Seriously, I'm Aussie and half of them I couldn't even tell you if I knew them or not. I'm talking about dozens of one hit wonders there, or maybe this is someone's personal list of bands they like. The 80s and the 90s were big for us musically. The 90s had Silverchair, powderfinger, grinspoon, Spiderbait, the living end, U Am I, killing Heidi, plus many others which were constant festival line ups. Every school holidays there'd be a Big Day out, royal Easter show, falls festival, groove in the moo, rock it, many other multi band shows. 90s was fun and very entertaining.

U Just took me to my fave place. the BDO was so legendary bc we got to see so many world class aus acts. alex lloyd!!! i just remembered seeing him there. but the list of those bands u lisyed really shows how ripped off AUS WAS, OVERSEAS. peace. falls.......ahhhh

Yeah I think a lot of these acts were exports or mainstream and personally I've always been into 70s,80s pop and rock and I was a child of the 90s alternative era so a lot of these artists were unknown to me as well. Also, this list was a lot of very famous artists but not their best songs so, yeah.

The biggest act left off the list is unforgivable - The Bee Gees. Yes, they were born in the Isle of Man, but migrated to Australia as kids in the 1950s. They grew up in the Brisbane bayside suburb of Redcliffe, did their first gigs at the local speedway in the late 1950s and got their break appearing on Brian Henderson's 'Bandstand' on Channel 9 in the early 1960s. Please remember this 150 is just some guy's opinion, there is no other qualifications like sales of music or concert tickets. One-hit wonders are rubbing shoulders with folks who have 50yr long careers on this list, and there are both notable omissions and bias towards particular genres.

I haven’t got into the Top 100 yet, but I can already say that a lot of these artists are not shown performing their most famous song. Surely for Helen Reddy you’d choose ‘I Am Woman’ or for for Ted Mulry it would be ‘Jump in my Car.’ As for Jason Donovan’s ranking, he was only one of the first in a long line of soapie stars to become manufactured pop stars, even though he may have been huge in the UK. Keith Urban is big in America but not so much here where we have a lot of stay at home country musicians who have a loyal following. And, yes, John Paul Young recorded the original version of ‘Love is in the Air.’ He was a huge local pop star in the 1970s and that song was written and produced by the hit factory of Vanda and Young, former members of Australia’s version of the Beatles, the 1960s band The Easybeats. George Young was the older brother of Angus and Malcom from AC/DC.

And all of them have charted higher in the US than the three acts you mentioned. 16 has five Billboard #1s by herself, Jimmy's highest was a duet with INXS that barely cracked the top 50. This isn't a list for Australians.

The Teskey Brothers, Matt Corby, Guy Sebastion, Taj Farrant, Kasey Chambers are all current artists who have been receiving plenty of Utube reactions lately. There are a few artists missing from this list like The John Butler Trio, Busby Merou, Angus and Julia Stone, Richard Clapton, Brian Cadd, Russel Morris to name just a few and some I personally wouldnt have included but music is really a matter of taste.. If you want to see up and coming talent check out Taj Farrant who has only just turned 14 he started leaning the guitar when he was 7 and recently released a new single titled Crossroads which immediately went to No1 on the world soul music charts. He cant even read music just plays by ear he has already performed with the likes of Santana, his younger sister is also a pretty accomplished drummer.

It's just someone's list and music is a personal taste. I don't even think it's a properly ranked listed, just mostly grouped and numbered until it gets to the end. There were some bands there I hadn't heard of, but that's fine. Some more potentials to add to the list are Vanessa Amorosi, The Rubens, Do Re Mi/Deborah Conway, Hilltop Hoods, Flume, The Jezabels etc.

This list was strange..some relatively unknowns put ahead of some legends and didn't feature greatest hits of the artists. 😮 Would have put Easybeats much higher considering how groundbreaking they were for their time and the ongoing influence. If George Young hadn't been a success and bought guitars for his brothers Malcolm and Angus, we may never have had ACDC! And Vander and Young wrote "Love is in the Air. I still think 'Friday on My Mind' was one of our all time great Aussie anthems.

Completely agreed. Some of the picks for band's songs on here were frankly bizarre. As if for Flash and The Pan you wouldn't put Hey St. Peter or Down among the Dead Men. Surely for Spiderbait you'd put Shazam. Etc. etc. Really odd.

John Farnham should have been No.1 in my opinion, ACDC, Skyhooks and Sherbert and The Seekers should have been higher up the ladder and others should be there too - Angels, Rose Tattoo, Divinyls, Chisel and Olivia Newton John, to name a few. I've heard of most of these.

Billy thorpe and the aztecs, Mama. A live recording on GTK, the ABC, 1971. One of the best, no, the best heavy rock performances recorded live ever, full stop. Divynils, boys in town. You went past this song in your first music clip. You'll love it. 80's. People who react to it go WTF! Australia had a huge pub scene where lots of bands cut their teeth. The 80's made Australia, not just bands but movies. All of a sudden Australia was making a name for itself. You've only scratched the surface here I'm afraid. I'm surprised by what's been omitted.

I was in the audience for Thorpie at the ABC's Gore Hill studio. He was late and everybody had to stand around waiting outside for hours. They had pulled in Carson (Broderick Smith's band) to perform on the tray of a truck to ease the tension of the crowd. Thorpie finally got there about 4:30 and it was the loudest live music I ever heard. Any Australian rock list is incomplete without Johnny O'Keefe. He was rocking hard in the mid-50's so he pre-dates all the British bands. He was already well-established when he performed beside many of the original American rock 'n' rollers brought to Australia by Lee Gordon at Sydney Stadium.

