HMS Sheffield). The Swordfish pilots mistook Sheffield for Bismarck and torpedoed it. The new magnetic fuses of the torpedoes did not work, and the cruiser remained intact. After this incident, the British changed the magnetic fuses to contact ones. By evening, Sheffield had made visual contact with Bismarck and the Swordfish torpedoes were back in the air. Swadeshi was flying very low and slowly, because of this, the crews of Bismarck simply could not distinguish from the sea. The Suodfishes themselves were biplanes that were obsolete even before they were put into service. The British achieved two or three torpedo hits. One of these hits was fatal for Bismarck - in an attempt to evade the torpedo, Bismarck turned to the left and because of this, the torpedo, instead of hitting the main armored belt, hit the poorly protected aft compartment and tightly jammed the rudders. By morning, orders were given to stop the cars - Bismarck was in the zone of action of German bombers, who did not give Bismarck any help. Bismarck was approached by the British battleships Rodney (HMS Rodney) and King George V (HMS King George V). Bismarck's fire was focused on Rodney, but due to the roll and inability to evade enemy volleys, accuracy was very low. After 44 minutes, all 4 towers of the Bismarck group stopped firing. In order to somehow save some of the surviving crew, after being shot by British ships, captain Ernst Lindemann, who survived the bombing, ordered the engine room to be blown up, the kingstons opened and the ship abandoned. After the fuses were installed, 9 minutes later an explosion was heard from the depths of the wounded Bismarck, which contributed to the final sinking and roll of the battleship on Board. At this point, the cruiser Dosertshire (HMS Dorsetshire), firing 3 torpedoes at the immobilized Bismarck. Bismarck went to the bottom without lowering the battle flag. Of the 2,220 crew, only 114 people were saved - 111 people were saved by the British, and 3 people by the German submarine U-74. Captain Ernst Lindemann himself, as told by the surviving sailors, did not try to make attempts to escape, but on the contrary drove away all the sailors who tried to save him, threatening to shoot (this is so for intimidation), as a result, captain Lindemann heroically went to the bottom with his ship, the last time he was seen at the stern, when he said goodbye to the surviving sailors. By the way after a dive expedition James Cameron, it has been proven that the British torpedo and shells are unable to contribute to the sinking of Bismarck, ie breaking was not detected by torpedoes at the armored belt, but below waterlinie was exactly cut out of the side, this proves that Bismarck scuttled by the Germans themselves when they blew the bottom of the ship and opened the seacocks and not British! Thanks for the great reaction, love it🥰 By the way, I advise you to listen to a new composition from the new album Sabaton - Drednought, this song can be said to be the second version of Bismarck👍

No no, Joakim sounds exactly like that live, i can confirm on my own two ears. The vest he wears is as iconic as his hair and facial hair, not just a prop to mimic a life vest, you can even see the bandmembers of Amaranthe play around with it in their cover of "82nd all the way" that they recorded the music video for while on tour together with Sabaton. The music video is so ridiculously accurate, i think there is actually only one single shot that isnt historically accurate, that being the one of showing the ship turn over before sinking, while in reality it turned over while under. Everything else is dead on, the iconic outline of the first shit it was engaging, the torpedo bomber hitting the rudder while it was trying to escape, the shot that hit the bridge with the commanding officers, the 3 turrets being knocked out of action while it fires its last salvo, the torpedoes they hit it with to finally sink it for good (although debated if thats what did it or the german engineers scuttled it), the turrets falling out of their mounts when it turned over underwater so they landed a bit ways away from the actual ship. Even the before the music video, the barely audible radio reporting of the Bismarck sinking the Hood while the crew makes their way to the skipper (the event that led to the big hunt and eventual sinking of the Bismarck, so it fits the report is played before the story of the hunt is told) the skipper's cabin being filled with mementos from the war (i cannot confirm this but the widely accepted rumor is that the man who plays the elderly skipper is the son of the last surviving sailor from the Bismarck and that the war mementos showed belong to him, again, i cannot find any way to confirm this so i would consider it false). Oh and the name they paint on the ship, Primo Victoria, the legendary song that started Sabaton as we know it. Would be correctly spelled as Prima Victoria but we cant all be fluent in Latin, i certainly am not.

