Hi Jack! Sorry for making you count 😂and thank you for the lovely bonus video! The anecdote about meeting Bernardine Evaristo is really funny, and that totally counts as a conversation! I haven't read the book but, having heard your impressions and thoughts, I can see how conflicted and tossed around one must feel as a reader with all of these complicated characters and relationships, it's a big ol' mess. One more book on the "24 in 2024 list" done and dusted, yay! 🥳

I think that authors have a dilemma....if they write all wonderful people & happy endings, they get bashed for a lack of realism...so they write a realistic person (like we see all around us) & we get a sexist, somewhat unlikable guy who cruises the cemeteries. You know me, I would prefer the sunshine and roses world in my books, but it sounds as if they went for realism in this story. It is hard to know how to feel, as having lived during times when society was cruel and non-tolerant, I can totally see these scenarios happening and seeming to be the only choice. I once had a clergyperson tell me if I married it would "cure" me and it was my only hope of escaping "the fires". I asked, "would you want your daughter marrying a gay man?" and he said that was not "God's plan" for her, but there were women desperate to marry who would be happy to do so. The point of my ramble is that during those times, the pressure to conform was great by family, church, workplace...so as tragic as it seems, I imagine this book's storyline has played out repeatedly. By the way, was it just me, or was there a racy bathtub scene in this video??😉

Yeah, you are very right. I didn’t really take in the context of the time period, I just wanted that grand love story! My goodness, I can’t believe that happened to you.
