@@vanitymaze2588 WELL the show should be accurate as much as possible, considering there are actual doctors part of the show's production - medical shows in general have real doctors acting as consultants to producer, and one of the producer is an actual M.D. - not all doctors in real life have the same point of view or same methods, but you have to be accurate on protocol - some shows / movies may not always be, for DRAMATIC effect, and I think the worst is the shocking a patient who's in asystole, haven't seen this mistake in any of the medical dramas I have watched so far, but have seen it in movies :P

I had a really awesome interaction with a patient yesterday when I acted as a human instead of as only the blood test lady. While checking the patient's details, I confirmed with her that she was an inpatient at a local psychiatric hospital. I recognised the hospital because I was a patient there too, and I casually mentioned to her I had been a patient there too. I asked her how it was since the renovation. She thanked me for being open about it because she had been really struggling with feelings of stigma and shame, and to have me, a random health professional casually mention I had been a patient there too had just helped with that stigma. Then we continued the conversation about stigma, the choice to tell friends, how lonely it is when friends don't understand and why it feels safer not to tell them. After I had taken her blood, I told her "I don't know if you need to be reminded of this, but it gets better" she nodded, and I continued "when I was there, I knew it could get better, but I was in so much pain I didn't think it would be worth it. I thought the amount of pain I am in right now isn't worth the effort it will take to get better, but I was wrong, it was worth it." Then I asked her if she would like a hug and gave her a big hug, rubbing her back and telling her "you have got this." She told me I had made her day, but she made my day too. It is moments like that where I love my job.

I love meeting people like you in the medical field. I've been treated like a problem, told I was faking, told I was a drug seeking, ignored. I absolutely understand how hard the profession is but most of us don't want to pester our doctors or seem like a problem. That's how serious medical issues are overlooked. Overworked professional and a patient who doesn't want to complain. It's a recipe for disaster. Patients want to feel like they are talking to another person.
@loftyradish6972
@loftyradish6972 4 ай бұрын
@@feraltaco4783 Absolutely, and despite how stressful the job may be, it is never an excuse or justification to not treat people like human beings. I think for a very long time, doctors considered conditions they couldn't test for to not be real. They decided the patients were imagining their symptoms instead of accepting that biomedicine isn't perfect, and we just don't have the knowledge and technology to test for everything yet. But that doesn't mean it isn't real. When patients are made to feel like their symptoms aren't real, they either accept and ignore them, or get labelled a hypochondriac and even if they try to seek help, just get patted on the head and sent home. Hope you are doing better and have found some decent health professionals, they are out there.

One of my patients (I treat their varicose ulcer) told me about a time they went to the hospital, it was a teaching hospital so the doctor brought some medical students with her.. The doctor asked the students what they saw, and they immediately went for the physical symptoms. Never acknowledging the patient as a human being, never saying hi, asking how the patient was doing, just seing a body with a problem.. This is a patient that is extremely nervous of doctors, it's so important to remember to be a fellow human.

Lise Normann I see that a lot as well. I see that difference especially amongst medical students versus nursing students who ask the patients questions and get to know them on a more personal level. Most doctors really are brilliant but like he has said in a previous episode, they spent so much time with their noses in books for obvious reasons that they forgot how personalize situations. Thankfully, nurses are there to pull the two together! ☺️ We are all a team and are working towards a common goal!

@@jameson1239 you'd be surprised the missteps that get made in prescribing medication for psychiatric conditions - and I'm not being critical of the doctors here, but diagnoses can vary a hell of a lot. Also some medication is prescribed "off label" - so for example one of my prescriptions is seroquel, an antipsychotic, but for me it's meant to tackle depression and insomnia. And for me it works well! On the other hand, give my sister seroquel and she loses her mind and has a really bad reaction. It's not as easy as saying "these medicines are for x which clearly has different symptoms to y" because you don't know the patient history or what symptoms the prescription is trying to address.

