You hit the nail on the head when it comes to social media consumerism and social media aesthetic pressure. But like you said, I would listen to a whole video of you talking in one spot. I find uneventful videos very comforting and relatable!

I deleted all my social media a few years ago and now only use KZbin. It made me realise that making sure you get photos of everything to be able to post literally doesn't improve the quality of your life. I find it so much more freeing to just live in the moment like you were saying 💜
@BookswithBrittanyАй бұрын
Yes even with my personal Instagram I notice it’s way better living in the moment and I hateeee trying to get a good photo to post, so I rarely do

I love that you brought up the consumerism and pressure to make everything aesthetic to the detriment of your sanity and finances. I wish more people would talk about this and can’t wait to hear more of your thoughts!

I understand 100% what you’re talking about. I haven’t posted on my bookstagram in forever. There’s this pressure to not only look great and have your content look great, but I also feel pressure to read a certain number of books per month. I’m a mom to a very busy 4 year old and I want to be present for as many moments as I can with her, so I read 1-2 books per month if I can. So it makes me feel like I’m not reading enough. But it’s okay for seasons of life to look different and we shouldn’t put pressure on ourselves! We just need to have fun and remember what’s really important. I value raw and real moments over aesthetics any day. Not trying to shade anyone who does a lot for aesthetics but it’s not me and it’s okay. We shouldn’t feel we all need to do things in a similar way. This is why you’re my favorite and why I’m so glad you’re back. You’re not afraid to speak your mind! Also for skincare, have you tried Japanese or Korean skincare before? I have very sensitive skin too and Japanese skincare products help me so much. When I go back to Japan I really want to grab you some stuff to try ❤

💜 resonate so much with your chat at the end about the aesthetic life. Sometimes I wish I had that life, but honestly I think it would stresse out or add more stress to my day or take me out of if the moment. Sometimes I regret not have "the picture" but ultimately I would rather be fully present for the moment

100% relate to the pressure of being aesthetic because it feels like the norm to BE aesthetic. But i love your vlogs the way it is 🫶🏾

I feel you on aesthetics. I am not an aesthetic creator. A lot of times I don't even think I'm all that likeable. I try to just focus enjoying bookish discussions but the comparison trap gets to me pretty regularly. I don't think there is anything necessarily wrong with making aesthetic content. The problem is that it's the only kind of content algorithms reward.

I love Whittynovels so much as well and really relate to your feelings of being sucked into the consumerism and aesthetic demands of social media. I used to spend so much money on brand name clothing and accessories and makeup and housing items just to feel like I was “fitting in” and it made me constantly miserable and overwhelmed. For health reasons, I stepped back from social media almost entirely a few years ago and it’s been monumental for my mental health and financial stability, but I realize that it’s such a core part of modern society and being entirely disconnected from it it very hard and not always feasible I am proud of you for realizing how much it affects you and in what ways! Having that kind of self-awareness can help at least 💜

Yes, absolutely so much pressure. I even see it with people I know, running after the latest stuff which is fine, but it’s more for show than anything else. Being aesthetic doesn’t come to me naturally either 😂 and I love these vlogs I’m catching up to all the new videos and you and Olivia Reads a Latte are my favorite.

I completely agree with you regarding social media. It’s hard not to get caught up in it, but when you take a step back and realize it’s just fleeting dopamine hits…It’s completely meaningless, and often a hit on your mental health. So not worth it! Anyways, 💜 you and so glad you’re back at it!

💜 I love hearing about your skincare journey as I am also just starting my retinol/“better” aging skincare journey. I tried tret and it made my eczema super angry 😡 so I had to take a step back, take everything out (vitamin C, other retinols and actives), heal myself, and I an slowly re-introducing things. Now I was prescribed Tazarotane instead. We will see… I might start it tonight 🤞🏼

Oh my God, yes. I definitely feel you on the consumerism and the aesthetic traps. I've slowly soured on the whole "Special Edition" thing for books. I sought some out occasionally but at this point it's unhinged. I saw an edition of one book - just ONE - presale price was 700 dollars. WTAF. Aesthetics have just started feeling very fake sometimes to me too 😅 I just want to talk about books man. How hard is that?? But yes. Post whatever. I always watch even if I don't comment. I know a lot of us are like that. We just enjoy you and your thoughts and words. 💜💜

I'm so happy that more and more places are including special editions. I never got to have many until now because they always almost exclusively came in book boxes and I've literally never bought a book subscription box. I recently bought the Her Soul to Take special edition and it is absolutely stunning, it's my favorite dark romance, and I'm asking for the Things We Never Got Over special editions for Christmas because I love those books as well!

Yea I can’t stand social media consumerism and the want or need to have every single new release and have a plethora of TBR to the point it’s overwhelming, which is why I love that you support the local library! (As someone who works at a library I adore library supporters!) but as far as keeping an Instagram aesthetic, pish posh. I see right through those fake profiles. Which is why I follow both your instagrams for REAL POSTS!! 💜💜💜

omg yes totally agree on the last bit of the vid. it's like it's not even real life! and in regards to vids or vlogs I'd much rather watch someone just chillin and chattin even in the same spot(s) without a million jump cut edits... all the heavy edits can be jarring.. there is one channel in particular that I won't name that cuts out every single "dead air" or "um" or breath and it drives me crazy... it's just not natural. I get editing some of it out, I do a little bit myself but sometimes it seems excessive.

I couldn't tell you how annoying the 'perfect bookstagram/tok/tube' channels seem to me. It's quite funny that you mentioned Whitney 'cause her and your channels are the few I watch just because they feel more human than the played up ones. I get it, they're pretty and I even love, when my usuals branch out and do a 'aesthetic' post, but to try and keep that up must be exhausting, 'cause it's exhausting for me to watch that as much as make it. Sp keep keeping it real! 💜
