My trusty iPhone 7 is dying - so I set off to find a replacement battery in the cell phone repair markets here in Shenzhen, China. And I learned quite a bit about replacement batteries in the process.

Short version:It's back! This time with all the right footage:) Long version: I uploaded this video yesterday, but had to remove it and reupload it today, because it was missing a bunch of footage of everything I was doing on my workbench. It's a long story, but I made a mistake when I rendered out the final video, which I didn't catch until some of you guys with sharp eyes noticed I was looking up at an overhead camera but that you weren't seeing any footage from it, and mentioned it in the comments. So thank you for the heads up! It's fixed now, and I watched through the whole thing to make sure this version is what we intended you to see. Thanks for your patience, and sorry if you were in the middle of watching when I took it down yesterday, or got a notification and then couldn't watch it. I just really wanted to make sure you could see the full version we worked so hard on.

@@jshaw4757 I believe that the battery tester is made by one of the battery assemblers/manufactures/suppliers. Guess what such a thing would do when it detects a battery that it detects as its own brand. Also note that even at the best of times, the battery tester has to believe the battery monitor on/in the battery. If the battery monitor in the battery is faked/hacked, then it can report any fantasy value and this tester can not disprove it without at least one power cycle.

I actually used an iFixit kit recently to replace a battery in my MacBook Pro. It's one of those with the glued in battery. Took about an hour to do it, but it wasn't difficult. In the kit iFixit included an adhesive remover (some solvent in a bottle) and it made quick work of the glue. The battery they provided has been great, works just as good as the original Apple one did before it degraded. This was the first time I'd bought any parts from them and I was pleasantly surprised. I'll probably do more stuff myself in future.

Their Pro Tech Toolkit is totally overpriced, as you can find most of the tools at the same or greater quality elsewhere, however I ended up purchasing it anyways, knowing it would definitely be of good quality, plus it was all packaged nicely together, and I have to say, the extra $30 or so was worth it in my opinion. I really like the quality of products iFixit puts out and their work to make everything easy and well documented.

Love the process being shown to understand the battery’s life cycle a lot better! I would highly recommend that if you’re taking off the battery from the devices that you pull the strips to the left and right side, respectively. You’ll notice the bottom black bar of the battery is what causes tension for the strips to break. When you pull to the sides and use that same spaghetti method to pull, then you won’t need to cause any unintended damage to parts, PSA, or cowlings! Love learning from your channel!

Something I would have liked to know would have been how the tester reported your phone's battery when compared with what the Battery Health item of the settings app of the phone before removing it (i.e. the percentage 'maximum capacity'). Conversely, I'd like to know if the new battery was reporting as 100%. Just small points, but I'd have been interested.

As someone who works in a cellphone repair shop and replaces batteries every single day, I see no reason to remove the taptic engine. It's saves me maybe a minute or 2 and that's only if the pull tabs break. If they don't break, I can have a battery repair done in about 3 minutes flat.
@TheTimader
@TheTimader 4 жыл бұрын
Another pro tip. Keep the phone laying flat on its back on the table while pulling the tabs. If the tabs break douse that phone in isopropyl alcohol, and then just pluck that battery right out. Also these things don't explode. The worst that can happen is that you really stab the crab out of it and it spurts flames for about a second, you say "oh shit!" and throw it on the kitchen floor.

the adhesive is easier to get out if you carefully use a plastic ifixit spudger to wrap the adhesive around it once before pulling at a low angle. also try removing the taptic engine first. if all else fails, disconnect the battery from the board and soak around the battery with isopropyl, then scoop under it with a plastic card, no heat needed.

This was fun to watch! I worked in phone repair for about 4 years and batteries were always a big struggle to source. In this ex-repair tech's opinion after replacing thousands of batteries, here's my rule of thumb: Only get the absolute best you can find. Everything else is a waste of your time and money. Aftermarket batteries have two main points of failure: aftermarket gas gauges and aftermarket cells. The cells can be of varying quality when not original and so their performance may be inconsistent. But the gas gauges is where it really falls apart. The OEM batteries Apple uses have electronics made by Texas instruments and they are very high quality. They manage all sorts of stuff from how fast is the battery allowed to charge based on its cells temperature, to what its current charge state is, and even relaying to the phones SOC what it's health is to know how much power can be drawn reliably at any given time. Aftermarket electronics likely do not do this or "fake" various statistics and as such you see things like inflated batteries or short life prematurely. If you want, it can be a fun experiment to remove the tape covering the electronics on the battery and examine them under a microscope to see who's truly original and who's a copy. I cannot emphasize how important those electronics are for longevity and consistent performance of batteries. Lastly, what I saw time and time again from all sorts of vendors (domestic and international) was that on phones more than one generation old a sizeable amount of batteries were pulled from old phones, had their manufacture dates scrubbed, and their gas gauge smart stats reset.

Cool field trip - every time I watch one of these "going to the market" videos, I'm super happy I can watch these from home - I admire Scotty learning the language, braving the haggling and lies at every interaction, but I have zero interest in ever doing this myself. Two things Scotty said he wanted to know at the beginning of the video: 1. How do I know if a battery is any good? 2. How do I know if it's genuine. The answer to both those questions is not something Scotty will ever be able to find out in Shenzhen - and I think in the end, when he recommended the iFixit battery, that was he was trying to say. Unfortunately a test of a battery with a single data point is not going to tell you anything that will compare the batteries. Without some full charge discharge cycles under a load that simulates the phone being connected, it also doesn't tell you anything about the cell's performance or longevity. Moreover, not even a battery test will tell you if you bought a substandard battery that is going to explode on you one day because its a piece of garbage. This last point is something I would especially warn people looking at batteries that are the same size but have a substantially higher advertised capacity. I do agree - buy from a reputable seller, who has some skin in the game if the battery dies prematurely, melts your phone or starts your house on fire. Apple or iFixit are companies who you could go after and hold liable and carry a real warranty, and thus even if their products might not be any better, your total investment will probably be less. A weird store on AliExpress doesn't give you that security. (Also consider you may have to replace a knock off battery more often, and the wear and tear and risk of opening these stupid phone and destroying them is high for the layperson. ) Finally - the black hole of time spent hunting down a battery on AliExpress, praying it will arrive, hoping it isn't DOA, trying to get a refund, or worse having to send it back - even if you are saving $10 initially - it isn't worth it, especially when you consider you spent $1000 on the stupid phone in the first place.

Your battery tests are flawed, as you depend on whatever is flashed onto the battery management IC inside the battery. You probably just purchased a scammer's tool of choice which allows you to reset the battery count or write whatever you want, when you connect it to the PC I would guess you can even write whatever capacity you want which won't be corrected by that IC until you will take measurements during full charge/discharge cycle. So to do it correctly you probably have to let it fully charge and then discharge few times and then see what the discharge capacity is. You can do that pretty much with a much cheaper tools like some of the universal Li-xx chargers for RC models(imax b6) or those 18650 cell liitokala chargers but then you need to make some kind of adapter.

He mentioned that you could overwrite IC values on the battery in the video when he first plugged a battery in the tester around the 8:30 mark. So he was kind of letting the viewers know buying batteries like this was at their own risk since you could make an aging battery seem brand new.
