Thank you for this very informative and easy to understand explanation about the knee-related muscles! I started hiking and trail running and sometimes get sore around the large muscles, so for example, back of knee above my calf muscle which sounds like is the popliteus muscle? Is this more like a stabilizing muscle? I seem to get sore with secondary stabilizing muscles but I used to think they were tendons (and confused how tendons can get sore)! This explains a lot!

Which muscle, on the back of your knee, is responsible for holding your knee in place when walking? For example, I suffered several strokes in 2020 that affected my right side. Now when I walk, my knee has a "popping" action. I am having a hard time finding an exercise to strengthen this particular part of my knee.

Hi there, the condition for patients who suffer from stroke is slightly different. My approach is to train all muscles around the knee separately, and not just the one holding your knee in place. Start with activating all of them first before you increase the intensity (reason being, if you can't get it activated, let alone with weights. Compensation from other muscles could happen, which may make things worst.) Do consult someone from a medical/healthcare background and not a personal trainer (there are good ones who knows their stuffs of course). Take care!
