Very nice summary (I'm here because I'm eagerly awaiting book 3)... Ada Palmer's comment about the transport system that means that no place on Earth is far from any other - distances like between a city and its suburbs as AP puts it in her interview - is relevant: the hive structure is possible because georgraphy and physical distance no longer need define identity and sense of community and belonging.

I'm reading this book at the moment, and I wasn't sure if I should carry on and invest energy into it or not as I know very little about philosophy or the enlightenment. But you convinced me I should try. Also. You seem like the kind of smart girls I like to get to know. Let's be friends. :D

Literally just bought a copy of this book on Saturday when I was in London. I was really excited to see it there as no Irish shop seems to stock it as it only has an American publisher. Philosophy is something I shy away from generally so I'm curious to see how I will deal with that aspect of the book.
