So, my wife and I were sitting here analyzing the various failure modes of your current guillotine design. Point by point: 1) the tracks should be recessed into the 4x4 so the blade has no space for lucky objects to slip into the wheels. 2) the distance between the first pair of track wheels and second is too short, allowing the blade greater mechanical advantage against the uprights causing them to bow out and the blade to derail. 3) the gap where the blade passes through is too wide, but obviously can't be made narrower until blade stability is achieved. This will prevent folding and binding of objects. 4) You need more power at the point of contact. Either greater speed or more mass. Consider creating a 2:1 pulley system with a release and adding mass to the blade. If you had through holes on the blade you could add additional plates of steel as needed for the cutting task. I'm an engineer and also a filmmaker/VFX CG artist. I love what you guys do and I love this guillotine channel! My wife is just intuitively smart.

You should redo the rail system so that the wheels you have are running on a track built within the sides of the guillotine. I think you'd lose some of the risk of derailing. Cutting out the excess space where the blade isn't would help a lot I'd imagine. Keep up the good work, 6 year fan of all corridor content, love what you guys do.

For example if the blade ran directly into the block they use for the drop then the gap could be smaller for cleaner and more visually pleasing cuts. There's a lot of redesign needed to reach the absolute best cutting potential, but Jake is pretty smart so I'm sure he'll figure out a good way to make it efficient.

Yo, sack the rail system you have. You could absolutely make it work, but it would be such a pain in the backside that it's not worth the effort. You might be better off replacing it with parallel roundstock (of some kinda steel), and linear bearings. Might take some time to work out what bearings, and what steel, but you can't bounce a rod out from within an enclosed cylinder. Also, safety-wise, it might be a better bet to stand further off and remotely trigger the drop with a big solendoid, especially if you ever try glass (or want to see what happens when the unstoppable force of the guillotine meets the immovable, indestructible object of Carbon Fibre). But, well done on the safety that already seems to be present - your literal death machine seems pretty safe. And keep making this top notch content!

Just to remind everyone that this was invented for cutting necks. Necks are squishy, elastic and gelatinous in some sort of way, they also are attached to a whole body that holds them down during the cut. Plastic and mettal are hard and inelastic, therefore they respond to great forces by being bent and shattering. Also, as these hard materials get force smashed by the blade, the blade also suffers that force back and is bent and shattered.

@@genericmeat Well, guillotine was built to avoid that problem in the first place, and it did a realy good job at that. Watch the previous video where they slice through multiple pineapples with quite clean cuts ! One neck was absolutely nothing for a guillotine. Guillotine was built to replace the Axes during death sentences because axes could fail at choping the head with one slice, for various reasons, the axe blade being to short so it was hard to hit with the perfect spot, or not enough force put in the swing. Guillotine blade is SOOOO heavy, there was no force problem, and it was large enough, guided by rails, so there was no way it miss, and the blade was angled so it could perfom the cut much easier.

while this could help, sharpening the blade would not necessarily fix the problem. the big issue with blades is that they work by separating matter, and if your blade is too thick it will just end of getting stuck or fail to cut through the object and, in their case, derail. Shadiversity has some great videos on the intricacies of medieval blades if you're interested in the topic.

If this was something I was working on I would personally redo the dropping mechanism If the blade slid in grooves in the beam instead of riding on casters you could aluminate the gap between the beam and the blade It would also allow you to bring the edges of the table platform closer to the blade so that things will cut instead of leveraging and snapping

You should add cross bracing supports along the entire track for the blade. That way the frame doesn't flex and the blade doesn't derail. It should also fit very tightly into the track, with as little horizontal play as possible. I suggest making the gap at the bottom narrower so it doesn't get stuck in there with whatever you're chopping. Also consider adding bracing or side guards to the table so stuff doesn't move around. Maybe you can make them out of acrylic so they don't block the view.
