A small detail that people don’t see is that Lena’s dad is the last name on that memorial because he’s the last Alba to die on the battlefield.

This anime is actually a very real representation of reality. Wars are happening "some where else" being fought by "someone else" all the time. And we don't even know their names.

Something kinda cool here, the tail end of Theo's outburst that starts of this episode is the first time Lena hears any real names. Raiden and Theo call each other by their real names, Raiden tries to calm him down Theo snaps back. The 86 had been careful all this time to never use their real names while Lena is on the Para-Raid with them. Lena was probably a bit too distressed to register the names Theo and Raiden, but she almost certainly felt confused when these names came up while getting chewed out like that.

small interessting fact that many miss: when Lena is talking to Shin about the names you can see that the last name on the memorial for fallen soldiers is Lenas dad Vaclav

This episode is always one of the hardest for me to get through, but at the same time it’s one that’s so important because it sets the foundation for Lena’s character development for the rest of the season. And one thing to notice - Lena’s father is the last person to be memorialized in that military cemetery.

1:42 Once you go back and rewatch 86, looking for EVERY directorial effort to evoke meaning and feeling, you'll see genius imagery and metaphor all over! Like this second, you see Saint Magnolia(I think she was called...?) holding that massive sword over Theo's head. There are a couple of breakdown videos out there which go over these moments of brilliance, and i think this shot was seen as denoting the constant threat and pressure of the Albas' power of life-and-death that is always hanging just over the Coloratas' necks. Oh, dude, the subtle imagery in 86 is FANTASTIC.

Scary fact. Beyond general recon and jamming of both comms and sensors, the disposable flying legion robots can basically act as a loitering flax cloud. Ready to swarm inbound aircraft's intakes. So it wasn't necessarily even surface to air fire that took out their transport chopper, but probably robot bird strikes aimed at the engines.

Tbf with Lena, though it doesn't necessarily excuse that she didn't ask for their real names, the cat was originally introduced as just a cat so it was natural to ask for its name while she had callsigns for all of the 86, so she already had a way to address them even if she never asked for their names.

Ah I remember when I first caught your channel when you were watching dress up darling. "86" is gonna be a wild and extremely emotionally charged ride. Get your tissues ready cuz I fully shed many, many manly tears when I finished it. 86 for the best crew, Lena the best queen/commander, and Shin the best reaper/squad leader.

Karlstahl isn't a bad person necessarily. He's just a nihilist. I've seen a few reactors on this show think that Karlstahl or someone else is responsible for Vaclavs death. Nope, it's exactly as you see it and exactly as Karlstahl explains it to Lena. They were shot down by the Legion because Vaclav did something stupid.

I think that the Uncle was correct about her father being ignorant and cowardly. He might have been trying to be a good person, but I don't think he ever truly believed or enforced the ideals that he preached. Even if he had good intentions.

uncle jerome, is such a missunderstood character. he isnt a `bad/evil person` , he is a realist. he realises what they have done to the 86 is horrible and knows they ll never forgive them for it. he also knows he cant change anything for the better , because the alba have become accustomed to this `new`lifestyle and have also become racist , since it eventually prevents them from putting their own lives at stake.
