Quick clarification why I don't use the Scaling options (within the inspector). Simple, Power Bins!! I just find it easier to set up an Adjustment Clip, name it 219 and put it in a power bin and then I just drop it into any project I decide to do in wide-screen in the future.

Great video! Been looking for this. Could you PLEASE explain what you mean here? Seems an easier way than manually scaling each clip via inspector. "Setup an Adjustment clip, name it 219 and put in power bins - drop into any project". Completely lost me! Please explain in simple term like the video how we could go about doing this for those of us with timelines that has 800 clips 😄

It's much easier to do so: Project settings -> Master settings( change your resolution here) -> Image Scaling (below Master settings) -> Mismatched resolution files -> Center crop with no resizing. and you DON'T need to add an adjustment clip and you DON'T need to change the scale manually.

You're correct, this is the correct way to do this... your comment needs to be bumped up to the top. It's unbelievable how many people are following this tutorial and re-scaling their videos when all they need to do is crop the master video frame with no rescaling. Serious head scratching*

Nice nice! As you’ve mentioned, cant add end screens at this ratio... and on those very similar to the Scope looking ratios... so I use 2:1. It’s a bit of a compromise and I get some slight black bar on the left and right, but it fills the iPhone screen and gives me end screen capabilities! To get the scale automatically I use the option to fill full screen with crop in settings, then you don’t need the scaling adjustment layer. Alternatively, select all and scale all at the same time is usually possible, the adjustment layer for all the clips feels a bit clumsy on a timeline with more than one layer of clips especially with potentially different ratios! Not bashing, just highlighting some potential trip hazards!

Question for resizing or resolution changes and the frame outline: these frame outlines are shown against a *black* layout background which means the frame pillar boxes, which are of course also black, are difficult to discern. I realize there are View options to show the frame outline, Safe Area, Center Point, etc. But Preferences didn't seem to show any layout background color option, for example, to lighten the background to distinguish it from the black frame pillar boxes, perhaps to make the layout background slightly lighter, a dark grey. Any suggestions??? Thanks for these helpful tips!

3:09 same, but instead of position goto retime and scale click scale and change to fill. More shortly with three step, right click on timeline thumbnail on media tab on the top left of edit page, select timeline setting and check the box for scale entire image to fill or fit. Click save. And all the video clips in the timeline will automatically set to respective aspect ratio.

Very cool, MrAlex. Another approach may be to use Super Scale on the clip set to "x2" to upscale them to 4K. That way, when you zoom in to fill, you won't lose sharpness. What do you think? Would that work?
@MrAlexTech
@MrAlexTech 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya Todd. Yeaaah you absolutely could 🙂👍 Although you'd only need to do that if you go up a resolution. For example: If I shot in 1920 x1080 and then set my timeline to be 1920 x 800, the timeline is actually smaller than the footage. Even though I have to 'zoom in' within Resolve I'm not actually losing any resolution. At the end, I still have the same number of horizontal pixels i.e. 1920. We just loose some pixels at the top and bottom (1080 Vs 800). I just have to zoom to make it fit. Hopefully that makes sense? If you wanted to blow up your 1080p to go into 2560x1080 then yeaaah absolutely use Super Scale 🙂👌

Hi Nice vid. I wonder if you can help me. I've feel like I've looked everywhere but can't find a solution to my problem. I want to edit 4k videos which are either shot in 16.9 or 4.3 I'm unsure as to what is best yet. The camera I use apparently has a small sensor and is in 4.3 but can be changed to 16.9. That aside I want to play back across 2 monitors. Making it in effect 32.9 to fill both screens. The resolution of the monitors are 3840 x2169. So for it to fit horizontally I thought I would double the first number and leave the second as it is. But it won't physically let me type in the settings in project settings 7680 the double resolution across both monitors . So what I've done is half the second number to 1080 this works but then the quality is not as sharp. I'm totally new to this so probably doing something wrong. I tried in time line too but that didn't work either. Any suggestions.

NEW Timeline / Edit Timeline - Mismatched resolution files - Center crop with no resizing I do it this way... is this correct?
@jmalmsten
@jmalmsten 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's just as correct. Depending on the footage. With that setting it will do a pixel by pixel size match. If either dimension is bigger it'll get cropped. But also, if your footage is smaller you end up with black pixels since it doesn't zoom in or out by default. If you instead in that menu choose full size with crop, Resolve will fill the screen with the footage. Zooming in until there is no black outside regardless of the actual pixel resolution of the footage. So if your timeline is 1920x800 and the footage is 4096x2160 it will default it so that you see the full width and crop the top and bottom. If the footageis 5640x360 (for some reason, I'm just reaching for examples) it will do the same. But zoom in so the vertical is just filled and crop out most on the horizontal sides. In practical terms the setting is basically asking you what you want the scale factor to mean. It will default all clips to scale of 1. Half is .5 and double is 2. But how editors want that 1 to be used can be subjective. Doing it with the adjustment layer like in the video here does only make it so that several clips scale by the same amount. It doesn't change what the scale factor means which the mismatch feature does. So... Yes... Depending on how you want to work... It is correct. :)

I would imagine the downside to this technique is the zoom. At 4K you're probably fine, but 1080p it may not look as good because you're zooming-in on the footage.
@MrAlexTech
@MrAlexTech 3 жыл бұрын
You're actually not losing any resolution so shouldn't be any loss of quality unless you go up a resolution. If use the 1920 x 800 as the best example. Your footage is 1920 (horizontal lines) x 1080 (vertical lines). We crop the timeline to be 1920 x 800. The horizonal lines are exactly the same, but we lose lines at the top and bottom which makes it look wider. Resolve simple 'fits' the footage to the timeline by squeezing it down. When we zoom to make it fit, what we're really doing is just making our 1920 wide footage fit the 1920 wide timeline :)
@brthiebauth

@@MrAlexTech Makes sense. As long as you don't go beyond a 1.35x scale on the 1920x1080 on a 1920x800 timeline example you would preserve the image detail. Beyond that you will start to degrade the image more and more as you go to a larger zoom. Thanks again for the video and the information!
