Russian Lit when you don't usually read classics!?!? Sooo brave. I read classics often and I have not been able to bring myself to touch Russian Lit just yet, Little Women is my all time favorite book. I feel like that is such an easy classic to read. I also didn't like Pride and Prejudice, but Emma is better if you want to try more Austen. It's also helpful for me to listen to the audio books while following along in the book when I read classics.

Also, Levin is also my favourite character from "Anna Karenina". I don't think Anna was intended to be likeable, and I also disliked her a lot. The book was probably named after her because her actions affected characters around her and put some events into motion; pretty often in russian literature you will have the main character follow the journey of "downfall", very unlike western literature (especially american) where the hero is likeable, starts the journey poor and achieves all the dreams in the end. In russian literature, the book is the exploration of human nature and society of the time, and more often you start with rich characters that lose it all by the end (or literally have any kind of "downfall"). And here, it was Anna.

13:00 That's due to the differences between how speech is shown in Russian and in English books. We DON'T use " " for direct speech; we use this: - This is interesting so far, - said Jaime. We'll use "" for names of things (like the book, "Anna Karenina"), for thoughts ("Cool", - she thought.) I feel like if this becomes confusing for a foreign reader, the translator should've come up with a solution. When I translate books from English, I use OUR system of writing dialogue. Seems like this translation did the same, but didn't account for the fact that " " parts would become confusing!

It took me 2 years to finish Anna Karenina. It was really hard for me to read, because of the slow storytelling. I am glad I did finish it, but I would not read it again. The parts about the countryside (the work and the money) did not really interest me. The character development was good though...
