Lets be completely honest, both were right and wrong. Marlene wanted to save the world, but sacrifice her goddaughter. Joel wanted the same, but wanted to save his adopted daughter. Its proved that Joel was right as the surgery was said to have a 90% chance of failure, and Ellie would have died for nothing. Ofc, there was no right thing to do, but what Joel did was the next best thing, regardless of how ruthless he was.

Marlene, when you’re choosing someone to take a fourteen-year-old girl to her death, maybe you don’t go with the killer who lost a daughter of about the same age. This does make you look at that moment in E1 differently: Tess told her they’d kill Ellie if the other Fireflies didn’t give them all they wanted, and Marlene agreed instantly because she didn’t want anyone getting attached. Oops.

CDG, when you're making an assumption (that Marlene knew full well about Joel's true capabilities and that she knew that Ellie would have to die for the cure to be made, which is absolutely not what Marlene obviously preferred) that is not well thought-out, maybe you don't go posting comments on KZbin like you know what you're talking about.

Exacy! I think Marlene left Joel no choice but to kill everyone. Marlene just assumed Ellie would want them to cut her brain out. That is a huge assumption. How about ask her. Marlene saying she thinks Ellie would want to do what's right? Why is it right? It's right in Marlene eyes. Ellie didn't think she was gonna die. She said after she would follow him anywhere. Why in the world is the first thing they want to do is cut this kids brain out? No testing her blood first of anything? Marlene had no intention of finding out if Ellie would have a problem with any of this. The hospital was barley functional. They didn't even know if they had enough power to finish the surgery. So they have no idea if it would even work at all as a cure. What will they actually do with the vaccine if it works. Would they really give it to everyone? And how will they mass produce it. No way in the world a hour after getting to the hospital. And not telling her are they cutting her brain out.

Even if Ellie agreed to be killed, she’s a traumatized 14 year old. That’s not a decision you allow a child to make. It’s why the discussion around “Ellie’s choice” is completely irrelevant.
@Pandaemoni
@Pandaemoni Жыл бұрын
I agree that choice is irrelevant, but that's a complicated question. If choice were relevant, who gets to choose if not Ellie? Marlene was put in charge of Ellie by Ellie's mother. Joel was only put in charge by Marlene herself, and she thought that would be a short trip across the city, like two days. On the other hand, Joel is emotionally closer to Ellie (whether that is a good or a bad thing). There are no great choices. There are also times when we do not allow the people affected a say in their fate. In episode 2, the mycologist recommended the military bomb Jakarta, a city of 10 million people (including children) and obviously no one being killed would have consented. That was a shock to hear that recommendation, but I don't think most people in the audience thought she was a monster for recommending it. (And the military also bombed Boston, according to Tess and Ellie's conversation later that episode.) From a story standpoint, the game isn't about Ellie's choice...the writers want the audience to struggle with the choice themselves: whether you can sacrifice one person's life to save the lives of many (maybe save all of humanity from extinction). What Ellie would have chosen not only isn't relevant to that, but it might relieve the audience of the hard work of thinking the issue through and instead just back whatever Ellie wants. So, from a writing perspective, it's for the best that Ellie never got to make a choice, as it is ultimately the audience's struggle makes the ending memorable.

