I really appreciate the fact that you include reading fails in your vlogs as well as books you loved. I sometimes feel bad or like something is wrong with me when I don't like a book. It's makes me feel better when you discuss books you don't like along with the ones you do.

I feel your frustrations about forgetting details in books - I have the worst memory! I'm reading Shorefall right now and wow I forgot so much about Foundryside (even tho I only read it a year ago!). On the bright side, forgetting book details means you can re-experience these stories over and over and never get bored!

Roanhorse has won a bunch of awards (nebula, hugo etc) so I have really high excpectations

I was afraid with the vlog title that you didn’t like The Burning White which had me freaking out just a little. It’s so so so so great as a wrap up for the series.

I loved The Rage of Dragons so much! Definitely agree that if you don't like military-focused fantasy or lots of training montages this one will not be for you. I happen to love those things so it worked for me! I definitely saw throughout the book the problematic nature of the reader following/rooting for the colonizer. To me, it was hinted at enough that I know that Evan Winter is aware of that fact, and I hope it will be explored more in the next book. I think this book is such a focused narrative and really is just about Tao and his revenge journey, which made for the breakneck pacing and exciting plot that I liked so much. Sometimes fantasy authors try to do too much in one book, making them slow and so full of exposition, complex world building, dozens of characters, that we lose the story. Winter tells us only what we need to know and then moves on, which was a breath of fresh air for me. I think there is a lot of room in the subsequent books for Winter to expand on the colonizer theme- and he definitely should! If he doesn't in the next book, it will be a huge blind spot and that will bring my enjoyment of the sequel down. From where this book left off I think there will be lots of opportunity for the world to expand, and hopefully we will get more insight. This is such a long comment, lol, but like you I have a lot of thoughts!

I loved the Rage of dragons, but I feel you on some of the points you made. I mentioned in my review that there should have been multi prospectives, but to me it should have been from Zuri, she was really there to info dump when we could have gotten political intrigue from her side. We did not hear enough from the women in the book considering it was a matriarchal society.
@MegBookishRamblings4 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly fine to reread a series especially if it's a favorite. I've had to reread some books in series when there's a long time between the books being published and for sure when the books are chunky. At times it's almost like reading for the first time because some series it's been a while since I've read and much of the info was forgotten. As long as you're enjoying what you read, that's really what matters.

Last year I got into listening to audiobooks while reading along in my physical copy, but I found that I got distracted more easily and I didn't really remember what I was reading. Rage of Dragons was meh for me so I think it just bypassed me and I believed the hype. Merphy compared the soldiers to the bridge men in Stormlight so my expectations were sky high (heh no pun intended). So much battle & training, wish there was more character development cos Tau stayed very samey for me. :( But omg, The Burning White!!! A top 5 fave of mine from last year. I understand where you are coming from when you talk about the Omehi feeling like colonizers. However, for this to technically be true, the hedeni people would need to be exploited. As it is, the Omehi were merely conquerors of the peninsula and did not actually cross that ethical line. I thought the same as you in the first half of the book. It was only near the end my mind reminded me of this distinction. Anyway, love the vlogs! Happy fall!

I love rage of dragons. Spoilers below I personally felt that the end of the book gave enough acknowledgement to the fact that the chosen are not that great and hinted at future discussions with the native population both with the alliance that two forms with the son of the Chief (can't remember his name it's been awhile) and with learning about how the dragon's are controlled. I think also knowing it's the first of I think 4 books I knew not all the issues would be addressed fully in the first book. Also the few times we were in the perspective of the native fighters added to that recognition of the chosen not being the good guys.

Thanks for taking the time to comment - love seeing everyone’s thoughts! I detested Tao as a main character. I'm fine with flawed characters, but the amount of times he screwed over his friends really made me angry. Along the lines of him rising against the oppressors, there's literally a scene where he tells someone not to fight it because it's never going to change. He's asked to help and he outright says no. All he wants from going against the nobility is his petty revenge against something that he caused and refuses to see that it's all his fault. It's HIS fault his dad died, it's HIS fault he was exiled. Everything has been his fault and he just wants to blame someone else, but not do anything about it besides what will bring him instant gratification. It made me DNF it with less than a hundred pages to go.
