I can definately see why the Shoninki says that the path of the shinobi is horrifying. Only the strongest physically and mentally could do this job and hope to survive. Great podcast more please especially on the esoteric side

The more I look into your works the more connections I see with modern spies and not the super human warriors outside of normal society. This manipulation of people, for good or bad (ie. To work for you, or to work against the enemy) based on personality, desires, and rewards is also what I hear from many CIA types out there. The times have changed, the techniques not so much.

This was a pleasure to watch. I have a studied ALL of Steven's work and A.C.s work on Ninja for about 5 years straight.... literally. And truth be told, now that I know what a Ninja really was and their job; I would NOT want to be one nor; would I ever want one after me. Talking real medieval Ninja. All over the Bansen, all in the Shoninki, etc Iga and Koka book it states over n over n over again that a ninja has to be able to 'endure the un-endurable; and tolerate the in-tolerable. And as Steven said, as it is stated in the "Iga and Koka Ninja Skills book, "a shinobi cannot be out witted. But one Shinobi can destroy an army of 10 thousand. It's a Very dangerous job. It is like trying to penetrate a tong organization of Mexican drug cartel. If you are caught your dead in the most heinous of way......period! Btw a good movie to watch is "Sekigahara (2017). Its historical fiction but it's pretty good. I personally even like it better than SHOGUN. But Thanks for sharing this info guys.

What if a Lord just hired a local boy to feed him useful information on a regular basis? Or told a regular army soldier samurai to burn something down at night? The individual tasks any proper "shinobi" could do are things that could easily be done by any other low-skilled person. And in fact, the shinobi were ultimately used as soldiers and their combat skills proved to be no more effective than anyone else and so they were eventually unalived in battle like so many of their samurai counterparts of the Sengoku period.

The ninja are definitely more my speed than the samurai who turned out to just be terrorists I'm going to learn more about the Kusinoki Ninja their personality system sounds fascinating as someone also studying psychology in university right now and involved in the Sherlock Holmes Deductionists that could be a very interesting addition

Connklin: Kill Wombosi? We can do that anytime we want. I can send Nicky to do that, for Christ's sake. Mr. Wombosi was supposed to be dead three weeks ago. He was supposed to have died in a way where the only possible explanation was... that he'd been murdered by a member of his own entourage. I don't send you to kill. How come Nojiri never mentions Natori Ryu as part of the Kusunoki tradition? I find it kind of offensive to ignore the most prominent tradition in existence as of now, especially when it is the most prominent example of the grouping you are talking about.

@@AntonyCummins It's not about rights, it's about contextualizing your work, which is especially important for the uninitiated. It's almost a way of deliberately making his work aloof, inaccessible and abstract for people who aren't cued in. If I was making an explanatory video about Plato, it would be like making no reference to Aristotle at all which is ridiculous. I realize that's not the best analogy because everyone knows who Aristotle and Plato are, and because they both stand alone, but when it comes to esoteric stuff like shinobi, the context is needed for people who haven't been acquainted with this stuff. This is a criticism of Nojiri, not of you.

Nojiri said in his videos that it's partially because Natori ryu is a blend of Koshu ryu tactics and Kusunoki den teachings, so it sits into both camps, but I'm sure it's also because Natori ryu is under Antony as well

You don't see Machiavelli scholars not mention existing translations of Livy just because someone else did the translation. It's really amusing how the self-declared ninjutsu community doesn't understand how scholarship works. You cite the existing literature that contextualizes your research. Also, if it sits in both camps, that's not a reason to not cite it. You just qualify that "it sits in both camps". And officially, it is decidedly in the Kusunoki camp as the name is Shin-Kusunoki ryu, even if it (partially) derives from Kai.

@@dwl3006 You're somewhat answering your own question: Why doesn't Nojiri discuss Natori ryu if Natori ryu takes from the Kusunoki traditions??? Because he deals with the main Kusunoki traditions, and since Natori ryu takes from those, he too would be discussing them as well, even if it's indirect. If it was THAT much of an issue for both of them...they wouldn't have collaborated together on this video. Nojiri was citing documents that Antony's team translated, including some from Iga and Koka traditions, so it's a moot criticism.

Nojiri is one of those nerds who manages to make the ninja dry, boring and academic (even more than Antony ;). I can't watch more than about 5 minutes before I'm nodding off.

Nojiri is the kind of guy I could listen to for hours and hours and want more because he is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and can explain it in a clear and organized manner. It is so refreshing because so often when others discuss such things it feels like they are intentionally or unintentionally dumbing it down. No offense to anyone just saying I really enjoy Nojiri's approach to explaining the topic.
