Context is important. Book 1 = Auggie Salazar, Da Shi, Ye Wenjie, Mike Evans, Vera Ye, Tatiana. Book 2 = Saul Durand, Raj Varma Book 3 = Jin Cheng, Thomas Wade, Jack Rooney, Will Downing Episode 1-5 = Book 1 Episode 6-7 = first few chapters of Book 3 Episode 8 = first few chapters of Book 3 + first few chapters of Book 2 + final scene of Book 1

This is speculation, but I think they’re setting Auggie up to take over AA’s role as well, so she and Jin can stay companions.
@roastpork54374 ай бұрын
@@Wordhopper1990 She is going to be Sauk's love interest in Season 2, that I am 100% certain about. However, Auggie being Ai AA also makes sense but I am less confident on that because D&D and Woo are not quite there on season 3 plot line yet. If Auggie is Ai AA, then that means they are changing the ending a bit. Not in a drastically different way, but more of a happier ending than sad ending. I do like Auggie and Jin best friends energy, people say Auggie's too sentimental in season 1 but a lot can happen over the years and she is far more outspoken and headstrong than Jin Cheng, that matches Ai AA's personality.

Hi guys, I think you need to read all books to make sense of the series and understand why some characters are already there.
I thought that they split one character up for season 1 too until i read the following books, they are just characters from Book 2 and 3 but it just chronologically happens in book one hence why they put it in series one.

As someone who's read the entire trilogy, the reason it's so hard to adapt is how the books were written. Unlike many other works with a huge story arc, the characters are NOT the focus - the concepts and science are. Book 1 (TBP) is pretty much a self-contained primer for the rest of the story, and adapting as-is like the Tencent version does not make good, engaging TV for general audiences, which, let's face it - is the only demographic that matters in this age of fickle, penny-pinching studio execs. Ten years ago, HBO would have gladly footed the bill to produce the entire thing as they did with GoT. Netflix is just different - which is why the sheer amount of lowest-common-denominator garbage is so prevalent there. I think that D&D did well considering the balancing act required to make a decent show that's BASED ON a book series considering the budgeting constraints. I'm looking forward to Season 2.

Thanks for the review, it’s so fun watching you guys discuss. You guys kept on saying that there’s 400yrs before the Santi arrives but so they have time to figure it out, but I think it makes sense to start doing something asap because discoveries takes time and manufacturing also takes resources and time to do….so 400yrs to catch up to the aliens isn’t really that long, even if humanity never fucks up on anything, I feel.
@NextChapterYT4 ай бұрын
Good point!! They do need to have the urgency there for sure but I feel like they took a massive high-risk plan when a decade later could’ve had something much better figured out? But then again there’s no guarantee of that…
@mushroom4rain4 ай бұрын
@@NextChapterYT I understand your point too though, I did feel a sigh of relief after realizing it’s 400yrs away but after reading the books I realize the author had much more concepts to explore beyond just science. I look forward to a review of the trilogy after you guys finish reading it :)

To Jaden's question: Auggie + Jin take Wang Miao's role (Auggie sees the numbers and Jin plays the game). Marty should know, but Saul is replacing the lead of book 2; Raj is also a very important character in book 2-3. Will will come back. He is a perfect portrayal of another important character, appearing in book 3.Jack's character has a counterpart in the book too but was very minor, mentioned in book 3 as well. Jin and Wade both are important characters of book 3 as well.

thanks for this podcast, both of you :) saw the previous one and love this one as well; it captures everything i wish to know about. i watched netflix at first thinking that it was a new title, a very intriguing one actually, and yeah... it was a Ride! subsequently, the story picks up in the middle, and slowed down until the end, except the sophon! and... i immediately watched the tencent 30 episode series, then checkout on tonnes of KZbin videos on what happened in this trilogy, didn't even know that until later. and hence, that's how i bumped into your vid here. really glad to hear how you guys talk about the book and the show. by now, i think i've got the overall BIG picture of all the Eras in all three books! and really love the sociology part of the second, and the third was... i don't even know how to describe it anymore! Mindblown... (i haven't even read any of this printed books!) the dark domain, lines, the Superpower and dimensional distortion and the no. 1 rule about the universe and even More... and how it transcended from the Trisolarian encounters... to the far distance of human civilisation across ... just captivates the inquisitive mind i had. hahaha... yeah, i like Ye Wenjie in Tencent, probably more prominent in the book series. Kudos again for your wrap up!

