Sandy Aubertine I just got my progressives about 3 wks ago. Holy ?$#%. I've been back to the eye dr. 4 times. They hate to see me walk in. I can't seem to adjust. I know it's only been 3 weeks but it shouldn't be this hard to wear glasses. I understand what she is saying but it's still so hard for me. I just pray it gets better. Hi Julie, I am the optician at Friendswood Vision here, sorry for responding a little late to your comment. Progressive lenses can be very tough to get use to and we have had patient taking as long as couple of months. The patients that we noticed have the most trouble with progressive lenses are those whose typically spent 8-10 hours a day infront of 3 computer screens that required them to shift their eyes a lot and in those cases, we typically recommend they get specific pair of computer progressive lenses or computer single vision lenses. While progressive lenses does allow for all ranges of vision, it was never meant to be a dedicated computer glasses. Also with patient who had a hard time adapting to progressive lenses for general use, I would say start with a simple task of looking at your phone, it is a fairly easy task compare to everything else and it'll get you use the nature of progressive lenses. Also, most people (me included) would give up anything to look at their phones so it's an incentive. If you still can't get use to your progressive lenses, definitely asked the optical if they can remake the lenses for you into something else, most lenses have warranty against adaptability issues. Hoan Trinh Hi, I have the the same problem you mentioned. Do you recommend the patient to have 2 spectacles: 1 for computer and 1 progressive for distance and near? I actually can read newspapers etc without glasses. Also, another complicating decision is the choice of “corridor”, 5 different prices, my optician insists one should take the wider, more expensive option, plus take more expensive lenses (scratch resistant, blah blah)for more comfort, so ends up paying 400-500 $? Eager to receive your professional advice.

Great video. Thanks. I just got my first pair of progressives and I’m over 70. Trying hard to get used to them and it is nice not to have to keep switching glasses all day. I heard that the adaption period can be 2 weeks or more, so I’m sticking it out. Thanks again for the nice video.

I am the optician and videographer at FW Vision and yes, adaptation period is usually about two weeks and sometime even longer so it is perfectly okay if it's a bit of a struggle at first. Thank you for the comment and glad that you like our video :)

I'm over 70 also, and have tried all 3 options. The best compromise for me were simple bifocals with two diopters, but you can't find them online anymore. Now everyone sells no-line multifocal readers which force your head to constantly search for the optimal position . I became a human bobblehead to the point where it made me woozy.

Thank you so much!! I've been struggling with that ackward distance between my eyes and a computer screen. Maddening! I'm near sighted so of course I can see it clearly if my eyes are 5 inches from the screen! Your explanation makes it evident I need progressives. I wondered however, why my eye exam doesn't reveal this difficulty. I guess I have to tell my opthomaligist I'm having difficulty seeing things clearly at about 15 inches. I do not mind looking, " over the top", of plus lenses, or removing them. I normally check my Snellen, at home, at 20/20. I can read my Cell Phone at 15 inches, with no plus lens. I am 81 years old. Thanks for your excellent review!

I already have reading glasses but as I get older seem to need more reading glasses at nights to see things up close (in bright sunny days seem to not have this issue as I can see my phone pretty close).

Very informative vid! I just have a question though. I am 15 and I have 20/20 vision but I hate reading small text. I also read music and sometimes the notes are too close to each other and the numbers are too small. I went to the optometrist yesterday and she told me I just need .5 to relax my eyes when I'm reading. I'm thinking of just getting the progressives but she said I should only wear them when needed. I was thinking of making the distance vision non prescripted. Will that affect my eye site or no? Thanks!

I like bifocals better than progressive lenses because I don't like to have my perpherial vision distorted! If I want to look to the side I don't have to move my head Everytime! But the bifocals have the line to separate the far and near vision which I don't like! But I think it's a fair trade off! They both have a flaw! Bifocals with the line and progressives with the distortion on the sides of the lenses! It's really up to you and what you want to trade off!!

I needed glasses from the age of seven being myopic (shortsighted). When I progressed to Progressive lenses, I never looked back from day one, actually I was never conscious of that progression, it just happened. The advantages of not having to change glasses is great. Appearing as though your vision isn't as badly off is another. Children are extremely cruel to children who wear glasses. A part from having to get use to progressive lenses, which if you put them on in the morning and leave them, then they will soon become normal. If you collect your new glasses in the afternoon, then a part from checkingbthem out, I woukd suggest you wait until thecweekend at home, to get use to tgem. Put them on first up in the morning and forget about your old glasses. Get use to them, prior to driving. Funny but few people actually will admit that they have issues adjusting to bi-focals. The really big down side is the cost of progressive lenses as opposed to single vision glasses, is considerable. I think a lot depends on finances, age of the wear, strength of the lens as that affects the thickness of the outside of the lenses, fashion consciousness etc. At 66, I honestly wouldn't move away from Progressive lenses, ever. Don't forget you have a guara period that covers your glasses, if you have issues. On the rare occasion you can get a screw up, in the making of your lenses or the precise marking of the central pupil position. So never forget, you may end up with a pair of glasses that have simply been made wrong. I am currently going through that for the first time in 59 years. The prescription was way wrong and my pupil position was marked incorrectly. I pick up my new glasses tomorrow, for the second time.

i just turned 40 and have started to get poor vision on reading small words. i went to the lens clinic and checked to find cylindrical on right eye with -.75 and +1 on both eyes so i went for single reading glasses and also for progressive glasses.Now as i am wearing both the glasses i find it interesting that with the reading glasses i am able to see far as well, better than progressive lenses.

