I've been following Dr. Wiel's advice for 35 years. Just had a heart scan and at 60, no artery blocked more than 30%. Heart valves strong and no signs of cancer. Every marker of health good. I owe it all to his advise. Eat Real food and give up the rest.

Right before covid I began eating healthy. I cut out all sweaters in drinks and all processed carbs. I have lost 12” on my waist and have put all my levels back into what is considered very healthy for a man my age. I have done very little exercise and I actually each 2400-3000 calories a day. I continue to loose weight and my doctor is proud of me for nothing. I have done nothing, this is easier than any “diet” ever was. I hate to think how much time I wasted, I’m just happy to be free.

Ditto..wife is an Asian chef & still nags at me about disposing of the microwave 4-5 years ago..if it doesn’t look like it came from a tree or out of the ground, it ain’t food & I don’t eat it. I like the occasional bit of lamb or fish but it’s gotta be pasture raised lamb or wild caught fish..at 44 years of age, I feel faster, stronger, fitter & smarter than ever before & my family & friends don’t understand how this can be..it isn’t bloody rocket science..I only eat food which is nutrient dense & intended for us humans 🤷‍♂️

@@altagroenewald9094 I'd say going black and white will lead to disordered eating. No sugar or all the sugar is not a healthy way to think. The only time I'd say go no sugar is if you have absolutely no tendencies towards perfectionism and you have a severe unmanageable addiction to sugar. Otherwise, moderation is key. I actually don't plan my meals, I don't care to because I am one of those with disordered eating. I do intuitive eating and that's what has worked for me. Naturally, this way I described that I eat is what I fell into. Most days, I crave fats and proteins, some days I'll have sweets. I do have to avoid all lactose and gluten as I've been tested and am sensitive.

👃I whole heartedly agree with the need in our society to reduce the amount of sugars in our diet. Too much we let sugars control how we feel or what food we are going to eat. I have made it my goal to not be controlled by processed sugars and to be in control of my habits. It takes an effort to retrain your brain so sugars do not control the brain!

I eat meats, eggs, fish, nuts, berries, salads, tomatoes etc. Lost almost 50 pounds with a little walking exercise. If I have a bad day, just start again the next day. This is asked with much ignorance about how the situation is in Brazil but, is it at all possible to grow some of your own? Maybe a neighborhood community garden or exchanging home grown produce with neighbors? 🤷🏿‍♀️ I get the struggle to afford eating healthy, real food. Slowly adding to and growing a garden can gradually decrease your grocery bill and make room to buy things you can't grow yourself(meat, eggs, cheese). Just sharing my experience.

This was a wonderful lecture with your summary of so much important research. Every school child should be informed about what you have been saying. In Germany previously, real fruit juice was sold in 1-liter bottles. Now the cheaper brands are 2 1/2 liter bottles, which are chiefly sugar and coloring. Children apparently feel a necessity to have a bottle of this sugar solution in the vicinity. Obesity is also becoming a serious health problem. Tell us more about inflammation in future lectures.

The trend since 1900 has been to drop out produce from the diet. In 1900 US ate 130 lbs/yr/capita. By 2000, only 11. 11 lbs vs 130 lbs. In 1900 heart attack deaths were 3 percent, by 2000 over 50 percent. It's not what we eat, it's what we don't. And recall, in 1900 they didn't even have produce all year long.

These are really great but would you consider discussing diet strategies for people that are economically disadvantaged? Many of the options that he represents are out of reach economically for many people. For example, I know he recommends mushrooms but would canned alternatives be sufficient? @@cincin4515 I'm aware, just an idea. I think nearly everyone could grow a few Lettuce heads, tomatos or beans on their window sill if they actually wanted. I do. There's community gardens, guerilla gardening... If there's a will there's a way. And yeah sure, but those canned, frozen, whatever cheap things are also mostly ecologically devastating (overfishing, animal rights, monoculture and pesticide use etc.), and in terms of health there are concerns in some cases which is why I suggested fresh homegrown produce. Cant have it all I guess. If you're really poor (too bad) it's gonna be rice and beans for you, been like that forever.

Years ago I used to read the "Ask Dr. Weil" books from the library. This man has a moderate & common sense approach to everything. Very true that we in America have a "Super Size" Problem. Just looking around we can see that almost evvvveryone is overweight, and many are obese. People make every excuse they can think of for being overweight or fat - But the truth is, you don't get fat from eating little, less, or not tooo much!? Eggs, milk, whole wheat, nuts, vegetables, are good wholesome natural foods that we need to consume - If we're allergic to any of these, there's very likely something wrong with us, not the food, sorry to say. Very true, look at old movies old ads, and look at modern movies and modern ads. Even the models that advertise products are fat, like it's natural to be that way and more people can relate!!

