This man holds a special place in my heart as the father of the USAF BAND. I had the privilege of getting to take the USAF BAND to concerts around the DC area when I was assigned to Bolling AFB. The marching band guys were a little odd, but the “airman of note” (the jazz band) and “strolling strings” (the orchestra guys) were amazing folks.

I had them play Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" at my daughter's wedding for my parents who were born in the 1920's. Their ears perked up hearing it. It was the last time they would dance together. Married years. The Greatest Generation.

My Mother and father were married in the 40’s. They would put this on the record player when we were kids and dance together. Mom passed away a few years ago from Alzheimer’s. Near the end we would play Big Band music for her, would always put a smile on on her face. Music can be wonderfully powerful.

My daddy taught me how to swing dance to this when I was 10, I got a cocktail job at the VFW age 18 when they had Oldie Moldy bands. My folks and 2 other other went out to eat and dance every Saturday night. The bands learned quick that when I gave them the nod, play this. I would put down my drink try and Daddy and I would be on the floor! Damn I made a ton on of tips. The regulars loved it and knew if they wanted their drink so bad, they could just go grab it. I'm 60 now.

This is big band music of the 40s. The folks of WWII were entertained by this style of muaic. A lot of people associate it with their parents or grandparents. Also, you should look up Glenn himself. He left a huge music career to join the military and fight for freedom. He died in a plane crash, in the English Channel, I believe.

Got to see a modern version of this band a few years ago and did I really enjoy it. My Granpa listened to his music and other bands from that era and that’s where I got it from. That and old movies from the 30s and 40s

The Glenn Miller Story was made in the 1950s. Photo there is Jimmy Stewart who played Glenn who was lost over English Channel. Good movie. My dad was in the Air Force stationed in Nevada when film was made. He hated the fact that all leave was cancelled and they had to march before Hollywood cameras all day long!.

Speaking of tributes to Moms, this is the very last tune my Mother, Stella, and I jitterbugged to in late Summer of 1993. Unfortunately, her legs, feet, and back were too sore to ever dance again. She left this planet in January of 2006, and I still miss her every day. When my Dad, Jimmy, went to join her in September of 2008, I am sure they were dancing together again with Glenn Miller there beside them... 💞🎺🎷🥁🎹

Think about the overall musicianship of the entire band. No overdubs, no double tracks, and definitely no auto tune. Just about 40 musicians playing perfectly in time and on key with each other.
