Today we dive into Scottish-American rock band GARBAGE. "Stupid Girl" is the fourth single from their self-titled debut studio album released in August 1995. The song features lyrics about a young woman's ambivalence and is a musical arrangement centered on a repetitive baseline & a drum sample from The Clash's 1980 tune "Train in Vain".

I love Garbage, one of my favorites. Their production was brilliant due in part to Butch Vig (drums and production). He went on to produce among others, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. So good to hear them on your channel!

yeah.i always loved this from 1st time listen,song video and her style.And i always had the deceptive sense that she Shirley was Kim Wilde's red haired younger sister.

Even when Shirley was backing singer for Goodbye Mr Mackenzie she just exuded star quality. Pure attitude.

Love Garbage and this song is probably my favorite song of theirs. They have a lot of good ones. First heard them in Gran Turismo... they had one of the songs -- "As Heaven Is Wide". When that song played, I could not be beaten ;) People were calling radio stations asking for them to play the song from the Gran Turismo soundtrack. I picked up their album and the rest was history :)

lyrics went over your head dude, they were brilliant, as was shirley's delivery. the guitar space was brilliant also, the space was a very effective ambiance to the fluidity of the music. "don't believe in anything, that you can't break." your criticism seems to follow this passage.

I remember this song, back from the mid 90s. Never saw the music video, but I have to say that it enhances the experience. Good, cool sound.

They formed in Madison, Wisconsin but not at the University. Butch Big and Steve Marker ran Smart Studios in Madison.

The '90s were good because it was still before the era of autotune dominance. Cher should never be forgiven for starting that road to dominance by musical garbage.

Actually a bit of a supergroup, butch vig put together, Shirley Manson was a backing singer in GMM. Vig on drums but also producer for nirvana on nevermind & smashing pumpkins Siamese Dream & Gish…still works on the Foos stuff. He produced huge artists of the era. They also had a brilliant bond theme “the world is not enough” Production is off the chart. Sorry the guy in the middle is not wise. There’s more music out there today than ever. You just gave work a bit harder.

They weren’t a British Band. Shirley was from Scotland but everyone else was from Madison, Wisconsin

Garbage have many better songs. Even though this was probably their biggest international hit.

They didn't play this when we saw them in concert a few years ago - I don't think Shirley really likes it - but as you say they have lots of great songs so it didn't really matter.
