Back in 2019, I delved into The Silent Patient, sparking my interest in thrillers. However, with numerous mixed reviews surrounding The Maidens, I hesitated to pick it up, fearing it might tarnish my perception of the author. I read In My Dreams I Hold a Knife during a reading slump. Despite some characters being somewhat predictable, it served as a compelling page-turner, ultimately reigniting my passion for reading. Overall, it proved to be an enjoyable escape for me.

Girl I appreciate your honesty & I get what you mean trying to escape from the real world into fiction books. I think you could’ve worded that differently at the end but I understand what you mean 100% , when you think you are reading a genre & it ends up being something completely different. I love how real you are with your ratings though and how you feel about books. Also I wanted to tell you that you new reading room is so cozy & im loving the second bookshelf it looks nice! ❤

I really appreciate how nice and gentle you were about this comment. I also appreciate your honesty & because I am really bad at wording things, how could I have described it better in a way that wouldn’t offend anyone so I can learn for next time?

@@faithsreadingthings honestly with topics like that you have to walk on eggshells & trudge lightly around what you say because it’s so so hard to not offend people by stating your opinion & while you literally review books on your channel and give your HONEST review some people are going to take it wrong, but it was definitely obvious you just didn’t want to make anyone upset & wanted to be honest at the same time don’t let criticism get to you. :) you’re 100% entitled to your opinion

i’m so sorry about these comments. you are allowed to share opinions on a book you’ve read, even if people disagree. Even if you worded something wrong, which i don’t think you did, people watching should realize you are stating an opinion and it is coming from a place of love for reading. If booktubers don’t give their opinions, how are the viewers supposed to know what books they would be interested in?

@@faithsreadingthingsI think what is making people feel like what you’re saying is tone deaf is because racism is intense and uncomfortable and prominent in POC’s lives. So while you are expressing your opinion it feels dismissive to those who live these experiences in our daily life. However you absolutely have a right to read what you want.

While I understand that real world issues such as race isn’t what you were looking for, I don’t see why that would impede your enjoyment of the book. These are issues that we can’t escape from and I liked that this was a prevalent point in the book.

I feel like she really didn’t mean it like that I think she just didn’t like the overall plot of the book and how the whole book was surrounding racism when it is in the dark academia genre. She said multiple positive things about the book, even stating she was rooting for the characters and would read the authors memoir I think she was just expecting a different storyline / plot for this book & wasn’t expecting to read about racism.

To be so honest with you, I personally would never reach for a book with the main factors being racism/sexuality or any real world problems for that matter. It’s not out of touch to want to read stories to escape what we hear about and are constantly learning about in our day to day lives. Not wanting to read a book revolved around those topics does not AT ALL mean you don’t want to be educated, it just means you’d prefer to be educated through other forms of media.

I 1000% understand why it would not be enjoyable, it’s the same reason I don’t find real world based war novels enjoyable. I hear about it, see it, and live it through my phone screen constantly. I don’t need to experience through my books as well

That’s what I’m sayin! But in my dark academia video I just got some messages and comments where people totally misunderstood what I was saying so I just wanted to make it very clear this time😂😂

i mostly understand what you were trying to say and that you didn’t understand that’s what this book would be about or know how to word your thoughts but saying the main plot was racism and then in the next clip saying you “didn’t care for the plot” just rubbed me the wrong way, i’m sorry. i also saw your instagram story and of course not liking it because of pacing, storyline, etc is totally valid but saying that you don’t care to be educated on topics such as racism and sexuality just comes off as out of touch. i’m not trying to hate or attack you, and i really hesitated posting this comment because i know you even contemplating deleting the video. but i just feel like you’re missing the point as to why some viewers are upset with your wording. no one (at least from what i have seen) is accusing you of being racist and not liking the book because it has a black author,(you even said you’d like to read a memoir by her). we are just pointing out so you and others are made aware in the future to be sensitive and aware of the way they word things when it comes to stories like this and maybe think it through before posting it online and spreading this message. i really really hope you don’t take this as hate, i am genuinely just trying to help the situation and explain where commenters are coming from. you are such an amazing book tuber and i love your content 🫶

But that’s the thing I’m even confused about, I never once said I don’t care to be educated on those topics. In fact I feel like I made that clear by saying that I am already very aware of those things and don’t mind when it’s casually in the book. I just didn’t like the intensity of it in this book and think it would have been better done as creative non fiction or a memoir. But yes I totally get what you’re saying and where I could have done things differently and I seriously appreciate you being on here and showing perspective. It helps me better understand others point of view and how to avoid misinterpretation.

@@faithsreadingthings Yeah you’re 100% right on that so i think it’s just been a miscommunication between you and some of us viewers. like i said, the main thing that bothered me was how you said you didn’t care for the plot (which you formerly said the plot was discussions of racism) so it seemed like you were saying you didn’t care to learn abt racism. but i now see that you might’ve meant it in terms of it being written in the format of a dark academia mystery novel rather than a non fiction or memoir style. i believer i’m interpreting this right, correct me if i’m wrong but if not, i’m really glad this conversation has hopefully helped to clear things up and we’ve all learned something

well that was extremely disappointing. Black authors already get little to no recognition and the one book you read by a black author gets criticized for talking about relevant issues. How disappointing.
@faithsreadingthings

The one book I read in this specific video. I’ve read and loved many books by black authors that I’ve talked about in my videos but this one specifically I did not enjoy as much. I still had plenty of positive things to say about it. I’m allowed to not enjoy a book. Just because I share my thoughts online doesn’t mean I deserve to get harsh comments and criticism when people misunderstand my reviews… I totally agree that authors of color don’t get enough recognition which is why I still make sure I read a handful of books by them. That doesn’t mean I won’t share my honest review about the books the same as I would any other author? Would you rather me lie and say I loved the book just because of who the author is? I don’t feel like that’s fair… I just simply did not enjoy the overall pacing & plot of this story alongside the intensity of real world issues present… I admire this author and like I said would love to read more about her own personal story I just didn’t super enjoy this specific book..

@@faithsreadingthings I’m the only one that got this type of response because me saying “as a creator I really enjoy, that part of the video was very disappointing” was mean? as one of the only very obvious black people that commented on it. but I wasn’t trying to be “mean” or “aggressive” as we are so often labeled. I will continue to watch your videos and hope you word things differently next time.
@faithsreadingthings
@faithsreadingthings Жыл бұрын
Your initial comment came off as a little rude because of the way you said it, yes.. Which if you listened to what I was saying that is not the only reason I didn’t like this book. I’m sure you weren’t trying to be aggressive as I was not trying disappoint or offend anyone with my review. The color of your skin has absolutely nothing to do with the nature of my response so I don’t see how you saying “as one of the only very obvious black people that commented” is necessary.. I think you & your heritage are beautiful so please do not think that that has anything to do with my response. I learned from this video that, like I mentioned in the video, I’m bad at wording things and need to learn to do that better. But I hope you can also take something from this interaction and be a little more understanding and cautious with the way you also word your comments towards creators and that people are allowed to feel a certain way without it being a bad thing.. I appreciate you continuing to watch my videos and hope that everything I say comes across as from a place of love!🫶🏼
