I read Summer years ago and I don’t remember a lot of it but I remember I did like it. I should reread it along with the hundreds of other books I want to reread 😂😂. I think Edith Wharton was brilliant and so ahead of her time. ❤ Have a great weekend Susan!

Edith Wharton was brilliant indeed! We have a house full of family this weekend. Hope you enjoy yours too!!

Yes, I agree Susan. Anna Quindlen really takes you there with her characters. It can be kind of heavy if you're in an iffy mood. I've never read Summer by Wharton, but I've read House of Mirth and Ethan Frome.
@RoadReads4 ай бұрын
I’ll definitely read more Quindlen! (And more Wharton for that matter.) 😃

Hi, Susan! Yesterday I finished Steinbeck's Journal. I enjoyed it so much. For autumn I've just prepared some books. I want to begin with Nabokov. Then I am going to take Turgenev and maybe I'll take Marquez ("The autumn of the patriarch" or "Leaf storm"). I want also to re-read "The picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde and to read for the first time "Hobbit " by Tolkin.

I'm really enjoying the Journal too! So cool to get this perspective from him! You've got some serious reading set for fall. That's awesome!!!

I’ve read a lot of Edith Wharton but am not familiar with Summer. But ironically, I recently read The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. A short book - a sweet story of a young girl and her grandmother. You might find it a good “palate cleanser.” 😊

You're right -- a sweet story can be a great palate cleanser. I'll look into it.

Ethan Fromme is probably my favorite read. Summer I also found very interesting. And another favorite was Theodore Dreisers Jenny Gerhardt. I think you will like it. Thank you for your channel!
@RoadReads4 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching!! I'll look into Jenny Gerhardt! :) Ethan Frome is perfection. As for Summer, I did quite like the ending. I had a feeling it was going to go that way.

I've only read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton and loved it. One day I'll get to "The Age Of Innocence". Our big chain book store had a deal of classics 3 books for $12.00 so I got "Cranford" by Elizabeth Gaskell, for Victober, and this winter I want to go down a rabbit hole of my own with Herman Melville. There's a new book called "The Manifesto Of Herman Melville" that comes out in Dec.

Thanks, Susan. 🙂 (I have not yet read “Summer”, only “The Age of Innocence”, which I did like.) I don’t really have a reading plan for September, just will be reading (and listening to) whatever strikes my fancy, at the time. You know, the books from my shelves, yet to be read, and new books yet to be received.📚 I have recently read and appreciated: “The God of the Woods” by Liz Moore, “All the Colors of the Dark” by Chris Whitaker, “Everyone Who is Gone is Here” by Jonathan Blitzer, (which broke my heart), “The Underworld” by Susan Casey, (which was fascinating), “Secrets of the Octopus” by Sy Montgomery, (amazing). “The Wide, Wide Sea” by Hampton Sides, (excellent). I have Richard Osman’s new book on order (“We Solve Murders”), also, “The Grey Wolf” by Louise Penny, as well as, “Playground” by Richard Powers. As always, I’m also listening to lots of various faves, as I work each day to keep my garden thriving. 🌺🌼🌸

Hi Susan. I enjoyed your video. I'm pretty sure my mother read Black and Blue when it came out and told me a little bit about it. It did sound interesting. It doesn't sound like it's a true story but I wondered about that. I'm trying to finish up a few books right now - nothing much to mention but in September I have a book about Leonardo Davinci and The Forsyte Saga lined up to read. I heard that Ken Burns is doing a program about Leonardo Davinci so I'm planning to watch that when it comes out too.
@RoadReads4 ай бұрын
I didn't know Ken Burns was doing a da Vinci documentary. I'm on board for that! (I have the have the Walter Isaacson book on da Vinci but haven't read it yet.)

@@RoadReads The book I have is by Fritjof Capra and called Learning from Leonardo. I loved Capra's The Tao of Physics.

My French edition of Ethan Frome also has Summer in the same book but I haven’t got to it yet! Fall starts Sept 15 for me! 😂 it was so hot today, my head is not ready to switch… yet! 😅

I’ve only read Age of Innocence and loved it…it’s a tossup…East of Eden or Grapes of Wrath…absolutely loved both… maybe reading the Four Winds by Kristen Hannah was a letdown after reading the Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck?

That's great that you LOVED them both!! I'm going to give Grapes another try. But, man, did I loathe it when I last read it in my mid-30s.

I read Summer at the end of August too. I liked it okay. I thought the ending was good because of how the relationship changed for the better imo. I don't think they had a real "father/daughter" relationship while growing up.... just the feeling i had with context clues. I think she was "adopted" (and the story clarified it wasn't a legal adoption but more of a foster type situation) more for the mom's sake than him being a father and treating her as his child. So the ending and how their relationship changed because of her circumstances, hit me positively because of the public sentiment of those circumstances at that point in time. I still can't tell you how i feel abt Ethan Frome. 😅 i didn't love it but didn't hate it either even tho i probably should. 😅

I remember reading Black and Blue back when it was first published and really enjoying it but I can see that it would be quite dated for today’s reader. A shame about Summer, the premise sounds good.
