To me, this song is about trying to fill the void left by a past relationship. He finds other women, and tries to find a glimpse of his previous relationship in them, but he's consistently disappointed. The video is about the self-destructive spiral a lot of young people go down in the pursuit to fill that void. And at the end, after all the chaos and destruction, he's still in the same place he was at the beginning, both literally in the video and figuratively.

no hate at all but only thing left is it really is for young men, yes women go through hard break ups and tough times all of it but this vid and song specifically highlights how most young mens first instinct is to be destructive to heal and end up hurting ourselves more, no putting down just putting other young men up we are all in this together

My wife passed away 6 years ago after giving birth to our daughter. Every night, I read to her while she stares deeply into my eyes and listens intensely. I know that it probably isn't common to relate this song to a father-daughter relationship, but this song makes me miss my wife so much more. It also makes me love and cherish my daughter so, so much. I know that she won't be like this forever, and daddy won't always be her favorite person, and she will eventually get older -- but right now I'm happy, just spending time, passing it by in her arms.

People complain that the music video is distracting. But after watching it like a dozen times its honestly one of the best edited music videos I've ever seen. So many subtleties that you don't notice the first few times. It's honestly some top tier story telling that seems completely random. The people who put this together are insanely talented. Despite the reception it gets from a mainstream audience. This is the type of media professors should be getting their students to dissect.

Foreal. Tbh I think Tom Stevens really missed a lot of that when he watched the video. I don’t think he made the connection that the singer in Joji’s song is using his current relationship to distract him from his last. Also the pairing of the song by itself and then the music video really goes to add to the theme of living life to distract yourself from what’s really eating at you behind the scenes

The music video gives me a feeling of how young broken men act out in destructive ways when all they are really looking for is connection - often times in our society, the connection between romantic partners (say, a man and a woman) is seen as the ultimate bond - so a lot of energy is put into those connections, perhaps at the expense of reaching similar depths with your platonic relationships - your friends. When that relationship is done, there was so much energy and emotional input 'lost' that they spiral into self-destruction. All the men in the video are 'bonding' over destructive activities - either defacing their bodies with tattoos (not saying it's a bad thing, but it's essentially defacing your body in the same way that tagging is defacing a building), getting rid of all their hair, destroying everything (vehicles, houses), either play fighting or really fighting each other, burning things, but there's moments where their relationships are highlighted even if just for a moment - the texting, the shots of various women in conversation with some of the masked men, seemingly an argument between a broken couple. As the video progresses, the intensity of the externalized violence ramps up, but it only serves to counterbalance the intensity of the alienation of the various guys - you see shots of them alone, lying face down on a mattress (presumably crying) in a messed up house, or huddled up close to the skidding cars, or burying their faces on their hands while a car burns in the background. They're all alone, the friendships and the path they've gone down on, wanton destruction of property and even their closest relationships, they've sacrificed even their relationships for the cheap thrills of their adrenaline-fuelled lifestyles, the quick dopamine hits of new excitement. Perhaps regretting their decisions, or the circumstances that brought them here. The video's violence and quickly-edited nature contrasts with the almost serenade-like melancholy of the actual music - ultimately what they're looking for is that love story. Also, in psychoanalysis, the shaving of the head can be seen as a hint that the person completely gave up on its identity, regardless of the motive (which often happens when some people join a gang. They kill their old self and start living for something different, that's why the video feels unsettling).

A lot of people comment either solely on the song itself or the video, but what makes this a work of art is when you combine the two together. This man is pouring out his heart about a past lover while simultaneously committing self destructive acts. He is portraying the fact that society has forced men to not allow themselves to be heartbroken, sad, anything that isn't anger, and the only way to connect with other men without seeming too close is through actions and not even talking. He is feeling out these emotions through the self destructive behaviors because that is the only way he has been taught to do so. He can't talk to anyone else due to society's expectations of men, and that is why he is hiding the most emotional parts of the song behind the craziest parts of the video. The video itself becomes almost louder than the song as a way to push back these feelings or to hide them. I truly think that this video and song together is a work of art. Yes, both by themselves are great works, but together is what tells the whole story.

