You are one of the few honest and realistic people I have seen doing these videos. Simple common sense, and that is how I learned, along with a lot of hard knocks to guide me in the right direction. Now I am old and injured both, so I find myself seeking guidance even on youtube. Thank you for the straightforward approach. It need not be complicated, and the simpler it is, the more applicable it is.

I always watched the chest of my opponent because in my peripheral vision i can see both shoulders and most of their arms that i can tell which one they are throwing before its too late. Not a boxer i wrestled and thats how i was taught to study opponents movements. I had a few school fights and street fights when i was younger and i felt it worked the exact same when punches were added to the mix.

While keeping square on, moving off centre 15° to the lead hand or 30°+ away from the lead (out of short hook range) means anything thrown will be telegraphed as he/she will have to reposition to generate a power-punch.

Watching the shoulders makes sense as far as detecting the striking arm but not always the direction. I’ve heard it said to watch the elbows because elbows more accurately determine the angle/direction of the fist or hand. Just an option or additional reference.

I don't agree with this, as a good scrapper will always throw a fake, if I'm worried about a shot being fired i just follow their footwork so they cant position themselves, and actually would watch their feet so i was always flanking, but i don't think there is much footwork in Kung fu

Karate punches, all straight. Probably the best punches in any fighting style, I only use hooks close-in; as a replacement for most elbows [which I hate, as they twist my back out of shape].
@koreancowboy42
@koreancowboy42 4 жыл бұрын
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 I mean elbows are as close as you get to very face to face with someone. Cuz a straight on elbow strike like a really hard hitting strike from that especially with the bone and muscle helping it. Oh man that's gonna break a bone or cause someone to not be able to breath or have trouble breathing. Also gotta hand it to Tony Jaa from Ong bak movie. Gosh I like Jackie Chan, Donnie yen, Bruce Lee, Tony Jaa, Jet Li. Cuz they don't just show, they actually do it. It's part of their lives. Martial arts..... Tbh I wouldn't mind being any of their students.
@rocketassistedgoat1079
@rocketassistedgoat1079 4 жыл бұрын
@@koreancowboy42 Yeah, I've stopped ignoring the elbows, and have three combos I practice on the bag. One of them, in two parts: into the sternum, then under the chin; is brutal and lifts the bag right up in the second hit. Frankly, I'd never use that in a fight: as it just seems like you could kill someone. Results on the bag don't lie. The one elbow I always use in sparring, is a dash-in straight elbow: fantastic for getting in a couple more hits after being off balance following the final kick in a kick combo, then backing off just out of range. In Seido, we're taught to parry their first strike: then immediately counter attack with a broadside. I.e, a defensive strategy: with strong counter attacks. The dash attacks, esp the dash in side kick (the strongest I can do-outranges the straight dash elbow) then allow you to close the distance and deliver a broadside-if you want to mix it up and attack. I still aim the elbow at the sternum, not the chin: as it seems like it would shatter it. I mean, you could always go left, right straight punch then elbow to the face...but that strikes me as something very personal, like: you're trying to mess up their face. I like that karate's clean, you're not trying to kill, maim or cripple someone. So I practice things like elbow uppercuts and side knee snaps: but they're examples of moves I never intend to use in anger.

One great thing to learn from this is not to give a tell before you strike. When you give a tell, you give your opponent more time to react. With my robot (that gives no tells), I keep a general (not focused) view of the upper chest area. This gives me enough view of where to strike on the upper body and gives me a view of both fists. You have to catch a punch from the start because if you don't, it will very likely not leave you enough time to react. Great video. Thanks.

The best defense combat is conquering senses. What I mean when you achieve a high level of practice using the method of senses. You do not even need eyes,you could be blind,eyes shut and still stop a punch,grab,or kick. It takes lots of practice and you need a partner. Some people incorporate objects,such as swords,bats knives etc and swing at your head with your turn. This is the way we train in Martial Arts.

People look away also to see where their friends are at, and some like to make sure their audience is attentive. Further, a person ready to throw a punch often grabs or rubs his neck area. lastly, the elbows often tell what's going to happen similar to the shoulders.

