I think the reason for all those one star reviews that say "I don't even like bars" or "I didn't even go" is because if Google Maps senses that you've been in the proximity to a business, they ask you how your experiences were and ask for a review. So those people probably think they're writing to Google rather than posting an actual review of the place

What makes their accent so Midwest? As a European, it sounds just like regular American, in the sense that you can easily distinguish the southern accent or those from the valley (I think LA?). I'm really curious as so many people are saying it!

To me, a Californian, the most distinctive feature is the way they convert short vowels into long vowels, especially making short "a" words into long "a" words and short "o" words into long "o" words. "Bag" becomes "bayg," "wagon" becomes "waygon," "magazine becomes "maygazine," etc. The "o" sounds are more subtle, but a little bit longer, more like "oh" than "aw." And the overall accent sounds very nasal, but pleasant to my ear because of its associations with very nice people and cozy winter things. All of this (maybe niceness included?) is a legacy of the heavy Scandinavian migration to the northern Midwest.

Erica McMillan it’s funny because in the western suburbs of Illinois, my family does the reverse with their vowels (aw vs short o is a big switch out there), but I grew up around people like this, so I switch in and out of the two depending on the social context despite them being quite different.