As a foster carer of broken kids I recognise some of the behaviours. Acting out is a way to be in control. Almost like, I’ll make bad things happen, before they happen to me. Or, I know you’ll hate me anyway, so I’ll just do what you expect. Its a bit more complex than that, and half the time they don even know why they act that way; but also, every kid I’ve had responds to love, nurture and predictable safe routines. You only have to parent correctly 30% of the time for it to work, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

Joji is offering some of the most exciting journeys in all of music and popculture. Went from a KZbinr often associated with drama, barely ToS stuff and tons of dark humor to a rapper, more just for fun and still within that same space, creating internet trends like the STFU song or Harlem Shake and a few years later going seriously into music and showing the real person behind his youtube persona(s) filthy frank and pink guy. He first tried to cure his own and other people's depression with comedy, until he realized that, both in him, as well as in the people watching him, that was just suppressing that feeling instead of curing it, so he moved on to music that gave the message that instead of suppressing the feeling, you have to accept it and work on improving on yourself. That is my take at least and my connection to him as an artist. He has always been one to release music few and far between, but basically anything he has ever made is gold. I can recommend songs like "Will he" or "Demons" from his debut album "In Tongues", which both have videos that are at least as open for interpretation as this one. (his videos are always nuts) Then there was his second album, "Ballads 1", his entrance into being an accepted artist instead of "one of the KZbinrs that tried music " Basically all of the songs on there are bangers, but mainly Slow Dancing in the Dark and Yeah Right have stuck with people. Another song of that album has reached infamy, because a young guy murdered a girl he knew, tried to stab himself to death and after calling the police to the scene listened to Joji's song "test drive". That is one of the examples where the media was really going hard on the whole "sad music makes you depressed" etc. train. (The story is actually true, and in case you want to know more about it, you should be able to find everything about the case looking for "Bianca Devins") After that his currently most recent album, Nectar, of which probably every single song is fucking amazing. Joji is one of these artists (similar to NF for example), where their whole discography is a journey, so if you liked Glimpse of us, I'd just recommend to go through it all bit by bit. Joji definitely one of the best and most versatile artists that are out there and I have seen very few artists in this generation that are so good at giving you a very specific emotion while listening.

He lost his love and wants to hide his feelings with any kind of stimuli no matter how toxic and destructive in the search of feeling something as strong as the love he once had. I like how the video is used as a distraction which is one of the things that this song is about. The person is using a girl to distract him from the heartbreak of a previous relationship. When I first heard the song the melody, the instruments, the words that are used (like the chorus) it made the song sound like a warm delicate love song but it’s not! Listening to the song again (my personal experience) the words were piercing! The video was a nice distraction to keep me from being too sad at being THAT girl whose arms were used for passing time😢

The song is the story of someone who's currently in a relationship. He claims that she's perfect. Capable of making rain out of rainbows. But every time he looks in her eyes, he only sees his "one that got away". He's trying to fill the void with the girl he's currently dating, but only sees is "her". This results in a toxic cocktail of heartbreak, empty disappointment, and guilt. But he's unable to express it out of consideration for his new girlfriend's feelings. And being unable to express this further feeds into that guilt and emptiness.

It's basically filling that void that never is full, when that "Everything" person leaves you, you feel powerless, lost all of a sudden, I don't know how many people has that, but my mind had this defense mechanism *or i thought so* by just.. going out everyday, living day by day, exactly the way in the video, work was just like "autopilot" mode to me, afterwards, i go to pool parties, home parties, just roam the streets, drinking, smoking, cruising, just no goal.. Thinking that this is life, im living it to the fullest, but it was just.. self-destructive behavior, i tricked myself into doing all this as if i'm moved on and doing great, I wasn't.. till i woke up, some people never wake up from that phase, till its too late..

But he still only thinks about his ex girlfriend and because he can't deal with that, he is being reckless, destructive etc. It shows really well how a heartbreak can fck you up.

When the song was released, I was going through one of the hardest times of my life. I was drinking heavy on a daily basis. Constant fighting with my wife and getting kicked out to 'sober up' (I would just keep drinking). Chain smoking and getting high. I would get a thrill out of sipping on a beer while driving behind police. I was on the verge of divorce losing her, my son, my soon to be born daughter, and distant family. Whenever I watched this video, it would help set me back in a better state of mind - knowing the chaos I was creating was destructive and I needed to get a hold of myself or I would lose everything. Eventually. I went to rehab and was able to get myself together. 2 years later, I am happy to say I am still with my wife and kids - son, daughter, and another daughter to be here soon - 508 days sober. Grateful for everything I have in my life, and this video reminds me of where I used to be.

