I really love the Master and Margarita! It's one of my absolute favorite book. However, much like you the first time I read it I had a really hard time getting into it. It probably took me a third to really get into it properly, and the entire time I read it I actually read a chapter summary every time I finished a chapter. However, it honestly was worth it in the end. I've re-read it 2 times since I read it the first time and it gets better every time I read it. And personally I find the second half of the story much more readable than the first half -- the plot becomes a lot easier to follow.

I am not sure what the issue was specifically for Emma, but I found myself being very confused by the number of characters and which ones were important to pay attention to (not all of them really are), but I also have this problem with a lot of books. I need to do a re-read of M&M as well. Maybe I would like it more.

I’ve attempted it once so far and was also using a chapter summary guide to help me through. I also found that my knowledge of Russian history was really lacking, so some of the political stuff was going over my head. This comment is encouraging though! Maybe I’ll try again.

OH, it gets more readable? I DNFed at about the half way point, but now hearing that I might try again!

I love The Master and Margarita; but it's very clearly not for everybody. The key to enjoying it, is finding out funny and if you're not laughing when the guy slips on oil and decapitates himself after the devil said he would, then you're not going to enjoy the humour; Behemoth the cat is very funny too, maybe give it to them... As regards to when does this book making sense, it started making sense to me half way through my first reread, after some googling.

Books like The Master and Margarita by Bulgakov are very important right now, in the context of what Russia is doing to Ukraine. The Master and Margarita is about the warped logic communism/nazism imposes on the human brain. Take this example "He said that in the world of Evil, when facing a powerful enemy, it’s perfectly okay to go to bed with Satan. If your inner voice objects, tell your inner voice you do it out of love. Jesus preached love, therefore Jesus would also endorse your choice." What happened to Russia after 1917 was a totally overwhelming triumph of Evil. Bulgakov succeeds in internalizing this fact and finds a way of coping with it through sarcasm and humour. If you lack the context I imagine it might not make a lot of sense but if you are interested in the topics (Eastern Europe, Russia, communism) it might be worth persevering.

I just finished the Master and Margarita and I was excited that you were reading it because I was hoping you could explain it to me 💀 I found that it picked up for me when Margarita was introduced, but I've got to say I could have entirely skipped the Pontius Pilate chapters, they were so booooring to me

I had to read The Master and Margarita at school and I just thought it was too weird for me to understand what it was about. And I do usually like weird books.

I found Mother for Dinner a surprising 5* read. Not what i would usually read but picked up after your many recommendations on book break. It explored identity and culture and family and other big concepts in a very clever way and really made me think about relationships and values and other clever things at the time. Can't wait to hear your thoughts. Back to the video!

M&M was so so strange. "Baffled and bored" was how I felt and I finished it! It was recommended by a friend who is Russian and she said she thought a lot of the humor was dependent on the translation. My response was, wait, it's supposed to be funny??
