In the first episode of My Drunk Feminism, I read the controversial "feminist" text "The SCUM Manifesto" by Valerie Solanas. It was a wild ride.

Bless you for this video--it's a challenge to read something hateful, but always consider how bad it was back then for women (which I know you've certainly studied and/or talked to older folks who remember that time). Being a lesbian was illegal & unpopular enough that people were murdered for it all the time. Abortion was illegal almost everywhere in the world, certainly in the U.S. Part of the rage expressed by Dr. Solanas ended up pushing through much of the now-quickly-fading gains of women in the last fifty years. She herself was the first woman to complete a PhD program in Chemistry at the University she eventually studied at, where her dissertation centered around the XY vs. XX reality of many organisms. You are SO RIGHT about Dr. Solanas' willful "flipping" the narrative of Simone de Beauvoir's SECOND SEX! I have NEVER HEARD anyone MAKE that connection--but looking at it--YEA! that MUST'VE been on her mind... If you ever feel inclined, the SCUM Manifesto is a hard but empowering read, if you're feeling the weight of the patriarchy on you that day more than normal. Dr. Solanas never compromised, although she was known to have called it "all a joke" in an interview in the late 70s, after taking so much shit for it for so many years. She died of pneumonia on the streets in 1989 i believe, homeless, hungry, hated. But defiant. Sometimes it's the hardest most uncompromising visionaries that make more mellow people fighting for their rights feel stronger--because deep down, Dr. Solanas wanted ALL WOMEN to succeed--and could care less if any man thought he could get in the way! The reason he shot Andy Warhol, the famous male artist, is explored in a cool movie from 1996 called, simply, "I Shot Andy Warhol" starring Lili Taylor. It does a good job on a lot of the story, contextualizes why she did what she did, what kind of scene it was around Andy Warhol, etc. (By the way, people actually FOUND the PLAY Andy supposedly stole from her decades later, in a box that had been left behind when Andy Warhol died in 1987. So her play was real, even though in the film it was unclear. The play was put on in 1999 or 2000, i believe. I'd say, if & when you want to, give the SCUM Manifesto another chance--if only to see how hard a person can be made to feel when society is that much against them. I have a feeling Valerie's work will become more popular (unfortunately) in the coming times, due to how horrific the country & the world is becoming toward women--almost like the last 50 years of progress never happened. Bless You Friend! It's brave even to TRY reading this--braver STILL to dare to share it ✊

A scam a a fake artist a guy who will probably support crypto art and other schemes if he was still alive 1. The Factory and the "Superstars": Warhol's Factory was a hub for artists, performers, and various creative figures, many of whom were marginalized individuals, including women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people from minority backgrounds. Warhol often referred to the women who frequented the Factory as his "superstars," turning them into the faces of his films and artwork. However, he is criticized for exploiting these women for his artistic gain while offering them little in return. For instance, Edie Sedgwick, one of Warhol's most famous muses, became the subject of several of his films. While she gained some fame through her association with Warhol, her life spiraled into drug addiction and eventual early death, with some critics arguing that Warhol failed to offer genuine support or protection despite profiting from her image and persona. 2. Treatment of Women in Films: Warhol's films often featured women in provocative, controversial roles, and there have been accusations that he manipulated or coerced them into participating in degrading or explicit scenes. For example, in the film "Chelsea Girls", Warhol showcased women in ways that some critics have argued were objectifying and exploitative. The women involved often had little say in how they were portrayed or how their images were used. 3. Sexual Exploitation and Power Dynamics: Warhol's relationship with many of his female muses and collaborators has been criticized for involving significant power imbalances. As a powerful figure in the art world, Warhol had the ability to elevate or diminish the careers of those around him. This dynamic led to situations where women, particularly those who were young, vulnerable, or seeking fame, may have felt pressured to comply with his demands, whether in artistic collaborations or personal relationships. 4. Appropriation of Minority Cultures: Warhol's work also faced criticism for its treatment of minorities. For example, his series "Ladies and Gentlemen" (1975), which depicted African American and Latino drag queens and transgender women, has been seen as both a celebration and an exploitation. While Warhol brought visibility to marginalized individuals, he also commercialized their images without deeply engaging with their lived experiences or the broader struggles of their communities. 5. Lack of Support for Vulnerable Individuals: Many of the individuals Warhol surrounded himself with at the Factory, including women, were dealing with personal issues such as drug addiction, mental health problems, and homelessness. Warhol's detachment and refusal to intervene in their personal lives has been criticized as exploitative, as he profited from the chaos and drama that surrounded these figures while often offering little genuine support or care.