Do you mean that with your single vision reading glasses, you can see far away (e.g. to watch TV) better than you can see in the top portion of your Progressives? If that is the case, it doesn't make sense and you might want to return to your optometrist to be rechecked...

But i am finding it clear for reading small words as well even for long not only the distance of TV but also to watch about 500 mtrs or more.I even contacted the optometrist about it.He said not to use the reading glasses for long vision as it might cause headaches or number will also increase.OR i have a doubt as i was having farsightedness since when i was 12 and i had done lasik surgery past 6 yrs when my number was -4 on both eyes.So might be it has caused this unique sight of mine.

I need some help! I have a 1.25 power with a slight astigmatism in one eye only. I work on a computer all day. I have no distance issues. I'm 44. I had regular single distance up until this last visit and they recommended progressives, with a 1.25 add. I don't feel like they help at all. I feel like it's actually harder to use them. Can't I just have my doctor up my script to 1.25 period? Can I ask this of my doctor and be good?

I had the similar issue, in my case i had cataracts, which have now been replaced with IOL's. Even though i have IOL's now I'll still be getting progressives so i don't need to put reading glasses on/off constantly, Get your eyes checked for cataracts it could be causing your blurred vision, get a diabetes test as well... good luck...Your comment is 2 years old i wonder how you got on?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but can we tell the vision person to make the reading part bigger than the computer and far distance? I want to use my progressive glasses at the firing range. At this point, I need to point my chin upward to be able to see the pistol's sight.

There are definitely different progressive lens designs out there that allow for a bigger reading area than other, the optician can adjust the seg height so you wouldn't have to point your chin up as much, but that would effect your distance and computer vision. Ultimately there is no perfect lens for all situation so if you go to the firing range a lot, definitely consider a dedicate pair of glasses just for that and talk your to your optician with regard to your shooting mechanic and your concerns and they can definitely make the best lens recommendation as well as getting proper measurement that would be ideal for the firing range (that might or might not ideal for office or driving). Isn't there a digital solution for eye vision? I mean we have a VR headset where you adjust the sight and then everything looks sharp because you adjusted it. So if a camera is filming everything instead and you then look at the video stream you should see everything clearly. I have been looking for such a solution but I guess the technology isn't there yet.

I'm in my late 40's and just got my new semi-rimless glasses today which has lined-bifocal lenses and has transition as well. First time using lined-bifocal lenses and only owned them for like 8 hours now. To be honest going from single vision lenses to lined-bifocal lenses was not hard for me to accustomed to it. When I look at my self in the mirror wearing my new glasses it's really hard to see the lined-bifocal part of the lenses. Maybe my eye prescription has something to do with that cause my add is +1.50 both eyes.

I'm 40+. Already wearing my 2nd progressive. My advice, get the lens with less than 35mm in height. You will get used to it in very short time. Anything higher will freak your wallet out. Its not a cheap lens.

I had bifocals for years, but when I needed an intermediate Rx, rather than tri-focals, I went to progressives. HOWEVER, all was not perfect. As you said, I found myself having to move my head left/right/up/down, to find the EXACT spot on the lens that would focus what I was looking at, say the clock. That became a Pain in the Neck. After a few years, I gave up and went to lined tri-focals. MUCH BETTER. But I lost the continuous intermediate Rx that a progressive provides. sigh.

You can measure your PD online or download the rules PD measurement. If you like you can also visit your eye doctor to measure your Pupilary Distance.

I just got single vision for near vision and one lens is better than the other, I turned the glasses upside down and one lense is definitely better than the other so it’s not bad vision in one eye , did something go wrong

Bad part is you have to look straight ahead to see with no line bifocals. The sides of the lens will always be out of focus with the no line compared to lined bifocals

This video is over 2 years old. You may have made another one by now. This is my 1st video of yours. I think the video was near perfect. The only thing I wish you would have said or added is not to expect perfection out of you PAL. There are parts of the lenses that are not used. Those parts will always appear blurry. Taking away the lines adds to the beautiful seamless appearance, but from a vision stand point, they take away some people's much needed peripheral vision. No one is ever told that there is a large portion for distance, a narrow strip down the middle for computer, and a smaller portion for near. People naturally think that the entire viewing areas are used. Almost like a coke cola bottle shape or hour glass shape. This is one reason why people keep going back and forth to the doctor. They have zero clues about this. If people knew this from the start, they would have an easier time adjusting. They would know and understand it is not their fault.

if you have just reading glass with lowest +1~ +1.25 diopters , you will be able to read and see the computer screen fine . you can add blue light coated as well; only for driving you need to see the distance correctly otherwise , distant light comes parallel and does not affect that much because reading glass cannot modify the parallel light rays ! why am i explaining this because progressive lens could give you more headaches because of eyes strain ! so just use reading glass with one single lens is good enough ! those who are MYOPIC (short sighted ) and have ASTIGMATISM , they need to see an optometrist to get prescription lens for correcting myopia and astigmatism.