I used to had this life. I just wrote that, one second ago, and now im about to really cry my guts out. To me this song feels like im singing it to myself. About how much I miss that life. "Her eyes" is the new me, my new way of perceiving life. Even tho, now I feel better about a lot of things, I cant but think this present life, this kinda organized life, doesnt feel as meaningful as the one I had. "And I try to fall for her touch" means to me, that I really wanna feel like I am fine with this life, but it its not, this is something that i was struggling to face or recognize about what "my heart" wants. That is why, when I see into my eyes, this life, I find i glimpse of us, me and all the things and people I had while I was leaving my worst best life. But as I write this, I reach the end of the song, the end of the video, breaks me, because is lonely, you burn alone, no one knows how you have to deal or guide out that hate-love self inside you. But is ok, Im Fine, Ive move on. Thanks for this.

I understand the lack of mainstream appeal , but his is legitimately the most perfect music video I've ever seen. It seems like it should be over death metal, but it hits so much harder over a ballad like this.

I think youre right, the lyrics and video are in such a powerful contrast, yet such harmony. All this crazy sh*t going on, all this conflict, drugs, stress but in the end, theres only a single thing on his mind. At least i can relate. 12cm scar on my right arm, severed pinky tendon on my right hand (thankfully stitched and almost fully healed) etc. When you lose that someone that made your whole body heat up just by seeing them and their smile, it messes with your head so much. Especially when you know its your own fault and you cant undo those mistakes. Took me so long and so many lucky situations + disciipline to feel good about myself again.

To me, the video and song go together perfectly. Sometimes after heartbreak it just seems like all you can do is try to have fun, party, etc. And you get very self destructive. While you may not be outwardly trying to unalive, you just feel like if you die, you die, and it's of no consequence, because who cares.

From what I’ve listened to, the song is describing someone who is struggling to move on from his previous relationship and from his previous life and experiences, but one day something happened that forced them to become isolated from their past relationships and life. And as a result, they fall into a decent of isolation and depression, trying to find something in their self destructive behavior that can give them a “glimpse” of what their life used to be before that faithful event that caused them to fall into despair. The video shows a physical representation of the consequences and experience of self destruction of a person (mainly the guy in the yellow I think) trying to find some type of emotional response or connection in the amount of chaos they involve themselves with.

As you said, that you would be in awe of how sweet and pure and melancholic the song is if the video wasn't there... I think the video was his way to actually tell you what's going on behind the melodies and the harmonies. There'll be a lovely note playing but he'd be screaming inside.
@GransterCh2 жыл бұрын
In the song Joji sings about how he is trying to move on with a girl who's perfect but can't let go of the person he loved before. In the music video we see a group of guys throwing their lives away trying to say they are living life to the fullest getting drunk and into fights, smoking and living in filth, constantly on the run from the cops. But it's a desperate attempt to fill whatever hole they have inside of themselves whether its from love or family problems. They go from jumping around middle fingers up to crouched in the dirt holding their heads, putting on a strong face while screaming inside for help. The juxtaposition is perfect. While I can't possibly imagine what it's like being in the situation and lifestyle they had in the video, I can still relate to it. It's something that's impossible to describe to someone until they have been in a place where they want help but have no idea how to ask for it. The people in the video aren't evil, they are broken. Joji just can't stop making art, easily my favorite music video ever.

