VASAviation - Hi, the balloons described in this recording are unmanned hot air balloons that unfortunately became a tradition in my country, long time ago. Their occurrence greatly increase during the months of June, July and August during St. John's festivities. It is considered a crime against aviation safety, but local authorities are slow to enforce that. The CENIPA, the Brazilian center for investigation and prevention of accidents made several comprehensive studies about this problem, made many suggestions but so far no decisive move has been made. Few years ago, in São Paulo, the police apprehended one of the largest ever built: the monster was 190ft tall! Thankfully this one didn't make into the air but the tradition lives on. We are all afraid that some major problem is a matter of time.

VASAviation - Another thing, the balloons depicted in your video are the regulated manned balloons, their activity follows international rules and they are not allowed anyway near any TMA in Brazil. Research for images using this key "Brazil balao sao joao" and you know how my enemies look like. Then you can change the pictures so the other subscribers who look for quality information in your channel, like myself, but are not Brazilians, will have a better idea of our problem. Many thanks for sharing.

Ps: these are NOT manned regulated hot air ballons, they are traditional unmanned balloons, and they are also illegal, a fire hazard, and a threat to aviation safety. On the last speech, GOL 7727 was not saying what the translation said, he was saying that all of these balloons had cangalhas, witch are wooden structures, up to 80 ft high,hanging underneath the balloon. They usually carry fireworks or a huge flag, just to add to the danger
@riverlady982 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, I wondered why this would be going on because it just seems insane. Although I'm honestly still wondering why people would let giant balloons go anywhere near an airport?
@FabioMonteirovsm Жыл бұрын
@@riverlady982 Hot air balloons like that are a tradition in the month of June/July, due to a traditional festival called São João. There are competitions between groups of people as to who makes the prettiest one, the tallest one etc. They are forbidden, but very hard to crack down on, because they dont have a fixed base to launch or place of congregation, and also not the highest priority for the police, unfortunately.
@fsxprofis68677 жыл бұрын
just to clarify, I used to live in this region and they are unmanned air ballons released illegally by certain rival groups. they compete to see which ballon flies the farthest and 'looks the best'. These "festive balloons" seem to be a common occurence in Brazil, it's incredible that ATC was completely useless and apparently had no standard procedure to respond.
@octaviovaladaoferreirinhad26897 жыл бұрын
silosins There is pretty much nothing atc can do against those balloons, other than warning the pilots, upon reporting from other aircraft, or in extreme cases putting them on hold or diverting the planes to their alternatives. Local publications like AIP and notam are issued to warn the pilots about their possibility. These balloons provide very weak radar echo, often taking radar operators by surprise. Tower controllers are able to spot them visually but still, since the construction of the balloons follows absolutely no standards, you can't effectively judge size or distance. This problem has been haunting us for a very long time due to a local religious tradition that escalated into a near professional activity for the balloon makers. It's a crime that should be fought by police authorities, but it is not being properly enforced.

First off, I really lile your channel guys! Keep up the good work. Lots of arguments down in the comments, I feel like sharing my thoughts: While English is the default language of aviation, pilots and controllers are free to use the country's official language in communications. My honest opinion though, is that having some pilots speaking only Portuguese and some speaking English really does contribute negatively to the overall situational awareness of everybody. The balloons they are talkinh about here aren't your small, run of the mill silk paper balloon. They are huge, sometimes a good 20 feet accross or more, and powered by a propane cylinder. So no, they aren't less dangerous than a birdstrike, much to the contrary. No, there isn't a specific law that forbids these flying bombs from being launched. The main Brazilian aviation law, Law no. 7565, says it's illegal to create any threat or impediment to air navigation, and that is frequently used to argue against the practice of balloon launching. The problem is that not only there is still a strong culture of balloon building and launching, many state and city laws actually allow balloons to be launched, with or without restrictions to where and when. Which is why balloon builders are never prosecuted around here. It's one of the many, many, many glaring blindspots of Brazilian laws, unfortunately.

Brazil is a continent-wide country that speaks portuguese. And with the exception of Suriname (dutch) and French Guiana (french), every country in South America speaks spanish, which sounds lot similar to portuguese. Given that, the number of foreign language flights is almost negligible. Samuca teixeira once i called the cops when i saw people in campinas sp releasing such balloons, the cops told me there was nothing they could do and hang up. This is a federal crime and they cant do nothing about,? pretty sure this i a banana republic public system behavior like every thing else in our country I will not change until we stop pretending thats is all ok, we have to face the reality and the reality is that we are a banana rep.

Why is there so much talk in portugese, I thought all of this was supposed to be in english. ANA pilots don't talk to the controllers in Japanese either

all around the world, ATC uses local language with local pilots.
@cannedspaghetti18546 жыл бұрын
ATC there speak Protugese because some of the locals don't understand even simple English, they speak Portuguese to ensure a safer airspace. They can speak English to forgien aircraft as they do not speak Portuguese. It's to ensure safety.

but they were not just GA pilots, they where proper airline pilots, shouldn't they have english training at their flight school? in the Netehrlands, we aren't even allowed for PPL if we do not have the english language down

Well..I suppose you are right, think there's so many dangers and close calls, more than ppl are aware of. Surprised there's not more accidents, pretty impressive safety, considering the amt of planes with millions of ppl flying everyday, crazy.

Brazil is a continent-wide country that speaks portuguese. And with the exception of Suriname (dutch) and French Guiana (french), every country in South America speaks spanish, which sounds lot similar to portuguese. Given that, the number of foreign language flights is almost negligible. It's one foreign flight for every like fifteen domestic flight that will takeoff or land in São Paulo airspace (counting the smaller, non-international Congonhas airport). And it's a busy airspace. So, no one is actually giving a fuck. It's just not necessary if you compare it to Europe which has dutch, french, english, spanish, russian, egyptian, arab, german, american, brazilian and many other languages in the same frequency.

This shows what mess South America is.

Pathetic also that you arrive into international airports like this, where crazy shit is, more often than not, going down, and absolutely nobody is speaking in English. Russia, China, and really, any third worlder are pretty goddamn awful for this. They all can, but none of them do. Oh well. It's only safety I suppose...