I saw the Netflix version first and then read the books. However, I started by reading a part of the first book and was overwhelmed by the names and scientific details. So, then I stopped and watched the series. That really help me visualize what was happening in the books. Admittedly, that means that I first saw it through D&D's eyes. But that really did help. Seeing the differences between books and series, for me, was not an issue. Most of the time, I try to read the books first but then I constantly complain about its adaptation and that ruins the movie/video for me. I have to stop you at 37:48. The use of atomic bombs to help push a small item into "close" to light speed is not ridiculous. It has been around the scientific community for decades. The next thing you say is that they say the humans can get to the Trisolarian fleet in 300 year (the books say 200). You are also forgetting the time it takes to achieve 1% of the speed of light. Using 1000 bombs is that achieving that speed with a small packet will be even shorted than the Tresolarians can do it. It is not 1000 kg. I cannot remember how heavy it really is but basically it is just the size of a brain. In the real projections, they are projecting something in the pound range... just enough for a battery, some scientific equipment, and a radio. I thing the violence was due to D&D's experience with Game of Thrones. They wanted to duplicate the shock value of scene of the kids getting killed.
@NextChapterYT4 ай бұрын
Super interesting insight and context! Thanks!! Honestly wild that the acceleration with bombs is a current idea... never would have crossed my mind but it's super cool! I had a hard time with the 300 years for sure... I should put more thought into it but the fact that the first 3 bombs went off in a matter of minutes in the series makes it hard for me to think it would take years to explode all of them? Especially since the payload is going so fast that it will catch the bombs pretty quickly... Anyway thank you for sharing!

@Wordhopper19904 ай бұрын
Oh Marty don’t describe the scene in the cemetery to be exactly from the book! The changes in that conversations are the ones I maybe like the least :( Anyway, my opinion on the show, having read the book and having a science background, is pretty similar to yours. The stars flickering thing is very cinematic, but it would have caused world-wide panic. The ship falling apart was also amped up for tv. I don’t like why they just let the fires burn for a while, because the whole point was to be quick enough in order for no one actor/agent to be able to destroy the information. But they let half the ship burn down. The character changes, though unnecessary, grew on me. They set up the main characters for the second and third books from the beginning. It could have been Chinese characters, though. You guys seem to be having fun arguing about physics and I’m not sure I should step in haha
@NextChapterYT4 ай бұрын
Yes! Okay this was something I was going to mention but forgot to. 100% agree. The bug and the cemetery was similar and so was the fact that Ye Wenjie was there to share an idea on cosmic sociology, but I think they totally missed the mark. They definitely changed the conversation and everything to the point where I think it was just confusing for the audience. 😂😂 yep our ignorant arguments about physics haha

@@NextChapterYT I’m not going to spoil anything since you haven’t finished the Dark Forest yet, but the two reasons Luo Ji is given why he was chosen as a Wallfacer (he was the last person Ye Wenjie sought out and he’s the only person the Trisolarans specifically want dead) are things he ponders throughout the book. What she says on cosmic sociology got changed to a weird Einstein “joke” that I don’t think does the same job.

Most of the characters aren't believable in their roles, maybe with the exception of Shi. Auggie is perhaps the most unlikable protagonist I've ever seen on screen. I feel the story is handled clumsily and I don't feel the overall feel and tone of the books has been recreated. I'm very sad that this will be many people's introduction to these amazing books. Hopefully it won't discourage them from reading them.

The Tencent show should be a case study in film schools as to why books shouldn't be adapted 1:1 to the screen. The pacing was all over the place, the acting was terrible, the graphics worse, and was about twice as long as it needed to be. I did appreciate that it went deeper into the science talk, but even that was drawn out way to long.