Recent science shows overheated olive oil gives off the least amount of carcinagens than any other oil. It certainly can be used to saute and cook on lower heat settings. Higher heats make it bitter & smelly.

@@sharroon7574 I think vegetable oils are not food. I also think sugar is not food. I have been trying to boost vitamin k2 and d3. Salami, pepperoni, brei, organ meats, egg yokes, sauerkraut...all high in k2. So I guess all that low fat diet was bad.

Explain the Mediterranean Diet for me please
@cincin4515
@cincin4515 2 жыл бұрын
It's a bit of a fallacy. Nobody can agree on what it is because every Mediterranean region eats differently. The American version is.... vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, nuts, olive oil & legumes and some dairy.
@undergrace1808

It’s the standard American diet without almost all processed foods, oils are processed foods.

It should be, but there are different versions, more Whole Foods and no processed, with vert little animal flesh, and their secretions, along with a few processed foods like olive oil.

All what Cincin mentioned plus meat (beef, goat, lamb, game, innards), chees (cow, sheep, goat), bread (wheat flour, water, yeast, salt), pasta and couscous (durum wheat semolina), potatoes. In Italy a meal starts with an antipasto (Bruschetta, Insalata Caprese, Prosciutto e Melone,...) followed by a primo piatto (mostly pasta), a secondo piatto (meat, fish,...) and a dessert (fruits, dolce or formaggio).

The most studied version of the Mediterranean diet typically consists of the following foods: 1. A high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. 2. Olive oil is the primary fat source, used liberally in cooking and as a salad dressing. 3. Moderate amounts of fish and poultry are consumed, with little red meat. 4. Eggs are consumed moderately, and dairy products like cheese and yogurt are consumed in moderate amounts. 5. Nuts, seeds, and dried fruits are consumed regularly as snacks or toppings. 6. Wine is consumed in moderate amounts, usually with meals. 7. Sweets and processed foods are limited. Overall, the Mediterranean diet is rich in plant-based foods and healthy fats, and it has been associated with numerous health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.

He said the same thing which I have observed. Looking back at old movies you see how slim people were because they ate real food. It seems that every other person is fat or on the verge of being fat now days.

Question: Studies investigating the body's reaction to food (increase in blood shugar levels) to determine a spezific food's glycemic index used fasted people (not eaten in the last 12 houres) and gave them only the food of interest to eat. This means that the gycemix index tells you nothing more than what happens in your body when you eat a certain food - and only this food - when in a fasted state. So how does this relate to my diet? I am almost never in a fasted state and I certainly never only eat one food at a time (I put butter on my white bread which slows down metabolism)? Thx!

Hi, Dr. Weil. Great info! Do you have any insight on why my serum IgA level might be elevated? It was checked 5 years ago. The lab's upper end cut-off was 394, and mine was 451 and 3 years later, it was 423. I'm healthy and now age 49. I requested an SPEP which found polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, but doctor was unconcerned. Just curious if it's just 'normal' for some people.

The doctor says that vegetable oils are bad for us because of the high unstable polysaturated fat. My question is: what about coconut oil. It is over 95% saturated fat. It seems to have as much percentage saturated fat as butter and butter is supposedly heart healthy.
@FreshGreenMoss
@FreshGreenMoss Жыл бұрын
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Saturated fat is still very much linked to heart disease and the evidence just keeps getting stronger. There have been a few industry funded outlier studies that claim to have found the opposite but they're mostly garbage and we have a much larger body of evidence to the contrary. The problem is , the pro saturated fat studies were widely published as the industry wanted to confuse it's customers

People! Its possible to be skinny and unhealthy, its called "skinny fat" where you are skinny, but have unhealthy metabolic markers. Likewise, a person can have *some* extra weight and be basically healthy. And if you don't feel good on his recommendations, then don't follow them...diet is a very individual thing. For ex I feel best with zero grains and no eggs...i eat more veggies. Some people do great on a vegan diet... others, not so much.

Looks like "my taste" beats yours, as Molasses has been my personal favorite since childhood and contains less than half as much Fructose as your Maple Syrup. Also it contains higher levels of Potassium. Give it your consideration please The sugars in molasses are sucrose (29% of total carbohydrates), glucose (12%) and fructose (13%) (data from USDA nutrition table)

Dear M.D. Andrew Weil, I do not think that nature has made a mistake in making fructose sweet. It's just the perspective of how you look at it. The plants perspective, for example, the need to attract other animals to eat their fruits and by that spreading their seed. And in our turn, animals will get fat for eating fructose, that the stored fat can then be used during periods when no fructose is around.
