My definition of a classic song is that you can listen to it multiple times and you never get tired of listening to it. "I'm Not in Love" is a classic song.

I literally got goosebumps from listening to this, and watching your reactions. Even wiped my eyes at the end. Yes, 10cc has been underrated. The first 4 albums or so are all very clever, sort of odd, excellent production, good humoured. 'How Dare You' is one of my all time favorite albums. All that you could ask for in a rather experimental at times, pop group. Godley and Creme went on to produce interesting albums, as well as several videos for other artists. The story of how the group split up is quite sad. Thank you gents for once again doing a bang up job. Boy, this one takes me back!

Another cool fact -- Those vocal loops are all being fed into a huge mixing board. And each note (and remember 16 vocals doing a single note) is going to its own channel. For example channel 12 was an A, channel 13 was a B, channel 14 was a C and so on. During mix down, some one was "playing the faders" on the mixing board like they were different notes on a keyboard. So "bah-bah-bah-baaaahhhhhhh" was someone quickly sliding up the correct faders at the right time and quickly back down, to create those vocal riffs. Also for most of the song, all of the loop faders were brought up to a constant low level to give that droning angelic long "baaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh" sound. There is a great Making Of video available on KZbin. Well worth finding!

I love that you guys are sharing this together. My daughter and I have a similar musical relationship. We've been to a lot of concerts together and share a love of classic bands. She is 20 now. She started collecting vinyl at 17. The first few albums she bought were DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED by The Moody Blues, BREAKFAST IN AMERICA by Supertramp, THE DOORS by The Doors, NEVERMIND by Nirvana, SGT PEPPER'S by The Beatles. Keep sharing with each other and keep sharing insight with KZbinrs. BTW I guess I get it from my mom. We've been to over 50 concerts together ranging from Steely Dan to Santana to The Moody Blues to CSN.

Wow, this is like taking a trip down memory lane for me. I first heard this song on the radio on a beach in Atlantic City back in Summer 1975 while we were on family vacation. My brother and I were 16 years old in high school. When we first heard this we were stunned by the fact that it was different from the music we were used to listening to. This song has an abundance of atmosphere and mood This is a classic, a huge hit on it's release. I thought it was a unique piece of music back then and now all these years later I love the song even more. It is a masterpiece. I love how the harmonies and musical effects build up to a sense of suspense. There is a haunting quality about this song. I agree with the review you both gave and I agree with both your high ratings of 9.0 Really good choice of song.

Eric Stewart of 10cc was a member of Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. In March 1968, Gouldman joined Stewart in The Mindbenders, Gouldman, made a name for himself as a hit songwriter, penning "Heart Full of Soul", "Evil Hearted You" and "For Your Love" for The Yardbirds, "Look Through Any Window" and "Bus Stop" for The Hollies and "No Milk Today", "East West" and "Listen People" for Herman's Hermits. Godley and Creme left 10cc due to creative differences and went on to make more records.

I appreciate you looking into the song's history before listening to it. To many reactors don't seem to understand certain aspects of the song they listen to and then they try to guess the meaning behind them. Stewart's use of the choir tracking makes the sounds of the song much more understandable when you hear it on the radio.

Eric Stewart(the main singer on this song) was inspired to write it after being frequently nagged by his wife that he didn't tell her he loved her often enough(which he did).....After a long search to find the perfect female voice to say the words "Big Boys don't Cry", their secretary just happened to pop her head around the door, while they were recording the song, to tell them that someone was on the phone for them and they immediately knew that hers was just the voice they'd been looking for.

Oh, and the instrument you thought might be a Moog synth was a Fender Rhodes electric piano. Now you need to listen to "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel, which basically lifts the arrangement for this song.
@ReactionsToTheClassics
@ReactionsToTheClassics 4 жыл бұрын
I am familiar with Billy's song and noticed that. On the instruments I think we are both right lol "In keeping with Godley's idea to focus on the voices, only a few instruments were used: a Fender Rhodes electric piano played by Stewart, a Gibson 335 electric guitar played by Gouldman for the rhythm melody, and a bass drum sound played by Godley on a Moog synthesizer which Creme had recently purchased and learnt how to program." As always thanks Applesauce and stay safe out there!
@LeChaunce
@LeChaunce 4 жыл бұрын
Reactions To The Classics Good call on the instrumentation! I’ve always been so focused on that Rhodes that I never noticed... and I’ve researched the song extensively and even tried to cover it. Now I need to revisit my attempt... likely that missing Moog is why I couldn’t get it right. And yes, I’m keeping safe and hope you all are doing the same. :)

Interestingly Stewart & Goldman first wrote it in a bosa nova style and Godley & Creme thought it was crap, so they threw it out but the staff around the studio kept humming it so they knew there was something there and Godley suggested they do it in a completely novel way with just voices. They had their own studio, Strawberry studios, name after the Beatles song, and Stewart was a master engineer and the rest is history as they say. To note Trey - those sounds you mentioned panning left and right on your headphones/speakers were also their vocals - “the low voices on there sound like 'cellos. If you slow the loop down to 7.5ips, a human voice sounds amazingly just like a 'cello. It's got the rasp from the throat that sounds like the rosin on a bow swiping across the strings. Unbelievable. We used the sound on that album quite a lot.” Anyway, as always, you guys do a tremendous job researching and reviewing - much appreciated.

Voted best single of all time in the UK at the time as I remember (I was 13). Of course Bohemian Rhapsody came out the same year and knocked it off the top spot. They recorded this with analog tape. No digital recording or effects back them. They basically recorded a separate loop of tape for each chromatic voice note and ran them through different channels of the board and turned a giant mixing desk into the world's biggest Mellotron. So badass and inventive. There's a KZbin video somewhere about the making of it. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaDblmejodiEpdU

Because of electronic boards, everything now has a certain sameness to it. To produce a song back then required expertise using the equipment. Each producer had his own methods. Songs didn't sound the same even if they used some of the same techniques.