@@PandaemoniThe reason choice is irrelevant is because it’s a decision that nobody is really fit to make. Nobody is of sound mind in the world they live. It’s unfair, yet fair at the same time. It is simply just too complicated to come to a sound conclusion. That’s what makes the ending so gripping and dramatic, imo. There’s just no right or wrong answer.
@LeftyConspirator
@LeftyConspirator Жыл бұрын
My thought precisely. Sure, it sucks for Joel to make the choice for Ellie in that situation, but to be fair - *his* choice meant Ellie gets to live and find her own causes to fight for, while Marlene's choice meant Ellie had to die for *her* cause. With no say of her own. My theory is that the Fireflies removed Joel from the situation and got Ellie to the operating room before he came to specifically to prevent his input. Joel isn't an idiot, he realized this and he knew that could only mean Marlene wasn't convinced Ellie would have agreed to sacrifice herself. Also, when you are dealing with someone like Joel Miller, just kill him while you have the chance. No reason to let him regain consciousness from that flash-bang and the whack on the head and then give him every reason to go Terminator. That's just setting yourself up to fail.
@kiwigirljacks
@kiwigirljacks Жыл бұрын
@@Pandaemoni who gets to make that decision!? Ellie does! They’ve lived in a post apocalyptic world for 20 years. Keeping her safe for a few more until she’s old enough to make the decision, isn’t a stretch. But the Fireflies would never agree to that and would kill Joel and anyone else who got in their way. So Joel killing them isn’t an issue for me personally. They took the choice away first. Even if his motives were selfish. He’s been a parent. He knows children can’t make that kind of decision.
@Pandaemoni
@Pandaemoni Жыл бұрын
@@kiwigirljacks I respect that, I fear that would have made for an anticlimactic ending to the show. "Well, Joel, we're afraid we'd have to kill her to make the cure, so please bring her back in six years." Fade to black. Roll credits. When she came back she'd either consent or not, and again, the writers wanted the audience to struggle with the "Trolley Problem" not to have them sit back and watch Ellie struggle with it. They wanted the audience to be, in effect, in the position of a parent having to make a judgment for Ellie, not simply, passively do whatever Ellie wants. So they gave us surrogate parental figures on both sides to sympathize with, Marlene the stand-in mom and Joel the stand-in dad, one on each side of the issue. As I said, from a writing perspective, the show wasn't about consent, the best they could do was have both sides ignore the issue of Ellie consenting, and otherwise just never have anyone expressly ask Ellie what she wants (although I think they implied she _probably_ would consent, but no one really knows). The flaw in the writing, in my very subjective opinion, is that it's all too easy to assume the Firefly doctor is a quack who didn't explore any other alternatives methods of developing a cure, but I think it's the same problem: exploring other possibilities would be _realistic,_ but not a better "story." No one wants to see an episode dedicated to a lot of medical R&D on different possible avenues to develop a cure, or even an extended montage that winds up back at the same place: "we have to kill her to make the cure" (especially when, as I said above, getting her consent or refusal to consent would ruin what the writers were going for in the ending.)

Joel did the right thing as a guardian. If anyone has a kid and these people don’t give you a choice they say how it’s supposed to happen and you have to live with it, anyone with a kid will do what Joel did because no one will let their kid die for a 50/50 chance.

I played the game in 2013 when it came out, and I love how people are talking about the end of this season the same way people debated about the game. My personal view of Joel's choice hasn't changed. Neither the fireflies or Joel gave Ellie a voice to express her own choice. However, Ellie is still in fact a 14 year old child suffering from PTSD and obviously based on her reactions at the beginning of the episode she wasn't in her right mind to make an end-of-life decision. She deserved to live her life until she was a full grown adult capable of making that decision for herself. Joel ultimately made the right decision for Ellie's benefit, even if he damns the world in the process.

It’s all about perspective. Which is why I love Last of Us Pt II. Yeah he’s the protagonist to some, but what about the dozens of innocent people he just slaughtered to save Ellie? Remember episode 8 when that little girl who’s father was killed by Joel was so full of rage? How many fathers did he just murder in that short time? It’s gonna catch up to him.

But the way they fucking connected Part II was outrageous. How were we supposed to know the doctor was Abby's dad? You might argue and say "but that's the beauty of it. Our actions will always ripple through everyone that could be possibly affected without us knowing at all" but fuck that. How would you feel if you killed a random NPC in GTA V and have that random NPC's son/daughter kill Michael, Trevor and Franklin in GTA VI? Feels dumb, doesn't it? That's literally how they connected Part II to Part I.

People can not tell me they would just offer up their child if they were immune, to take the chance that what they think could be a cure could ACTUALLY be a cure. I only heard "the Doctor THINKS" from Marleen is that enough for people to freely let their child go. She saved him, now he is saving her. And the biggest argument is, Ellie wasn't told she would lose her life, everyone can say she would have chosen to do it, but after the love these two have formed for each other, how do we know. I have only watched the play through for both part and never thought I would ever play this story, thank you to HBO for that. March 28th, I can't freaking wait.

exactly "thinks" if they had been studying ellie for her entire life that would've been completely different ball game, that's 14 years of study. But running one test saying oh it's her brain we're gonna take everything her body has to offer, off jump is mad stupid. How tf you gonna go off rip, and just harvest everything that means you only have one batch, one chance that's mad. You need tests after tests, hypothesis after hypothesis and then testing your theories failing, starting over. BACK TO FORMULA OSBORN! like c'mon.

I can see why Joel is the good guy, and can also see why he's the bad guy. He's a good guy because Ellie didn't know it would kill her (at this time) and they didn't tell her. It's not their choice to make. On the other side, it's not Joel's choice to make either. And sacrificing 1 person to save humanity is questionable, but understandable. It was a selfish decision on Joel's end, but I can't blame him either.

There’s no “right” answer…..it’s all about perspective. That’s what makes the game and the show so great. That being said, even if the Fireflies did successfully make a vaccine, it’s too late to save the world because there’s no global infrastructure anymore. The only people that would get the vaccine would be other Fireflies or they’d use it to get people to join them. They would never give it to FEDRA members or any citizens in the QZ who supported them. The vaccine would just be another tool to help them win their war.
