i completely agree that dale carnegie's book was much less about nurturing genuine relationships, and learning a lot about building a network at work this year it added to that 'transactional' feeling i had with building corporate networks. this is another push for me to read the courage to be disliked this year!

Agree, it’s about networking and I really hate the idea of networking vs genuine relationships

I leapt out of my chair when you read the title. I’ve listened to the audiobook. I don’t agree that there’s no such thing as trauma - PET scans reveal long term abuse changes the brain - but all the other tips are good. I’ve never read Carnegie. It seemed too manipulative. Good video.

I bought this book a couple of days ago. I've yet to read it. My intention for buying it is not to learn how to make friends perse, but to understand and connect with people from multiple walks of life. At least that's what I'm expecting to learn from it. At the same time, I'm more than okay with not being everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone is my cup of tea either. In the context of relationships when I can feel that I'm not someone's (a crush) cup of tea, I tend to ask myself how would they know unless they take a sip?

Hi Akta, What you said totally resonanted with me as I had a fear of communicating with others. I spent a lot on books on how to make friends with little benefit/true friendship. Thanks for your honesty.😊

I also read Dale Carnegie's book and I didn't really like it, because I also felt that it's not about making friends, but about creating a business network.

This video really hit home me. So many mind-shifting nuggets packed into less than 8 minutes. I was especially impacted by the idea of not giving a false negative meaning about ourselves or others when having having less than ideal experiences while trying to establish and maintain friendships. Lovely. Giving another the benefit of the doubt when we feel they may let us down is a very loving thing to do both for the ones we care for as well as ourselves.

First of all, I loved the video! I haven't read Carnegie's book but a summary and it made me think that it was about manipulating people in orden to like you, at least the way the summary exposed the ideas made me feel that way. I agree with you! Relationships are a two-way road and it doesn't work if one is trying to make the other person feel good and "important" and the other one just "likes" you because of that, like out of convinience but not true connection.
@RhianeHacker2 жыл бұрын
Ooh I definitely didn't find it a book about manipulating people. In fact my favourite bit in the book is 'Let me repeat: the principles taught in this book will only work when they come from the heart. I am not advocating a bag of tricks'. I also think perspectives can be different for everyone, so book reviews can sometimes put us off something we might actually really enjoy or can benefit from.
@Akta2 жыл бұрын
Yepp I fully agree! It’s a classic for a reason though, it’s about the art of persuasion so it’s actually a book people read for things like marketing. It’s just not as helpful for genuine connections and friendships and I agree, the book almost made me feel worse when I was struggling to make friends and made me even more hyper aware of if people liked me
@Akta2 жыл бұрын
Yep I agree! I don’t think it’s a bad book by any means, I just think it’s not necessarily the best book or the healthiest for people who struggle to make friends. I personally found it made me overthink more which made it even harder to genuinely make friends as I was constantly worrying about if that person liked me, if I was talking about them enough, if I was interesting enough etc. it’s a fantastic book for marketing and communication in some senses, I’ve applied some of its teachings in my role as a dentist as I speak to patients for example :)

1st book: not a fan of it tbh 2nd book: interesting title but not sure about it either. Some good points but I am not a fan of Adlerian Psychology and it's view on trauma. I very much prefer Gabor Mate, Carl Jung, modalities such as: IFS, CFT, ACT. I think Gabor Mate once said: "Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happanes inside of you as a result of the traumatic experiences". Therefore what we go through in life isn't that important. It's what happens to us as a result, that's key. The core beliefs we form, fear, self-doubt, being attracted to abusive people, addictions, etc. When it comes to authenticity as an INFJ 4w5, Quiet by Susan Cain really helped me. Also other titles such as Secret Lives of Introverts, Introvert Power and Introvert Advantage. I also discovered that I am sensitive. Therefore explored the topic too: Jenn Granhenam's Sensitive helped me to with self-acceptance. Read few other titles too. Also about to start reading Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection.
