@10.33 the dimension is actually 1.81mm and not 1.86mm

To calibrate the instrument to zero, can one not just lock the barrel and then turn the thimble until the zero marks line up or will that damage the instrument? I find it difficult and time consuming to line the zero marks up precisely by using the spanner, but very easy if the barrel is locked and just turn the thimble to line up the zeros.

This is a precision instrument, even if it`s $20. The barrel and thimble treads are made with great care. The best way is using the spanner. Now I don`t know the surface hardness of the barrel thread or the lock pin but If exessive stress is placed on the lock pin to hold the barrel threads in position, the softer of the 2 might deform, possible both if they are hardened equally. If the deformed barrel thread then contributes to some newly developed wobble in measurements, you`ll know why.
