Today I meet some real Heroes in Banda Neira, Indonesia. On my way to check out Fort Nassau, I saw this group of kids picking up trash. It turns out they are part of TarusJagaRumah, an environmentalist group that goes around and tries to clean up areas in Indonesia, specifically around Maluku. If you get a chance, check out their Instagram at TarusJagaRumah.
Before I ran into this group of kids, I checked out the home of exiled vice president Mohammad Hatta. In 1936, he was sent to Banda Neira by the Dutch as a political prisoner. He lived there for 6 years before being freed by the Japanese during the Japanese Occupation. After that, I go to Fort Belgica. Fort Belgica is a 17th-century fort in Banda Neira, Banda Islands, Maluku Islands, Indonesia; administratively in Central Maluku Regency, Maluku. The fort acted as a fortification system for the islands of Banda which during the period, was the only place in the world where nutmeg was produced. I then go and check out Fort Nassau, the fort that is infamous for the horrific executions that took place in 1921when 44 orang kayas were brutally executed by Coen.

Another coincidence, Japan has ruled Taiwan for 50 years since April 17, 1895. The difference is that the Japanese killed many local aborigines! I hope that the vice president's home can be transformed into a memorial hall with professional care by the government, and the cultural relics can be properly preserved! I also hope that the fort can repair the moldy place. It's sad to see the cannon being thrown on the ground. Fortunately, we have those heroes help to clear the garbage! But we have to ask sadly where did the garbage come from? It is very warm to hear you say historical stories, thank you very much for sharing! 👍😄👏

5:10 Interesting fact: Hatta promised not to marry until Indonesia became independent. So when he was exiled to Banda in his late 30s, he was not married. Hatta kept his promise, in which he only married after the proclamation of independence in 1945. To be precise, in November 1945 to a woman named Rachmi. Bung Karno who matched them at that time. They were 24 years apart in age when they married, Hatta was 43 years old and Rachmi was only 19 years old.

Add note: Hatta had relationship with a woman but have to ended because Hatta's promise not to marry until Indonesia became Independent. So the woman married with other man. So after 20 years something later and Indonesia declare the independent Hatta married with Rachmi, and Rachmi is the daughter of the woman he had relationship before.

During his lifetime, Bung Hatta wanted to own Bally shoes, a high-quality shoe brand in the 1950s. He even kept a clipping of the advertisement containing the address of the seller, quoted from the Kompas Daily, April 25, 2002. Because of the high price, Bung Hatta had to save money to be able to buy the shoes of his dreams.

Nick, I give you five stars for the video of The Real Indonesia HEROES. Your visit to Mr. Hatta's detention house made my eyes tear up. He is a great Hero of the Indonesian nation. I once visited his house ( museum ) in Bukuttinngi West Sumatera. The past was indeed dark for most of colonized nations, mass murders, robberies etc. But from all that, we just take a lesson and try not to repeat it. It all happened. God's destiny. Banda Neira is very attractive. I hope Indonesian government will develop it as a major tourist destination, especially for tourists from Europe to commemorate the history of their ancestors. Take care of yor safety and health Nick.

It was not All the VOC Nick and the VOC is not just the Dutch. Many schools are built by the Dutch all over Indonesia and leaders of Indonesia did study in the Netherlands. and it was the USA that forced to give up Indonesia not all workers where slaves and many had a good life. Maybe you should read the books of Russell Shorto a writer from the USA about Dutch history.

Fort Belgica was originally a fort built by the Portuguese in the 16th century on Naira Island, Maluku. Long after that, at the location of the Portuguese fort, a fort was rebuilt by the VOC on the orders of the Governor-General Pieter Both on September 4, 1611. The fort was later named Fort Belgica, so that at that time, there were two forts on Neira Island, namely; Fort Belgica and Fort Nassau. This fort was built with the aim of dealing with the resistance of the Banda people who opposed the monopoly of the nutmeg trade by the VOC.

I first came to Maluku in 1996 when I was young and thin. I went to Banda on a Pelni boat from Ambon. Fort Nassau was totally overgrown- nothing like Nick sees here, and the restoration of Belgica was not complete. It’s great to see how the restoration is going. It is also good that Nick is aware of what murderous arseholes the early Dutch under Coen were.

Yups, some Dutch VOC give some good legacy, like Medical&Hospital, Plantations&Garden Science (Bogor), Farm (Pasteurisation method for Milk in Bandung), astronomy (Telescope Boscha in Lembang-Bandung), and so on, but that was at the end of VoC's end time because they feel they owed so much to Dutch East Indiche aka Indonesia

I really think the Banda islands has so much value that Indonesia tourism should put more effort in revitalizing it and introduce it along the loop of tourist attractions in the country. Beautiful fort Belgica, still almost intact. Btw, don't try alcoholic drink from young people in Indonesia. They often mix it with something dangerous and lethal. Even for them.