I am the optician here at Friendswood Vision, sorry we didn't see your question earlier. We definitely have seen younger patient who need to be progressive or bifocal because they have accomodative insufficiency where they have a harder time focusing up close. However, only your optometrist can determine if you would need progressive lenses or not given your symptoms and prescription. Due to the compromising natures of progressive lense that we outline in the video (ie mainly narrow field of view and cost), we don't prescribe them to our patient unless they truly need it (unfortunately when you are older, you are going to need it :)). Also, for our younger patient with accomodative insufficiency, we typically like to prescribe the EyeZen lenses from Essilor which are single vision lenses that have just a tiny bit of add power to help you with upclose vision. Eyezen are definite not as strong as a progressive, but it doesn't come with the drawback of progressive lenses either. Ultimately, I would bring up the symptoms that you have up to your optometrist and let them decide which would be the best option.

I am the optician at Friendswood Vision here, and yes, progressives lenses will probably be your best bet as it is the only options that give you all ranges vision. There are many different type of progressive lenses but at our office for your specific use, we would recommend the Varilux X lenses. The Varilux X give the best intermediate and distant vision with less peripheral distortion than other progressive lenses. Definitely speak to your optician with regard to the various options and your specific needs.

There is such a thing as lineless bifocals which do not have the large blurry area to either side of the lens. These should not be confused with progressive lenses which are multifocal. An optometrist should know this.

Yeah, but how do you go down the the steps without looking and feeling like a freak? I got my progressives today and it felt so weird especially on steps.

Yes, Progressives can definitely be difficult to adapt to, especially when you're walking down the stairs. Just remember to look through the top part of your lenses when going down the steps. The top part of your glasses has the distance prescription to help you see the stairs/steps far away. If you look through the bottom part of your lenses, that is the near prescription and it will cause dizziness when walking down the stairs.

I just did the same thing. I got sunglasses and regular clear lenses with the progressive lenses. I do not like them, small field of vision for reading and need to move head to much. I am taking them back to change to simple bifocal lenses.

I tried progressives for the 1st time this year and it’s my last. Limited close up Vision and it’s not easy to use. I ended up just taking my glasses off to read. Going back to bi focals next.

My experience with progressive lens is that you will not be able to play sports to well! Any sports that require speed and movements like games that use balls etc. will make you feel and be as if clumsy! :)

i have a aquestion, about bifocals, so the only part that is magnified is the bottom half? the top half is just clear glass?

Lasik is the best option. You get same treatment throw out your glasses lol. I had my lasik in 2011 and its going great. Had few followups in 2011 and 2012 to make sure my eyes are in good shape. After that, I have not seen any optician yet. Last thing my eyes were -6.75 before lasik. Lasik rocks....i m happy now . Free of glasses. But be careful where u do ur lasik matters....

Have you hit your 40's yet? I had LASIK in 2002 and to this day my distance vision is perfect. But they warned me I might still need reading glasses when I hit my 40s. I love that I had LASIK and had 17 awesome years of not wearing glasses, but now I need reading glasses.

I hate the Progressive so far. I have a month to return them. Super annoying. I wish it was bifocal at the very bottom. I dont know why they have to have it all the way up, almost 3/4th of the lense. 😢

My first day with progressive lenses, or any prescription glasses. TOTALY HATE THEM...hope that changes with time. Feel like I'm on acid. Everything is swirling. The distortion is over whelming.

I find progressive lens worse than reading glasses. I cannot see KZbin comments on top portion of the progressive lens, middle portion looks blurry . Only with lower portion of the progressive lens I can see the words/ sentences clearly. So I have to adjust my head up and down in order to read the comments and this is very much irritating and frustrating. This does not happen with powered reading glasses. I do not have to move my head or eyes in order to see things clearly. My laptop is 50 cm away from my vision.

I just had cataract surgery and had new lenses inserted in my eyes - that fixed my far-sighted problem but worsened my near-sighted issues. Researching all this tells me that the options for IOL lenses are just as bad as glasses...you can actually get multi-focal lenses inserted into your eyes but these create light halos, rainbow effects, etc, etc...so the technology still just isn't quite there yet. In the meantime, I just keep buying more and more reading glasses, bi-focal sunglasses, progressive reading glasses, computer glasses...sigh...

I just returned my progressives. Hated them. Went back to my line bifocals. Couldn't not stand having to move my head constantly.
