Serious question. What exactly is the information being copied down?
@GaryMCurran4 жыл бұрын
@@hello_im_kt this was two years ago that I posted to this, so I had to go back and listen to it again. The RV-6 penetrated a TFR, or Temporary Flight Restriction area. The TFR ran from the surface to 17,999'. I'm not sure what altitude he was at, but I doubt he was at 18,000' or above, since he would have had to been on an IFR flight plan and in contact with an ATC facility. So, when the controller told him to get a pencil ready, he was in trouble. For one, he busted a TFR, not a good thing to do. So, he's going to have a talk with the FAA, probably at a local FSDO, or Flight Standards District Office. At the least, he probably will be referred back to a flight instructor to get some instruction and maybe a check ride. If he went into the FSDO and said something like 'I forgot there was a game (the Super Bowl, really?) he might have gotten away with a slap on the wrist. With this infraction, though, not monitoring 121.5 and not responding quickly, he's probably going to get more than a slap on the wrist. He might have lost his privileges for a period of time, unlikely he'd lose them permanently, unless something else was going on. But, pencil and advise ready to copy means a visit with the Feds.
@hello_im_kt4 жыл бұрын
@@GaryMCurran Hi Gary, thank you so much for the informative response. I'm still intrigued why the controller told RV-6 to get a pencil ready. Would't it be more efficient for the controller to directly contact FAA to report the incident? If the controller told RV-6 to write down some information to self report the incident, there is a chance the RV-6 would never report the incident.
@GaryMCurran4 жыл бұрын
@@hello_im_kt Oh, you can believe me when I say the FAA already had all the information at hand. The reason the controller told the pilot was to make sure that the pilot contacted them, and the FAA didn't have to come searching for the pilot. Since the FAA was flying the Citation, they probably had video of the aircraft registration number, and had already looked up the pilot and plane. Anyone can do that by going to the FAA Registry and looking up the 'N-Number' of the aircraft. No, the reason they told the pilot to get a pencil ready (pilots hate using pens because things change) was so that he could contact the FAA as soon as he got on the ground. Be assured, the FAA was awaiting his call, and if they hadn't heard from him within 24 hours, they would have started enforcement action against him, with might have included pulling his license permanently. NO PILOT ANYWHERE wants to hear those words, because they know what it means to them.

OK, just throwing this out there. But for those that aren't familiar, TFRs are not common for sports games. This is the SuperBowl, and there is a ridiculous amount of added security. Knowing there is a game going on, and putting two and two together that there are flight restrictions in the area, are separate thought processes. But pilots need to always check for TFRs on their flight plan before take off. What is much more likely here, is that the pilot had a different intended course, and accidentally flew into the TFR. At least that is what I would be saying at that point, lol.
@ConspicuouslyObvious3 жыл бұрын
@@jacksonblunt7707 partly true. Super Bowl TFRs have been controlled by NORAD since 2002. They fall under a different realm of rules and red tape, essentially making it a military anti-terrorism Op. Thus, it falls outside of the PCA. It’s typically a combo of local, state, and federal authorities in the airspace, with USAF having lethal command. Typically they do rely on the closest AW to the stadium, and will use ANG aircraft, but they can and have used active duty AWs before.

I could see that possibly working for SFO and OAK but SJC is literally about 7ms from Levi's stadium..

Most TFRs are accompanied with some language such as "unless otherwise authorized by ATC" Most commercial flights would be filing IFR flight plans, have a specific transponder code, and be authorized by ATC to fly a specific route.

@weblure6 жыл бұрын
Ideally, they'd be shot down over the least populated area, miles away from the stadium. Some debris raining down over houses is better than an entire aircraft ramming full speed into a stadium densely packed with people. With the former, there's a chance that some unlucky pedestrian will be struck by a piece of debris, but with the latter, multiple casualties and injuries are guaranteed. It's all about damage control, and also not letting the terrorist do what they want. If it was something like and airbus, though... There'd definitely be no happy ending.

Every time there is any kind of sporting event on or large event or Presidential visit a TFR (temporary flight restriction) is automatically generated. Many people flying miles and miles away and have no idea the Yankees are playing that afternoon, ect, are getting busted. With the internet it is easy to check, but it's just not something most pilots think about as normal leisurely Sunday afternoon flight pre-planning. Check the weather, check the plane, lets go have some fun. Nope. now it's check the weather, check the plane, then check with the Orwellian named Department of Homeland on what areas they have deemed "temporarily un-free for your own good". Its just an ID for the plane involved. "Omaha" is just an indication as to the air group it is attached to or what business it has. In this case US Customs Service operates the plane meaning that it engages planes suspected of import taxation or other crimes committed such as drug transport. At this particular moment it was assigned the task to intercept planes that came into the restricted airspace around the Santa Clara stadium so you would not cheerfully fly in and cause damage to said event without being challenged by American terrorism law enforcement first.