Excellent review of a great & timeless song, guys! The album this song was featured on ("The Original Soundtrack") is also great. Every song on it is marvelous. Have a listen. I would also suggest that you review Squeeze's 1982 album masterpiece "Sweets From A Stranger" and/or their song "Tempted" from their prior album. Thanks! (Also try out The Replacement's 1987 great album, "Pleased To Meet Me".)

Quite the piece of music. If you REALLY want to hear it right, try to find a "Quadraphonic" stereo from the 70s. Surround sound at its best. The other good way is in an 88 or 89 Ford "Panther" car with the High Level Sound Package. There is no replacement for the high impedance speakers that capture the depth in a way new speakers just cannot.

10cc best band in the World for me after the Beatles, obviously. This is how we get I'm Not In Love wef 2019 in the UK, breathtaking!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p33KiKyOqc1rgc0. True ' Sons of Beatles'; seen them 9 times In recent years and more re Graham's Heart Full of Songs tour. And yes I've seen Jeff Lynne's ELO which was fabulous too in Jeff's home town . 10cc biography has been updated: www.10ccbook.com. Both 10cc and ELO feature on vocals and multiinstrumentalist Iain Hornal, check him out too: www.hornal.net. For me the grandson of the Beatles and son of 10cc/ELO is surely the Divine Comedy, songs written entirely by Neil Hannon. Also, checkout Kevin Godley's Channel to see the video to Son of Man, explaining how 10cc evolved, which plays as a gig intro.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics you're welcome. It was so lovely to meet Graham at signing sessions after his gigs and thank him and tell him how much his then 50 years of songs (For the Yardbirds, the Hollies, Hermans Hermits, 10cc, Wax, solo) meant to me, he was very humble - a lovely chap! Iain Hornal current 10cc lead singer had a solo (Yacht Rock) gig in Jan. 20 in his local pub in St Albans and I turned round to see Graham and a couple of Iain's Jeff Lynne's ELO bandmates behind me, nice that they give their support. Iain and his band performed 'Lonely Boy' for Graham as a nod to Graham's Wax days with dear departed Andrew Gold. Graham treasured his writing times with Andrew. Once, at a 10cc signing, Paul Burgess who has drummed with them at gigs since 1973 replied to my thanks "it amazes me people still want to come and hear 10cc!"' Ya think??!! Anyway I'm a gig nut, there's a fair bit on my Channel which I started doing to spread the word about great live experiences. I have discovered the most amazing UK Americana duo called Smith and Brewer who I also feature heavily, E.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGaTqqaOhraMiKc 👍

Every member of this band was very talented and this is a classic song which has withstood the test of time. I have mixed feelings about 10CC because of the offensively racist lyrics in their song "Dreadlock holiday", which was a hit single here in the UK.

Yeah, this is an excellent song. Early 10cc was really, really good. Some of their stuff does emphasize the art part of "art-pop" (One Night in Paris, in particular) so they can be quite weird but, yeah, the first four (I think) albums are probably worth checking out. Also, though I don't agree with Jay below about this being too mellow, I definitely second his recommendation of Electric Light Orchestra. I like 10cc a lot but I absolutely love ELO. Plus, considering that ELO was basically Jeff Lynne, the Beatles connection is even stronger than with Badfinger. They were and probably still are, however, one of the least cool bands in the history of rock music. Why that is, is anyone's guess, because their best stuff is really, really top-notch.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics Hmmm... good question. Loads of options. For something a bit slower that builds up into something with real sweep, Telephone Line or I Can't Get It Out of My Head. For something more upbeat, Mr. Blue Sky is the obvious one but 10358 Overture is about as rocking as they get (they're not exactly Led Zeppelin) and Sweet Talking Woman or Living Thing are pretty much pure pop perfection. Take your pick from any of those.

classic in the middle Big Boys Don't cry breakdownthere was a terrible am edit for radio that chopped-off half of it and it was a waste of time to listen to because the song sounded like it sucked. 😂 all the Aahs in the beginning that sound like buzzing is simply just all those vocals layer together on top of each other. just like Shawn said 29 vocal adds.. they took a page out of the Beatles playbook totally when you listen to the song because from Abbey Road there was John George and Paul recorded three times for a total of nine layers which is why the Reverb sound so strong.

Pink Floyd used the same tape loop technique a couple of years ealier in Darkside of the Moon but not to this extent. I suppose a there should also be a shout out to the Beach Boys and their ability to effectively layer voices to sound like a choir (also Carpenters did the same). It was an oddball track at the time and everybody loved it. It only makes me a little sad because this song was a break up dance at least twice for me, but I did eventually find the right girl.

This song has always been a conundrum to me. The effects of all the vocal tracks is very ethereal, even heavenly. But the lyrics are downright rude. I always liked it and denial certainly is a possibility but I don't think I'll ever totally get it. By the way, I don't think anyone has mentioned where the group's name came from. I understand that 10cc is the average volume of the human male ejaculate. I've heard that from a few different places but never the band itself. Only too happy to pass on unsubstantiated rumors!!

Hi. Not quite a band I liked back in the 70ties. They had some top 10 hits over here in The Netherlands. This song was their biggest one over here. I am not that fond of the songwring qualities of Eric Stewart. His collaboration with Paul McCartney on the album Press To Play wasn't that succesgul. Graham Gouldman is a great songwriter, a lot of hits for other bands.
