I was there...The US (as in you and I) Festival, Glen Helen Park, San Bernadino CA. This was an unforgettable show...300K maniacal metal and rock fans. Let's see if I remember the line up...Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Triumph, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Scorpions and The Mighty Van Halen! Triumph stood out in this show, but the Scorps., started playing as a group of 5 fighter Jets flew over and I think the song was "Loving You Sunday Morning." They killed and though I'm a VH die hard, the Pasadena boys weren't quite hanging with the Yellow and Black attack (on that day). A young Steve Wozniak was the main promotor.

Ric Emmett still tours, but his voice has mellowed. He is both a phenomenal guitarist and vocalist and was honestly, a step above the other guys in the band. They eventually toured with a keyboardist / rhythm guitarist so they could pull off all songs. Triumph really wanted to be a harder, rock-driven band, but they had some legit hits and the record labels pressured them to be more mainstream and pop. It eventually led to the breakup of the band as it just wasn't the way Emmett wanted to go. My claim to fame? I took a picture of them on tour that was published in Rolling Stone. Saw them in Detroit with floor seats, basically standing room only. The guy next to me says 'you're tall, can you get a decent picture?" (I'm 6'5") This was in '82 and you couldn't bring cameras into a concert. I was a stupid kid and should have realized that someone with a nice 35mm SLR and a huge lens was probably there for a reason. He handed me his card and said 'thanks'. I bought every issue for a couple months until the review of the Triumph tour came out! LOL

The US Festival was the brainchild of Steve Wozniak who co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs (Wozniak was the tech guy and Jobs was more the business guy). It was called the US festival as a direct response to the "Me" generation of the 70's. This performance was part of Heavy Metal Day and Triumph who just met Wozniak backstage asked him to come onstage and introduce them for their performance so if you see the complete performance of them at this festival you can see a very young Woz. Here is the complete lineup for Heavy Metal Day... Quiet Riot Mötley Crüe Ozzy Osbourne Judas Priest Triumph Scorpions Van Halen

Love Triumph! The US Festival (pronounced the the word “us”, not U.S.) was in San Bernadino, California. It was the dream of Steve Wozniak co-founder of Apple. It was Memorial Day weekend 1983. There was a New Wave Day, a Heavy Metal Day, and a Rock Day. Triumph was actually on Heavy Metal day, and performed between Judas Priest and Scorpions. Van Halen followed Scorpions as the headliner (and they were wasted!) Quiet Riot, Motley Crüe, and Ozzy had performed before Judas Priest. The total attendance for the weekend was about 670,000. (And the concert still lost $12M). They paid Van Halen $1.5M alone. It was extremely hot that weekend with temps over 100 degrees. There were videos of the concert released that did fairly well. There was also a one day country concert the following weekend.

This is in Devore, California. San Bernardino County. Triumph just played a Stadium Festival gig the day before in Florida, at the Cotton Bowl (I think?? 🤔) and they flew straight to California, and were slotted in after Judas Priest and before the Scorpions. The lineup in this order was: Quiet Riot Motley Crue Ozzy Osbourne Judas Priest Triumph Scorpions Van Halen The Drum set, the Marshall Stacks, and possibly the Bass Amps were all rental. I think a great next song to react to is, Stranger In A Strange Land, from their album Thunder 7, released in 1984 and produced by Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, etc.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4rRf5iNitx3lZo Also Rik Emmett's virtual collaboration to Red Barchetta from Rush, with Neil Peart's virtual drum tracks. Rik is covering Geddy's vocals, bass, and Alex's guitar parts!

I looked and I didn't see the 2nd song you did from Just A Game. Maybe you took it down since your post song thoughts were cut out. If you haven't heard the title track from Just A Game I recommend it. Another great Rik Emmett vocal. Another one to consider is the title track from Rock And Roll Machine, with vocals by drummer Gil Moore. A cool thing about Triumph is Rik and Gil sing lead on different songs. Kind of the opposite of Rush where the bass player is the singer, in Triumph the bass player (Mike Levine) is the only one who doesn't sing. And it's called the US Festival (not U.S.), I remember watching that on TV as a teenager when it happened. It was a big multi-band music festival, kind of an 80s Woodstock, if you will. Some of the biggest rock acts of the day played it. I was a big Triumph fan back in the day, and I still am.

I only really know a handful of their songs well, but they are a classic late-70's power rock band. I know I classified them as "spiritual", and that is because all the songs from them I know have an uplifting message at their core. They were not a "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" rock band (from my exposure) but played the style of rock. Regardless, a great band. The hair metal came later in the 80's at the trail-end of the metal rock peak...

The only thing that irritates me about live versions of this song is they swap out a really great guitar solo for that instrumental break that I don't think is near as good. But it's their song and what the heck do I know. If you want to hear how they sounded live at their peak, listen to the album "Stages". If you want to hear them when they had to modulate down for Rik Emmett's voice, listen to the album "Live at Sweden Rock Festival". The band's penultimate song has got to be "Fight the Good Fight." Studio version is cool, but any live version is awesome, and an exercise in seeing just how many notes a guitar player can put into a single measure. (Spoiler: For Rik Emmett, it's a LOT!)