Thing is, there were feminists at the time who both denounced her and supported her, including NOW which was kind of divided publicly about her. Even years after her death academics stated everything from her being responsible for the "first wave of radical feminism" to calling her "an avant-garde performer." My take? She was schizophrenic in a time when schizophrenia was both poorly understood and had very limited treatment options. Antipsychotics had literally just been invented 10 years prior.

As a feminist and a gender studies major, I am constantly examining and analyzing feminism both in and outside the classroom for weak spots, misguided ideas, and areas of improvement (which is something I think Marina was getting at in this video/in other videos as well). I expect it's possible that my professors are consciously deciding which texts are best included in a syllabus, but I think the omission of this manifesto probably has more to do with that there are SO many other feminist texts that were/are far FAR more important than this one. (Also, it's possible that I learned about it but never read it/just don't remember it - my classes and activist circles take considerable care to cover the parts of feminist histories that are less than agreeable because we recognize that it's important to understand problematic pasts if we want to fix them in the future). Marina pointed out in this video that the scum manifesto doesn't draw from other feminist theory or praxis - it's just making stuff up, which isn't doesn't fit well into a classroom setting. Generally I think academic fields try not to take seriously the people who not only advocate for the murder of an entire gender in theory but also in practice, regardless of how people outside the field understand the role (or lack thereof) of a text within that field. And thank you! I am aware that a liberal arts education is consistently undervalued in this society. I have many structured plans for the future of my education and my career.

i think people bring up the scum manifesto as its clearly a feminist text parody or not, and not an egalitarian text... its normally you used to counter the point of feminism being about equality.. and thus is the same thing as egalitarianism. the point that gets made when this is brought up is the femenism is not about equality.

It's not actually random 'ramblings', it's a little more complicated than that. People don't take this text seriously or literally, I mean FFS the title stands for 'Society For Cutting Up Men'. It is satire. This text is basically a comical subversion of many of Sigmund Freud's theories, for example 'penis envy' and his essays on gender. It is often read as a line by line satire of psychoanalysis / Freud's work. Please research this and it will make much more sense :)

I LOVE the manifesto but not because I support violence of any sort. I think it’s so ranty and ridiculous that it fully encapsulates female rage more than anything else I’ve read. She wasn’t a paranoid schizophrenic imo, more so an antisocial vigilante with a history of abuse at the hands of men. Unfortunately feminist text is supposed to be literal, logical, ethical, and practical in order for us to derive meaning from it.

Indeed, you don't read the SCUM Manifesto as a serious essay in the ways you normally read non-fiction. I have two lenses through which I approached the text: reversal of the patriarcal discourse (what if... we took the patriarchal discourses and reverse it on them), you can actually see a lot of similarities and equivalence and in the '60-'70 (context is important), reading that could actually help disprove some stuff just as ridiculous. The other, is a dystopia essay (in the sixties, asexual reproduction was thought to be so near and we wouldn't need another partner to do this. Parthenogenesis was really popular a theory for women reproduction without any other partner of any gender). Some good idea to have a society reform, other less so. About the trans issues you mention, being a text in the sixties, Valerie Solanas actually wrote about transvestites (the word she uses and who was used back then) and they were amongst the very few "men" (i know, it's problematic how I phrase it, but again, I'm quoting her) who could actually survive the slaughter of men because of their understanding and supports of the women (the FtM people wouldn't survive though...). That point was not to invalidate what you mention but to actually say that Valerie Solanas did considered transvestites to be the gender they thought they were, not the one they were assigned to. Sorry for any confusion, I'm not a native english speaker. I'd love to talk more about this (and yes, this is not really a feminist text), but I absolutely think it is an essential to read. A lot of the '70 feminism was created in reaction to this text (maybe especially the french authors I've worked on but they include Simone de Beauvoir, Monique Wittig, Françoise d'Eaubonne and Xavière Gauthier). Françoise d'Eaubonne actually wrote a brilliant SF novel on the premises of the SCUM Manifesto (women kill all the men because patriarchy) called Les Bergères de l'Apocalypse that explore a bit more the world of Solanas (and I have to say, just to be sure, Françoise did NOT approved of killing men in any way and actually was a very vocal person for the support and help of men in feminism). Les Bergères have never been translated in english. Some part of my master (on Les Bergères...) explores the links between SF, the SCUM Manifesto and Les Bergères if you can read french: papyrus.bib.umontreal.ca/xmlui/handle/1866/16121

We discussed it as an interesting and controversial piece of feminist history. We had basically the same conversation you're having here, except sober (unfortunately). Also, we spent one class session on it. It wasn't something central to the class that we discussed at length for weeks or anything. We spent a day talking about it and then moved on. Mention Valerie Solanas to feminists and my guess is most won't have any idea who you're even talking about, let alone endorse her ideas.