I know in so many of your videos you tell doctors to 'be human' and to be honest and treat the patient as a person, this is something I really appreciate. A few years back I was diagnosed with what's called minimal change disease - a very rare kidney problem for someone my age at least (was 19 at the time) and it took four months to get the treatment I needed because the doctors kept brushing me off as a hysterical teenager who was only gaining weight 'like most people due when they turn twenty'. The day I was admitted into the hospital, i had gone the day before because I was starting to have trouble breathing and this doctor found fluid in my lungs (I had accumulated so much excess fluid since my kidneys were storing the fluid instead of getting rid of it that there was nowhere else to put it but my lungs) but he still sent me home despite my protests. I came back the next day because I could no longer walk or feel my legs and had collapsed on the sidewalk. The same doctor saw me again and still brushed off my concern saying that I was 'fine' so the nurse who had been with me since I arrived called for another doctor. This Doctor arrived ten minutes after my dad (who was at work and got called when the ambulance picked me up) took one look at me, turned to my dad since he could see I was hysterical and told him; 'I'm not trying to scare you but we need to admit your daughter right now. I believe her organs are starting to shut down, she could be dying. At the very least her heart isn't circulating the blood to her legs which is why they're discoloured and she's not breathing properly. We need to start treating her for these problems while we find out what's really going on.' This meant the word to me because he treated me as a person and actually started to treat me and saw that I was indeed a very sick woman and not just a hysterical teenager. He thought it was probably my kidneys and explained this to me before he did the biopsy to find out it was minimal change disease. He saved my life and was honest with me and my family from the start which I value so much. Sorry that this is so long, but it just stuck with me and like you say, some doctors get so caught up in routine and fail to communicate with the patients and it can lead to situations like mine. So, having a doctor treat me like a human being and tell me what was going on - every step of the way really helped make it a lot less scary and gave me so much hope. So thank you. Great job with the videos. Keep up the great work.

It does not say he fired an entire department he says he closed the program down for a year, he specifically says it was to build something better. So more than likely non-essential staff may have lost their jobs but all the doctors and nurses, nope. I think in other articles I read it says how he worked with them to build a better program. So yeah nice try but once again you can not find anything that actually says he fired everyone, only that he closed the program down which does not equal firing everyone.

@TheKnight212
@TheKnight212 4 жыл бұрын
General Grievous no it doesn’t. Closing a program doesn’t mean anyone got fired. Considering he then says how he worked with them to make it better it’s likely they just got moved to different areas in the hospital or moved onto the new program of creating a better program. So again there is no evidence he fired an entire department and he never says he fired an entire department. Prorframs in hospitals get shut down that doesn’t mean every doctor and nurse involved gets fired. They get shifted with maybe a few fired. Not an entire departments worth.

I have a suggestion for your "Real Doctor Reacts" series. You've mention a few times how the medical world is constantly evolving, so I was thinking it would be cool to look at some really old medical tv dramas, (like from the 60's through the 80's) and see how much medicine has changed over the last 50 years or so. I can only name a few shows like M.A.S.H, Emergency!, St. Elsewhere, and General Hospital. Not sure if any of these would work for your series though, but I figured that I would just throw them out there.

I’m a nurse on a trauma/gen surg floor, and what you said about surgeons doing unnecessary procedures is spot on. We had a surgeon who only practiced at our hospital for a short time, but he was incredible at putting the patient first and doing what’s most conservative. He started treating small bowel obstructions with oral contract because it promotes peristalsis. It was incredible to watch these patients improve over a day or two vs being in the hospital for a week with bowel complications. We need more surgeons like that.

Here's the real reason for unhealthy food in hospitals: Hospitals outsource meals and cafeteria goods to the lowest bidders, especial public hospitals that can't afford a good service on donations alone. The thing that irks me the most is that these companies that provide meals to the hospitals are STILL TRYING TO PROFIT off of doctors, nurses, and sick people.

