I like very much of your reactions to these old patriotic songs and how you get emotional there 6000 km away.

My grandfather was fighting in one of three wars against the communist sovjet in WW2. He was in the frontline at the Lake Ääninen mentioned in the song. RIP Grandpa

The thing is, because we are a small nation and nearly every male of age (and some under age) fought for or defended our independence we are all descendants of veterans (or vey closely related to one) so even if we have been independent over a 100 years now and fought to defend that independence 80 years ago it’s still very close to many of us. My grandfather, like so many others, was a veteran. And since most of our veterans are now resting in peace it’s our job to carry their legacy to their great grandchildren and beyond. We are a patriotic nation just perhaps not the happy parade kind of patriotic but the solemn respectful kind.

Title:Evakon laulu English lyrics Channel:Tomi T It is from Finnish tv-show where each mucicians do their own version of the other's song. Or in this case there was special episode (X-mas music ) i think? It is an song that tells story of Karelian evacuees from 1939 and 1941

There are some Finnish "war songs", "Elämää juoksuhaudoissa" is maybe the first from WWII, recorded in 1940. The music is an older Russian waltz from the beginning of the 20th century. Apparently they asked someone to make a Finnish "war waltz", so Äänisen aallot was composed. (The composer, "of Polish, Czech, Georgian and Romanian ancestry through his father and of Dutch and Swiss descent through his mother", had been born in Saint Petersburg, his family then escaped the Bolshevik revolution to Finland.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/en3KmmNjfsaFec0 kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmnRgpaBodZ0j7c

i think that song was made to make us remember our veterans and to help collect monetary help for them. when in army i participated on one trip to help them and saw simo häyhä and managed to make him uncomfortable by reacting to his wound (didn't mean to) but ithought that must have hurt. anyway i turned to look at something that caught my attention and when i looked back he wasn't anywhere to be seen as i would have apologized if i made him uncomfortable. at the time i had not realized he was häyhä but some other veteran said it must have been. one of life's regrets but he died soon after. our marches are more bloodthirsty from what i have heard.

I made Vain Elämää Evakon laulu on my channel. This one really should be using original video for more effect.

English translation wasn't spot on, but ok. It's difficult to translate certain phrases/expressions and often translations go a bit wrong.

The most emotional f this all, is that the one singing this song is Veterans of WW2. They are basically singing of themselves, and it's hard to listen to, because most of them aren't around today... These people where really our brothers, even if most of them where our relatives/grandfathers 😢
