I just love Ruby's take on this movie! She appreciated the slow build to the action, and recognized the unique blend of archaic and futuristic aspects of culture. Those of us who saw it in theaters have been waiting for part 2 for two years, and the release was delayed again to next March! And I always enjoy Babu's songs--it's nice to have a bit of their culture shared with us, as well. Also, I do hope you tell them (or have told them already) that Dune is based on a book written in 1965, and that the story influenced everything from Star Wars to Avatar.

Having seen all the versions of Dune, and read Herbert's books as well, I always liked taht this one didn't over-explain everything, but trusted the audience to figure many things out on their own. It may take several viewings, but that does improve the re-watchability of this movie and I hope the whole franchise can be done
@WmAnnis Жыл бұрын
I have read Dune and other Herbert works quite a few times, so I am too immersed in it sometimes to appreciate where an audience might have difficulties. I think it's a testament to Villeneuve's skill that this version was very legible to people who aren't already soaked in western scifi (or are already Herbert fans). They got the world very well, I thought.

@@WmAnnis Same here! I think they could have explained Leto and Jessica's relationship a bit better. Dune is a story about cultures; the specific cultures of the space future, and how cultures in general are formed and transformed. Having people from different cultural milieus appreciate this film is not only thematically appropriate, but also a litmus test to see how well Villeneuve (and Herbert) managed to decouple from Euro-American thinking.

Dune is about the white chechen and dagestani peoples jihad against russia. its based on the book sabres of paradise and herbert had the idea to place it in space on a desert planet after he studied dunes for a scientific article he wrote in a magazine. Its about a reactionary philisophical exposition of metaphysics. And the books world is entirely white. Its why the lat right love dune. Stop reading your leftist bs into it. Herbert admired islam because it was a based right wing belief system and he hated communists and supported the red scare.

The Empire has personal shield technology that blocks fast attacks, so they normally use blades instead of guns, and some slow homing dart pistols and little assassination drones that can get through the shields. (In the books, beam weapons also exist but cause the equivalent of a nuclear explosion when hitting a shield so nobody dares use them -the Harkonnen firing a beam weapon at Duncan's thopter was a bit of a break with canon). On Arrakis shields can't be used in the desert, so the Fremen and Harkonnen use guns there. The movie doesn't explicitly explain this, but the hints are present.

Dune is an epic in true traditional cinema style. It is not cheapened with rubbish jokes every 3 minutes, plot armour, or rushed CGI. Though perhaps not perfect, every effort was done with a passion for doing things right, and not with box office the primary motivation. Though Ruby and Babu are unaware of the modern move to "content" over art, it's clear to see their appreciation of the absolute beauty of Dune's cinematography. I think people believe media literacy comes with education. Education helps, but it all comes down to critical thinking and life experiences, and these two have it and id rather watch people with respect for craft than dumb college kids who giggled throughout the movie. Also thinking oh they are tribals they wont understand is stupid since one of the greatest piece of literature was written by a tribal man called valmiki and it is not only revered as a sacred text but also as a literature

One thing that stands out is, there is still FAR more information in the story than any of the movies made so far can convey, and people will always have trouble understanding parts of the story, like the baron's floating in air or Shai Hulud or swordfighting or ANY of the points that the very perceptive woman caught and pointed out, unless they have read the book(s). This movie after all only covers a PART of the FIRST book. I wonder if local translations of the books, even the first book, are available?

Loved your reaction, as always, yes the photography, cinematography in this is amazing, what I like about grand, epic, big scale movies like this, is even if you don't see it on the big screen, in theater, it's the type of movie that pulls you in visually, as well as the characters, and storyline,..the sand worm, like I said even on a small screen, you feel the grandeur of it, how immense it is, the scale of it, this movie is a reimagining, of a movie actually done some 40 years ago, by David Lynch(I do encourage ya'll to check out the older version, of course photography, cinematography, is far more advanced now, compared to when the original movie was done, but the epic, and grandeur of it, to me is still there, even in that old version, and also the movies are based on a book,..), ...like you said, all the sand, the desolation of the planet, it seems so barren, and water aside from the spice, is greatly valued, even for one's very survival, it's not the kind of paradise we have here on Earth, where even if you live in the country, away from a city, you can just pop down to the the nearby creek, pond, get a bucket of water,,,,,no, no on Arakis,.huh you have only the water you carry in your body to sustain you, it's amazing, and I've often wondered how people of the desert here survive in such harsh conditions, nomadic people, no water for miles,.....and yess the story, of betrayal, and of power, those seeking it,..it's well written, and like you, so loved the bravery of Duncan,..Jason Momoa,..truly an incredible cast, as was the cast of the original, Jose' Ferrer, Sting, Virginia Madsen, Kyle MacLachlan, got to give credit to whoever was casting the actors for both movies, ...yes there is much, much more, part 2 of the story is I think to arrive in December, so very much anticipating the next part of the story, the first original movie, I believe was chopped because they(probably the movie studio), thought audiences wouldn't want to sit through something so long, which is to me silly, back long-ago, and I don't know how they did in theater box office, but movies like original Ben Hur, Celopatra, both long movies and actually had intermission intervals for people to take bathroom breaks, think the original Dune, the way Lynch would've wanted it may have been 3 or 4 hours, so the other difference, between the old version, and new, is its all of the story, non stop, not split up in two parts as the new version is, and that's ok, gives more time to develop, play out the story,..I like both versions, it's such an epic story,..so glad you enjoyed it, loved watching it with you, do keep going, Godspeed, Peace ✌