Joji’s lyrics and the video describe my life strangely too accurate, almost like a living nightmare, yet a blessing in disguise (realisation/awakening wise). I literally had a bad and miserable stage of my life, where I drifted cars, gta, earned ilegal money and lived in the floor and if lucky with a mattress or the side of a couch, ditching stolen cars and being an absolute lost cause and a bad person that was hurting. At the same time my ex and me were arguing mad and I was meant to be a dad and it all went wrong. And I just spiralled into hate and demise. Wanted to vent out. Thanks for this video lots of love.

what i really think this song and video is about is a relationship that has gone bad, friends gathered maybe even with similar problems and they wanna have all the fun in the world without giving a fuck about anything, releasing their anger everywhere if they need to, doing drugs and all sorts of stupid stuff. like he said like in survival mode almost like letting out all the anger without a care in the world trying to forget and find fun in that and just live. i think that because i want to do that, go somewhere away from people i know, stop caring about them, find friends with similar mindset and even if without much money just live, steal some stuff if needed, spray paint and do all sorts of dumb stuff before i die, just do everything i want to before killing myself or maybe in the process change my mind

I was born in East LA and came to Denver in my late childhood, then grew up in Denver for a while. I ended up in a few houses like this, and the thing that got me through was the love of my friends. I had nothing, but they kept me safe. I got lucky that didn't end up being my permanent life and I can't watch this without bawling because as violent and sad as it is, it's so accurate. There was no safety. We lost so many. I think this song isn't about a breakup, I think it's about grief.

I lived like this for about close to 5 years of my life. Obv. addicted to heavy drugs, Didn’t go to rehab, luckily only charged for minor things… i relapsed twice in the past decade but for the most part I’m doing great… and believe it or not I work with children now. I put my loved ones through hell with my destructive lifestyle… but aside from the pain i caused them, i wouldn’t have had it any other way. I was so lost and in so much pain, but once i realized only thing in control in life were my own thoughts and actions, i was able to pull myself out. Thank you for your review, I hope anyone dealing with loss, pain, or addiction can find your way too.

i really love this song, but the video made me tear up. I'm 15 and in a very depressive spot mentally, and im afraid I'm going to live kinda like this when I'm an adult, I've grown up around addiction through my parents and other family members, hard drugs, alcohol. I've lived in a house like this before, although I was 9-12, fights in our backyard, people oding in our living room. this shit is tough.

I don't usually go for the slow type, or singing music but some of his music yup just can't resist to vibe with it. One of the first songs I started to listen to from him is called Will He and I think it's one of the songs that helped with his popularity.

oooh yeah hthis is one of my favourite songs atm. Joji is my 2nd favourite artist, right under Juice WRLD. Edit: I'm at the start of the video still so I don't know how much he figures out but obviously the video is completely different to the song. Joji himself isn't even in the video Edit from the end: So while I think the way you understood the song is fine, I think it's moreso (yes I got this from a comment on another reaction) it's moreso he's with another girl but when he looks in her eyes, he sees a glimpse of him and his ex who he still loves. That's why he says "I'm only here passing time in her arms" because he can't really "fall in love with her touch" like he says, because he still loves the last girl, and is passing time until he can be with her again.

I've been there, in a similar situation to those guys. It was when I fucked up and didn't want to face my problems, so I just hung out with people who didn't ask and didn't care, because they were probably in the same situation as myself. I lost contact with all my friends and relatives because I just didn't want to exist. And whenever I was reminded of my past I indulged in whatever was stimulating enough to distract me. But sometimes I couldn't find it, so I found myself like those guys, covering my ears and closing my eyes, trying to let time pass until I was all alone again. I feel very sorry for those guys. They truly need help and if they're like I was, they can't ask for it. I was just lucky to have someone who ignored me when I said I was ok and literally took me out of a death spiral.

Thank you yet again for another great reaction video. I feel like the mv shows what heartbreak really can cause and the need to fill the void that they left. My first reaction to the mv was that it's a "tb" to back when he was Filthy frank and that he went through shit back then but this is way more chaotic. The person in yellow seems to be the "main character" if you look how he's tapping with his foot in the car, the loneliness, the fights, arguments and what not is causing him a lot of pain whereas he searches for validation through getting along with chaotic people to fill the void I previously mentioned, to forget in the moment about his once was his everything although in the end of the day (the bit where they burn a car and the man in yellow sits all by himself) it all just comes back to him.

Joji is a master at communicating abstractly through video and audio. The song is about his struggle with love and how he’s with a new person but is still in love with the last one. When he looks into the new women’s eyes, he sees a glimpse of him and the previous person together. The video is a view on coping and self destruction but hiding it to your friends as being rebellious or rowdy. Joji is a masterclass of abstract portrayal