Everyone in the band is wearing their normal stage/ performing clothes . It's been basically same look for over 15 years now. Urban camo pants and black top. Joakim also has the "fake six pack vest", sunglasses and sweat wristband on the left wrist (he actually needs it). That singer (Joakim Brodén) is Sabaton's main songwriter and has been since they started in 1999 (he does collaborate with other people occasionally). Consider that he composed both the "Christmas Truce" and and this one, the man has layers! He also comes up with the choir arrangements that are very big part of classic Sabaton sound. His first instrument as a child was actually a Hammond organ & church organ. He also plays (obviously) the keyboards, guitar and the bass. He started singing because Sabaton needed a singer (1999) and he was better at it than the rest of the band members (but still pretty bad in the beginning). By 2005 when they released their first album, the other guys basically decided that he was their singer and hired someone else to replase Joakim as a keyboard player. Since 2012 they have not had a live keyboardist. Since those parts are often more compicated than a 1 pair of hands could do anyway, they have not tried to find a replasement. Instead they play the keyboard tracks from tapes. Joakim has become a really good and epic front man (who never wanted to be a singer). btw. he has stated that he has never had any vocal/ singing training.

Yes, these vocals manage to cut through my flesh and bones... again and again. The singer writes most of the music himself and he does the texts together with Pär, the bassist and band manager. They are the last founding members and they do it like that since 1999. When they started the band, they were boys of around 20 years of age. Watch a video recording from that time. Jocke's singing voice nearly hasn't changed at all!

Sabaton is keeping it contained and very well executed. I would expect no less. Joakim's voice just mesmerizes, and I'm sold. The battle for he Bismack was one of the second world wars' most illustrious naval ones. Having suffered the sinking of the Hood the Royal Navy chased the Bismarck , around Iceland, towards France, attacking her relentlessly. After reporting the port rudder stuck and unable to turn, the Bismarck was finally sunk by torpedoes launched from inter-war biplanes, Swordfishes. She went under in good order, aided by scuttilng charges, but the loss of life was still enormous. My heart goes out to all the dead soldiers, be their side whatever it may be.

And now with the war in Ukraine, not so far away from all of us in Europe in mind, it was very special. The more now because the younger generations see, watching the media and learning at school what is happening in Ukraine so close to home, how awful war is and can understand how precious freedom is. And a powerful theme too. So powerful that when you Google Bismarck, first comes the ship, then the man (Chancellor Otto von Bismarck). And summarizing the events of Operation Rheinübung (the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the chase and the final battle) into a six-minute masterpiece was no small feat on Sabaton's part. The CGI images are provided by World of Warships, a game owned/published by Wargaming LLC. As in Sabaton's Steel Commanders, the CGI is from World of Tanks.

that song is in a way a great tribute to bismarck even though bismarck never achieved more than one sea victory when it sank the english hms hood ship that was a cruiser and in that brawl at that time which was the fate of the ship and Bismarck was sunk in front of France, and it is alleged that Captain Lindemann did honor with his adjutant at the bow of the ship towards Germany when the ship sank to the bottom of the sea

As a side not here, the name they gave the boat at 4:35 is taken from an older song by the band (from the older set up of the band)

Craziest part of this story to me is the amount of punishment the Bismarck took. It was something like 500 shells and a dozen torpedoes. And they sunk the ship themselves to prevent it's capture once all the guns were destroyed and they knew they couldn't escape.

Bismarck's crew actually scuttled a 51000 ton mountain of sinking, flaming scrap metal. All guns silenced, her superstructure devastated, her main armour belt broken in several places along her port side, her command staff obliterated, internally aflame from end to end, her stern and port gunwales already underwater a thousand of her crew dead and hundreds more already in the water behind her.... All the scuttling did was to sink her a few minutes earlier than was already happening. In the world of boxing the crew's scuttling efforts are what is known as "throwing in the towel", submission of a boxer when he has been punched senseless by a more powerful opponent, and only a deluded wehraboo child would say, "the loser wasn't beaten, he gave in before he was annihilated.", when the truth is the loser had his arse ripped off and handed to him on a plate.
