@qnB27 Babu understands a lot more than we give him credit for, but Dune has a bit much going on with loads of names and terms. I’m not surprised he had a bit of trouble keeping up here, but I was watching them the other day and he brought up something that showed he had not only understood what was happening but its relevance to other things that had happened elsewhere in the film.

To Babu's point, it was extremely hard to come up with a proper setup to film the scene where Paul jumps and falls on the worm's back. Villeneuve explains that in an interview. They had to create a very large platform which they could move and "shake", and then dump large amounts of sand without endangering the stunt double. The end result is immersive.

The director Denis Villeneuve has been a life long fan of the Dune novels since he was a child. This is what you get when the director is an actual fan of the source material, masterpiece.
@Hide_Me6 ай бұрын
Visually, I'd say you're right, but as an adaptation of the novel, part 2 really screws the pooch.
@ryanhampson6736 ай бұрын
@@Hide_Me how so? It’s been a few years since I read it but the only change is Chani from what I can tell and it kinda makes sense, using Chani to telegraph to the audience that Paul has changed. Paul even says she will come to understand in time. No adaptation can be perfect but I think they nailed it for the most part.
@Hide_Me6 ай бұрын
@@ryanhampson673 Dune part 2 changed a bunch from the source material and turned a bunch of characters into their opposites from the book. Chani's insistence that only a Fremen should save the Fremen and the entire dichotomy between religious (stupid, fanatical) and non religious (smart, enlightened) Fremen was invented for the film and was very much a response to the criticisms of the book at the time and current year social activism, it wasn't in the book where Chani was also religious (like all Fremen, and she was even next in line to become Reverend Mother if Jessica declined to take the Water of Life, and that's part of the reason she chose to do it) and she was behind Paul all the way. they added interpersonal drama where there wasn't any (fundamentalist vs non-believer), and they took away the biggest source of actual Fremen drama from the book (Paul's sister). also, the spacer's guild is entirely absent, even though the major reveal of the book is that the guild runs the empire, and they _hand_ paul the throne after he threatens to destroy all the spice. the entire theme about the true source of power is harmed by this change. It also portrayed the Fremen as being much less technologically advanced than they were in the book (as near-luddites sitting under rocks wearing robes and using skylights instead of living in hermetically sealed chambers lit by suspensor lamps, making irrigation tech and stillsuits in factories), to play into the western view of the middle east as being primitive. with regards to how important water is supposed to be, Fremen would _never_ live this way, and it seems more geared to making things seem more middle-eastern instead of portraying a culture in a universe that is so far removed from what we find familiar, where ethnicities and cultures aren't tied to what they're like today. Also, Dennis seems not to have grasped that Fremen are active at night, not day, as only idiot off-worlders do things during the day because that's how they're geared from other climates. also, how the Fremen respond to death is changed also, as they're seen mourning loudly and wailing after Jamis even though a major aspect of their culture in the book is how death is so common on Arrakis, that they don't even cry for them. part 1 covered about 65% of the book and was remarkably accurate with only minor differences, so they had time in part 2 to delve into this stuff that they just discarded, rather than inserting a 5 minute rant about centipedes and djinn. hell, the 80's dune may have been a poor film which still added in a bunch of nonsense, but that film still gave a more accurate adaptation than part 2. It seems like a film made in response to and to appease the criticisms of Dune instead of a movie adapting Dune.
@Trazynn6 ай бұрын
Paul's ascension to the throne is a terrible thing and the book's Chani was all for it. Without changing her, the audience would be watching everyone cheering on Hitler coming to power and be left confused as to what the movie is trying to tell them. Chani grounds that experience and gives everyone a moral compass.
@Trazynn6 ай бұрын
That's also why Feyd is a more 'sympathetic' character than in the books. In the books he's a bored incompetent playboy who is given everything on a silver platter. In the movie Feyd is honourable and merely obsessed with martial skill. It feeds into the question whether it might actually have been better to have him as an emperor, despite how terrible that still would be.