I love Wing Chuns answers to distance. Wing chun counters punching by closing the gap so tight the opponent can't get in the momentum for a proper punch. This is by design. The average distance at which most martial arts operate from one opponents chest to the others is about 3 feet. Wing Chun operates at about 1-2ft. Wing chun techniques are designed to do maximum damage at this range, other martial arts - and your average "street" punch are not. Once you're in that close you have some options: Example 1: Person wants to punch you, move in past their reach, grab them by the head and gouge out their eyeballs. This is the very first, and simplest technique they'll teach you in Wing Chun because it doesn't take a lot of strength to blind someone. Example 2: If you end in a grapple, hold their clothes tight and knee them as hard and fast as possible until they fall over, then gouge their eyes out (or hit them in the throat/face as many times as you can). Example 3: If its a guy, grab his dick and see if you can pull it off - and not in the british handjob kind of way, I mean grip and tear. This technique can be flawed as many people instigating street fights have tiny dicks. IDK, I know it won't always work and you should judge every situation as fight or flight, but these are great techniques if self defense is your purpose and not showing off. They're underhanded/brutal tactics for keeping you alive. To me this is the only real reason to learn martial arts (but I respect other people who devote time to it). I'll be over here practicing eye gouges.

Quick, probably stupid tip: Practice slap boxing with friends, slap boxing is what is sounds like, boxing, but slapping instead of punch, I played slap box for most of my middle school years, and there was this time in 7th grade where someone threw a punch at me, and somehow, my reflexes kicked in grabbed the guys wrist and stopped it dead. I felt like a badass, of course,. So practice quickening your reflexes, and you should be able to dodge effectively.

Looking at the eyes can sometimes be useful. If you are good at kicking and kick a lot to keep distance and the opponent is a greenhorn. If you look at their eyes, they will tend to look at your legs which would allow an elbow or jab. Only useful for going against newbies.

I've trained for 8 years. 5-6 years boxing the rest in MMA. My reading of people's next move become almost impeccable by just kind of intensly focusing on the chest region. if you keep you composure, you can almost see sub signals of what body part is moving towards you. It's weird. Also guys.. if someone is threating you and you don't wanna deal with it and it gets violent. When he throws a punch especially if it's bear nuckle. Put your head down as he throws the punch movethe top of your skull twards his fist. You'll pretty much brake his hand. It'll hurt a little. Also. Yea, no closed fist in street fight. An open hand to the back on the ear would have his brain bouncing around his head like a bowling ball in the back of the trunk.

That's great against those wild hooks, but what about the straight, short jab? Growing up in the City of Chicago, (of course, before everyone went to the pistol) we were taught to never pull your elbow past your waist. Jab, jab, jab! It does work. Unfortunately, alot of these punks knew that too. I've seen plenty of good guys, good self defense fighters get beat because it is nearly impossible to stop a well placed jab. Any way to show us what to do would be great. Thank you.

I was always told to watch the eyes, it's a part of the psychological aspect to a fight and it can give an indication on what they're looking to attack. Use your peripheral for the other tells since you cannot do this with the eyes of your opponent. This will also keep yourself from having your eyes give you away.

A lot of these recommendations -- whether they work or not -- will depend importantly upon the experience of your opponent. If your opponent is an experienced boxer, for example, then he/she my feint (fake) a lot, with the aim of confusing you and rendering you unable to judge where the next punch will come from. What you have to do is be able to move in, not stand at a distance and make yourself a target for punches. If you move in, the attacker cannot rain punches down on you or attack you in other ways. Once again, much of this depends on the experience of the opponent: if he's also trained and capable of moving backwards as you move in on him, the fight will be harder. Keep your hands handy and try and end the fight expeditiously, and judiciously, always.

one question sifu, if you see an indicator and the person gets within arms length of you ,should you start attacking right away? in your video of worst mistakes in a street fight you said you should never allow the other person to attack first, however I don't wanna get charged with assault but if I don't take action immediately I could get knocked out.

Victor cabral Read his body language and face. You can tell pretty quick if a guy is determined to punch you.

dude, tell him to keep distance, you don't have to smell his mouth breath in order to talk.. if he keeps coming, it's on

Victor cabral I'm no expert but it's ok to raise your voice or yell for someone to leave you alone. It might help you legally too if the guy keeps coming. Put your hands up & open & take a step or two back. So so so many men get caught up on ego that they forget about legality (if that's a word). Hopefully a witness backs you up too because yelling draws attention.

Or to avoid getting hit don't stand tall like a tall glass. What happens when someone hits a tall glass? It breaks. To avoid a strike go low not tall.

Shoulders are only an indicator for a big punch, straights don't telegraph like that and feints use that to setup

I have a question what if I see on collar bone of my opponent but he can instantly know where I am seeing? Than what should I do?

Don't stare at the collar bone. As it gives your sight line away to the bad guy. Just scan the area.