That's like asking a Jew to read Mein Kampf during history class, then asking them to find the merits of Hitlers arguments; I can't imagine your class consisted entirely of women.

She shot Warhol because she had given him a script of a feminist play, he complemented it and basically lead her to believe he would use it. He never used it, and also never returned the only copy. He told her he had tossed it, and offered to let her work on his play “I, a man” as compensation. In actuality, he had it the whole time. It was later produced

Hi, you said, that this text wasn't part of any of your classes. But dont you think that there would have maybe been some value in critically analyzing this text in a class setting? You know, just to take a look at the fringes and try to understand how and why they came to their conclusions ?
@marinashutup

That's fair! We read a lot of theorists in my classes our professors knew most of/some of the class would disagree with. We put their work in conversation with other theorists and it was super productive! However, they probably didn't see much educational value in this? Unless you read it as satire maybe.
@stoned887
@stoned887 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I can see that the educational value might have been seriously diminished by the fact that the manifesto doesnt really have a large group of supporters and that its creation was probably more influenced by Valeris Solanas very tragic personal history rather then a look at society as a whole.

Solanas was a genius. Her manifesto is highly compatible with the theory of second sex by de Beauvoir. Yes her language is hard but that doesn't make her statements less true. As you point out, the part about biological inferiority is a parallel to all the men in history who have viewed females as a less complete males. She just switches the roles. In the rest of the manifesto her conclusions about men and women has much more to do with the social construct of gender than biology. Also, she never ever makes any statement that would suggest that transwoman wouldn't be included when she talks about women. Because that is what they are, women. I find it highly misogynic to mock a woman like this and dismiss her brilliance and life work as being crazy or hysterical. Solanas was very poor. She was sexually abused by her father during her childhood. She financed her studies by prostitution. She was able to finish her studies even tho she was homeless. She wrote a play that Andy Warhol promised to read and consider to stage. When he choose not to he didn't return the manuscript even tho she reminded him and called many times. Later he confessed to have lost the play. She wanted a economical compensation but he ignored her. Remember, she was very poor. That was when she decided to shoot him. She felt like he controlled her life. After doing so she turned herself in to the police. Yes she was mentally ill, but she wasn't crazy. She just had an extremely shitty life and had no reason to care. That doesn't take away any of her brilliant conclusions in the manifesto. But i guess a liberal wouldn't be able to see this.

Tiberius Kirk she making fun of and critiquing men. Not masculinity. Also I don't think scum is satire. Maybe the first part about biology is but not the rest. Her description of how men act is in fact exactly how many men do act in reality.

Warhol loses her manuscript and ignores her. Yeah, that's total justification for shooting someone. That's not crazy at all.. oh, I'm sorry, "mentally ill". If I shot everyone that lost something of mine and/or owes me money, I would be a super serial killer, six ways from Sunday, right up there with Elizabeth Bathory!

So the new season of American horror story premieres next week and is supposed to tackle the 2016 election and the aftermath of a trump presidency (particularly it appears when it comes to women). It also stars Lena Dunham (ugh) who is playing Valerie Solonas. Here is part of what creator Ryan Murphy had to say about the theme of the season and the connection between Solonas and how women are feeling about the trump presidency: "Its about female rage and that's in the country now. Solonas wrote the Scum Manifesto. She told all women to kill men, and it was their only way to rise to power," Is he HONESTLY attempting to connect a woman who attempted to murder a person and said all men should be killed to women in present day using their voices to advocate for their rights, women peacefully protesting for those rights, and things such as the women's march in January??? Those two things couldn't be more different....and it's pretty offensive and wrong of him to equate the two....

I’m a non-feminist. But there are some men who I extremely dislike, and the petit bourgeois elites sustain the status quo. I think this book offers some impressive solutions to how to disrupt the current hierarchy. I don’t think we can create pure equality unless we redesign the human race and modify everyone into genderless cyborgs, that way everyone will ACTUALLY be equal. So, we will have to live with biological binaries, and people can have their additional pronouns and post-gender theory expressions as long as we can have strong masculine institutions that teach men how to be men, and learn how to manage male mental health. And And good female institutions for women to reach achieve their full unique potential as woman. But due to the conflict between the binarists and the transhumanists, or the WOKE left and the far right I think there will be incredibly destructive and horrific battles.
