Reading, Understanding and Filling the Nikahnama - My Personal Experience

Hi Guys! I often hear from women who say they didn't even get a chance to read their Nikahnama so I thought I would share my experience. Please understand your rights and responsibilities and fill out the form to the best of your understanding.

its definitely informatory. And its good that women, are educating others. Believe me i came here for the same purpose as these other women to understand what am i signing. But for the mehr, i have heard the islamic/legal reason and also heard the cultural reason for not so big mehr. But honestly i have come to the conclusion even if you put a very hefty haq mehr, no amount of money can last you a lifetime. So i would like to just think of this as a gift only. Not as financial security. And in that sense it can be really any amount you want and agree to. I think approaching mehr with the thought of providing you financial security really cant last in the long run. I mean even 1 crore will last you only till a specific time. But the other point is that this will put a formal burden on the groom as well, until he pays it off. I means gifts can be of varying financial value but mehr is bound, unless the bride lets it go. Hopefully this does not happen, but if the bride is a bad person this will in turn make the groom the victim. Just my 2 cents on the topic. Again this is my personal opinion, feel free to disagree. A woman has khula but a groom has no khula.

Patriarch? What about equality in marriage only asking to take money from men is basically feminarch. If woman earn they should support their husband and give them rights of maintenance.

I don't entirely agree with you that it's too late to read, change your nikkah contract at time of signing. It is never too late. If you haven't had time to read and dont know what it says *then simply don't sign it* . How can anybody sign contract without reading it? Yes, this may cause a scene, people will talk, and parents may disapprove and be angry, but don't give up your rights to please parents, who are more worried about pleasing society and groom instead of worrying abput their daughters interest. The entire ritual of not allowing girls to read their nikah contract or, change it is based on ignorance (jahalat). Your video deserves more views but this shows the level of ignorance in Pakistani girls. Most dont know and don't care about their rights until things fo wrong. Then they cry and blame kismet. More views for dramas and tiktok but no interest in practical and legal matters effecting their lives. I am proud of you. You are intelligent and I wish you all the best in life.

Yes, I agree! It should never be too late and if someone sees something on their nikahnama that they find bothersome they must point it out. But generally the way nikah takes please, the woman (or man) isn’t really given ample time to read an understand the document. 5 or 10 minutes are not enough to do so in my opinion. That is why I suggest doing all this beforehand but ofc if you see something that you don’t agree with, you should point it out at the time of nikah too.

@@durresameenmirza9449 i know what you meant/mean. My point is simply people need to find courage and say no. Because the custom of handing the bride a paper to sign in front of guests is wrong and deliberate. The culture has designed this to deprive girls of their rights. Some times parents need tough love too. I am shocked how much ignorance there is in culture. And to then emotionally blackmail girls into giving up their rights for the sake of honour and shame. Omg it infuriates me. Parents need to learn. Better face momentarily embarrassment at nikkah then prelonged misery after nikkah because let's face it the cultytee has managed to stigmatize divorce for women to the the point it is presented as sinful. So divorce or khula is not easy. The culture has to change. Children must put their foot down. Grooms don't risk anything. Brides do. His rights are automatically covered under law. So we agree. It's just that the ignorance makes me angry when we insist on calling ourselves Islamic Republic. The real shame is denying girls their rights.

It is your duty to know your rights and to stand up for them and claim them. Claiming your rights are as practical as entering a marriage. It makes no sense to have a nikkah if you dont know or claim your rights. Allah gave you a tongue to speak and mind to think. Use them. And if parents wont listen, dont sign it. This ridiculous tradition of not allowing girls to read or change the contract has to change. You and only you can change it. Allah gave your rights. Why throw them away? Allah and islam is practical. The rights are not meant as decorative words. Pakistani culture is outdated.

It's important to remember that haq Mahr has to be paid before it t nikkah. There is no consummation with out according to the Quran. Secondly haq Mahr is also important for a woman applies for khula, then she can pay back the haq Mahr to get divorced. It's however best to reserve the right for unilateral divorce in the contract and avoid khula.