Hello Simon, it's not insignificant that Rage has referenced Johnny O'Keefe from the start. I completely missed Thorpie. At the time his earlier 60's material put me off but I was certainly aware of his change in direction. I was a big fan of GTK when I was a youngster. I only came to appreciate Billy fairly recently. As an aside Billy is the earliest exponent of moon walking I've seen. Bandstand, Poison Ivy 1964.

One thing that is surprised me is that Ian Moss & Jimmy Barnes got single credits as well as Cold Chisel but they only listed Sherbet as a band but didnt include Daryl Braithwaite on his own. Daryl had many classic songs as a solo artist like Horses, One Summer & As The Days Go By. All three are great Aussie classics

Such a travesty that Thirsty Merc wasn’t on the list, ‘Summertime’ in particular was a huge hit and known internationally too especially because it’s the theme song to tv show ‘Bondi Rescue’. Personally I would have loved to have seen Ben Lee and Bernard Fanning on the list.

Some may argue, but what about the Bee Gees? I know Barry Gibb said in a 2012 interview he considers Australia his home. There were a lot of acts in that video I wish weren't from Australia, some of that thrash metal they can keep, but hey, each to their own. It would be interesting to maybe react to a few more of the more famous songs, or maybe the artists in general.

So a few I had forgotten about, a few I didn't realise were Australian and most after 2010 I didn't know. I thought the song choices for some of the groups were strangely not their most well known. I think the person who compiled the video had a love of the heavier stuff because there were far more bands of that nature than I had imagined and missing a good few of what I would have thought were more well known - Marcia Hines, Helen Reddy, Kate Cebrano, Mental as Anything and lots more.

If you go back to the late sixties, early seventies. Australias first ever singer to top the American charts was Russel Morris singing On The Wings Of An Eagle. He has the most amazing voice. You also had from the same era, singers such as Brian Cadd, Doug Parkinson. An amazing list of singers from that era.

Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs was the singer you said, “Good voice”. Billy Thorpe also wrote two books, ‘Sex, Thugs and Rock’N’Roll’ and ‘Most People I Know’(think that I’ll crazy). Both are a quick enjoyable stories of life at the top and getting there, laugh out loud read. The second one was more immersive. Do watch his music videos . His concept Album was genius.🎸

The female singer is Judith Durham (1943 - 2022). I'd suggest; "I'll never find another you," "Morningtown Ride," "A World of Our Own," "The Carnival is Over," or their version of, "I am Australian," (Bruce Woodley co-wrote this one) , also, "Red Rubber Ball," a hit for The Cyrkle, when Paul Simon, "Forgot," that Bruce Woodley had co-written that as well.

The 1st ones at #150, 'The Cockroaches' became the world-famous Wiggles. They had only limited success as a rock band so decided to start a children's act ... the rest is history.

The numbers of the artists are so mixed around, so I assume that it's not ranked, just random. Also, I'm surprised Taxiride isn't on the list, seeing as songs like 'Get Set' and 'Everywhere You Go' were pretty massive, also The Angels, Goanna, Choir Boys, The Church, Hilltop Hoods, were all pretty big. A lot of the songs they picked where not the most well known for the groups/singers either. Some were just 'who?' - mostly the metal groups. lol.

LRB the MOST international awarded Aussie band. with a truck load of top 10 hits in the US and number ones here in Oz. Sinatra and Lennon both considered "Reminiscing' one of their favourite songs ever. Glenn Frey (Eagles) said publicly that LRB were the greatest vocal band in the world. INXS never came close to them. AC/DC were fantastic, true rockers but didnt have as many hits as them despite being incredibly HUGE.

The Chats are excellent, yes Smoko is a relegion for any tradie workers. They are from Nambour in Queensland a couple of hours north of Brisbane. Another few song of theirs are: Pub Feed, Nambored and Dine n Dash. My favourite bands from Australia, strangely enough are 3 x Queensland bands. The Saints (Chris Bailey was their singer RIP Chris) The Go Betweens and Powderfinger. INXS from WA were very good and from the past Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and The Easybeats. I just remembered one guy who is rated by many as the best guitarist in the world - Tommy Emmanuel. Maybe it's because he's not in a band or isn't a singer ? He used to play in John Farnham's band once if that counts... as well as playing with his brother Phil. Don’t know who made the list but I’m obviously not the intended demographic. Haven’t heard of half of them and I have a pretty diverse taste in music. John Paul Young was born in Scotland and came to Australia age 11, Love is in the Air was one of his first hits. You should check out yesterday’s hero as well. He is one of our icons 😊 A better way to get an idea of our current taste is Triple J’s hottest 100. It’s voted by the public every year. Rick Springfield, Jessie’s Girl, started in Zoot, went solo, Jessie’s girl was a hit in the US, he moved there in 2006 and prob had more Sussex’s there than Oz after that. Now hosts a radio show. Crowded House are a bunch of Kiwis but we do like to nick all the good stuff from New Zealand 😊 Growing up Sherbet (and lead singer Daryl Braithwaite) was my fav band, heaps of good songs, few anthems

I'm kinda disappointed that this list didn't include either Jon English or Marcia Hines. Jon was a rock singer and actor who gained fame as the first person to play Judas in Australia's Jesus Christ Superstar, once declared by Tim Rice to be better than Broadway. Marcia was Mary Magdalene at the time and was the first performer in Australia to go platinum.

Mate, not knocking him (nor his great talent) but Jon English was born in London, England and moved to Aussie when he was in his teens. Same transfer-in situation for Bee Gees, Olivia NJ, Keith Urban, Jimmy Barnes, Finn Bros (Crowded House) and a whole heap of other singers and front men. Young Bros of ACDC. etc Bee Gees didn't make it big until they moved back to England when oldest was 19.

I agree with some others ... as an Aussie, this list is reflecting a very particular taste - those heavy metal artists don't feature on the weekly top ten often. But it was a heroic task after all.
