That looks Hard...

It is hard! I have to admit. It’s the diving left hand turn on a 5.3 degree PAPI to a very short runway, in a very large airplane. I think that it would be easier IRL, because, in VMC conditions, you could align the final a little further out, and you would be down to a steep final without the rollout at 100’ AGL!

Hi Father Time, nice work that....................When I fly my fsx MD-11 the PMDG one, so long as you are at the speed to lower flaps the speed automatically slows to the next flap setting during your approach.......Is this a querk of my sim and model or is this a feature of the real MD-11. Thought I'd as ask you have experience of the real thing. As far as your approach well done Captain, nice work. I am sure there is a KZbin video out there of a Lufthansa MD-11 landing at the same airport, but I am not sure if it is that same approach or not. Anyway, always great to see your videos, I have so many flights to try after watching your content, just need a week off work in order to get them all done. All the very best, hope you are well...............Dave.

Alway awesome to hear from you Dave! We always call out the flap speeds prior to lowering the next level of flaps. I honestly can’t remember whether or not the speeds for the next flaps were indicated on the PFD. You have forgotten more about the simulator than I have ever known! I still remember our early sim discussions from my initial days! Be well my friend. Jeff

Hi Captain Richard! What a fun video, thank you!:) I suppose this approach is comprable to the one into the old Kai Tak, huh? Same kind of a deal with a late and fairly dramatic last minute turn to final. I remember flapping around on that approach at PanAm level-D 737-NG sim in Vegas and after a couple of go arounds, I finally nailed it. It was pretty intense and fun:) Thank you, Jeff! I hope you and the Mrs. are both well!

@@Genia620 hi Eugene. It’s always so great to hear from you. I’ve played around with the Kai Tak approach in the sim. It’s so cool that MSFS recreated that airport for the sim world. Maybe I’ll do that today as my final flight in MSFS 2020! We’re doing great here. I hope that you and your family are well. Thanks again for always being there for me. Jeff

Thank you, Jeff! Trust me, I may not comment on every video of yours but I watch, like and appreciate them all!

Neat video! San Diego is for wimps, by comparison. Being DFW based, San Jose Costa Rica (SJO) was my biggest challenge 'down there' , windy in winter and rainy the rest of the time and a slanty runway. As you know, the MIA crews did most of the heavy lifting (TGU, etc). Quito in the real sim was enough for me.

I think that they used the Quito approach in the sim (At AAL) for a few years. I still think back to that instruction as I make these videos. The fly-by versus fly-over waypoints and the need to get that LNAV engaged after a missed in the mountains. It crosses my thoughts so often. You and I received some outstanding instruction. I miss the fact that you and I are no longer allowed to help, but it sure is fun to share this “non-golf” experience you.