But been offered to have other shoulder, hips, knees, and ankles done too but I'm done, no more surgeries unless they are life threatening... I say pain meds, ice, exercise - surgeons say "pills aren't a permanent fix" but after 5 regular surgeries & one horrid experimental surgery on the one arm to still be in major daily pain... Surgeries aren't a permanent fix either in my opinion. 😉😁😢😎🤐

The "Remember you are taking care of a human being" part is so important. I'm glad you said something about it. Until my most recent doctor I was someone who was terrified of going to the doctors or even dentists because I somehow always ended up with someone who didn't remember that. My dentist wouldn't even speak to me. He would talk to the nurse over me and refer to me as "Patient" and wouldn't even really look at me. My doctors would do similar things. For example I had the swine flu (sp?) and had to have a very long swab put up my nose to test for it. I was terrified and the doctor just grabbed my arm and shoved it up with little to no warning. It hurt very badly and scared me (I was maybe 12 or 13). After when I was trying not to cry she just said "You're fine." and left the room. The wonderful doctor I have now gives me pep talks on being happy and when I had to explain a night terror I had to her and began to cry (I'm a baby I know) she hugged me and wiped my face with a tissue. I'm 17 now but I felt like a toddler all over again and she didn't shame me for it. She waited for me to calm down then even went as far as to compliment my eye color. Things like this can make a world of a difference for patients. Chances are if they are there something is going wrong in their life so a little kindness and compassion meaning everything. (I know I totally just went on a useless rant but oh well cx)

4:00 Dr.Mike makes a great point about encouraging patients to ask questions to their doctors. The problem is most patients fear the doctors will get upset at them and it will ruin the "relationships" if it really exists at some level. I ask many questions to my doctors because the more I know the better I can adjust my life to suit the doctors' treatments. But sometimes some doctors just get irritated answering me and diss my questions. That's why most patients dare not to speak up. If most doctors learn to communicate better and learn that we patients need to know more about our conditions so we can be better patients to them. We don't ask just to bug your ego but we ask because we want the best outcome, the same thing as you, doctors.

This is the best show for a doctor to reach to! Obviously attacks so many heath care issues rather than just the medicine. Truly one of a kind! KEEP REVIEWING!!

If you want to watch something a little more different, try watching 'Cells at Work' :D it's an anime that's based inside a human body and the main character is a red blood cell!

You HAVE to react to The Resident season 2 premiere!!! Power outage, heart surgery on a newborn, creating a sterile environment using a firetrucks headlights to see, etc. Of course there's relationship junk, but I'd be curious to see how realistic it is from your perspective!! 🙌

Since you guys have sooo much time farting around in KZbin comments complaining about tv spoliers (talk about first world problems), the baby lives, the sterile environment is for a kid who got shot, the outage was due to a hacker, and the two main characters try to have sex in the shower. Now that I've completely ruined your life with tv show spoliers (didn't realize it was that serious consideratng you could be watching instead of reading the comments), please go make yourself useful, solve world hunger and stop complaining about precious TV shows 🙄🙄🙄🙄, freaking humans man

Lol I promise when I watched New Amsterdam on Hulu I wondered what Dr. Mike would think about it. I think it's a cool show because it's based off a true story of that Medical Director

I enjoyed this show and yes, would like to see more of your reactions, but I also think the same of a lot of other doctor shows you've seen. And despite the things that I knew were untrue like what you can and cannot do against policy ect. I loved the fact that, so far at least, their aren't huge story lines based on romance. So far it seems to be a C or D story line at best.
@ZenMuff1n

Well, him being at odds with his wife/lover and actively chasing publicity rep, is kind of a hint on a future plot line.

Romashk That wouldn't bother me as long as those types of story lines stay more of a back burner arcs and plots and keep the medicine as the main story. It thinking along the lines of how the television show ER used to do it.
@ZenMuff1n

Buffy8Fan Yeah, I hope this won't be another Grace memorial hot bed too. It's just that there are hints for a romantic subplot of the main character. This actor being good at relationship drama, for one. I wouldn't set myself up for this being strictly medicine drama, is all.

J Saadati That's actually a thought a lot of people have. But in reality when someone doesn't have a pulse and chest compression's are asked for the person is dead and there's not really any damage worse than that. At least that's how I was taught to look at it. In situations where no pulse is not the case then yes you can do damage.
