Been listening to this song 40+ years, never realized until watching with you what the lyrics were EXACTLY about... now I know. It's about the cycle of loving-and-losing a bad habit (whether that bad habit be bad girls or just addictive shit like gambling like he uses), then you rinse, wash, repeat. Moral of the story, some people never learn or admit they have an issue.
@George-kv6gm2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Same here, never knew before. Sometimes it's easier to do the same stupid things over and over than to make the effort to change. In the same vein, it's most likely people will do the same stupid things again!
@simonpanter36272 жыл бұрын
The first verse refers to the system putting people right back out on the street and them just doing the same thing again. He says ' But the hang man isn't hanging, so they put you on the street.

That's a long time to be listening to music still young at 28 but Steely Dan is pretty awesome. Didn't realize fully what the song was about till I saw your comment either though can't remember when I found out about them but it's been atleast 5 years of occasional listening whenever it crosses my mind and I'm in the mood. Glad to see other people watching someone experience music definitely makes the music a fresh experience when going through it. Peace.

How impressive to see someone try to mentor our children. Its sonething that appears to be sorely lacking today. Nobody seens ti wanna bother trying to teach our children. When they have to learn it themselves, its painful. What better way to try & reach them than with music? Puts them on your level & they feel like you respect their opinion. Not lecturing or talking down to them. I had a large, loving family but no one tryed to talk to me. I was lost. I didnt understand how the world worked & I never got in step. I was responsible & suppirted myself but I made all the wrong choices, burned my bridges. You cant go back. I,ve never married or had children. Wonder how different my life wd have been if someone mentored me? God bless you! Thank you. He is blessed to have you for a brother.

It was a sitar an India version of a guitar with a very distinct sound, and your brother was correct the definition of insanity is to do the same thing repeatedly and expect different results,
@eximusic2 жыл бұрын
Not a sitar, it was a guitar called an Electric Sitar by Coral/Danelectro. Nothing Indian about it. Just has a buzz bridge like a sitar's jiwari to make the strings buzz and "sound" like a sitar. Other than that it's 6 strings and tuned standard guitar tuning. Sitar's are completely different. It's a guitar.
@clintonsmith51632 жыл бұрын
Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results seems more like the definition of stubbornness, rather than insanity. To me, insanity is being unable to distinguish between the rational and the irrational, the real and the unreal.
