It's a lot like the backlash of Marie Kondo saying she's a bit more relaxed now that she's had a 3rd kid. Folks want a set of rules to follow, clear cut, so they don't have to think too hard about it. Your website and now video content has helped me tremendously to understand what "style lines" even means, not to mention combining in it all. I created pinterest boards for me and for my sisters based pretty solely on your and the concept wardrobes explanations. Thank you for what you do.

I appreciate that comparison. My favorite gift from Marie Kondo was the application of Shintoism to our ownership of our things so I never interpreted her guidance as "rules" but rather a philosophy that inspires me to set some of my belongings free. Likewise, I appreciate this video because it helps cross-pollinate, so to speak, all the factors that affect style: town, age, occupation, bones, flesh, personality, etc.

I one hundred per cent agree with Mandy, and I really can't say what she said any better. I was really lost trying to figure out my Kibbe/Kitchener types until I came across your videos. And yes, people understand things differently, but maybe that's why I found your videos more helpful than some other people. I personally have often thought that you were better at explaining the concepts than the masters/creators themselves. On a different note, I still cannot for the life of me figure out my colour season and am starting to feel a bit sceptical about its effectiveness/accuracy. I think it might be too restrictive.

People come to me for my advice. They don’t have to follow it. I watch a lot of Kibbe/Kitchner/Color Analysis videos and yours are the most respectful, inclusive, fun and helpful of them all. If anything, my constructive criticism is that you have too many disclaimers and are too cautious in explaining your ethos, even though your analytical reasoning and holistic intentions are already very transparent. speak your truth, you're not responsible for others' discomfort or misinterpretations. The more you acknowledge, respond and internalize backlash, the more that backlash threatens to poison the quality of your content.

You don't need to apologize! I think your analytic approach to Kibbe's system is, honestly, much more workable and helpful than Kibbe's mystical, magical approach that shifts and changes with the wind and leaves people scratching their heads about what they can actually wear for year after frustrating year. A system is only as good as it is accessible and you are making it accessible. If anyone has the funds to travel to New York and see Kibbe himself by all means do so, but for those of us who don't have that option and just want some solid guideance on how to put our self-determined Kibbe ID's and essences together to create outfits your videos are a great help! Fantastic, really! I'm impressed at how you are taking the concepts I've been studying for what feels like forever now and turning them into outfits.

Your insights and opinions are wonderful to hear. Like you, I was attracted to gamine style but lost interest in style for a long time because I was buying things that didn’t make me feel good when I wore them. I believe I have classic, dramatic and romantic essences so gamine pieces clashed with these “more mature” essences. I now find ways to incorporate whimsical but still classic elements into my outfits which still fulfills that attraction to playfulness and I know what pieces to buy (turtle necks are the best!) to make me feel comfortable and more like myself. Body type: 5’7, curvy with sharper bones (possibly SD) Essence blend: classic, dramatic, and romantic Color pallet: soft summer pallet is best, but can shift into soft autumn as well

Your explanation of Kibbe is the best I've ever seen. I did not get it until I watched your videos. Edit: In fact, your explanation of Kibbe set me free. I had been trying to do what all short and rounded, curvy women are told to do, wear elongating long lines, don't show your ankles because it emphasizes your shortness, and wear lots of black and dark colors. lol Then I found Kibbe and wasn't getting it until I watched your videos. I was trying to turn a Romantic body into a Dramatic or Classic body. Does not work, trust me. Then you explained that my Romantic body was a thing! I don't have to try and change my body to look anything else but short, narrow shoulders, rounded edges with my hourglass figure and "fleshiness.". And the color recommendations from Kibbe were also freeing, along with the recommendation to sparkle. I am transforming my look into something that I love and something that really reflect me instead of trying to be something I'm not. I am wearing less black, more navy, more white and oyster, pale pink, and I always have a patent-leatther item or some dainty, sparkling jewelry on. Swapped my double-breasted tan trench for a single-breasted shiny oyster colored one and the effect is remarkable. I will be forever thankful for your Kibbe videos, even the ones in which you were overfitting.

Your videos have so much clarity and I’ve loved how you incorporate Kitchener’s Essences. This made so much sense (especially percentages) and I’ve just done a deep dive into my wardrobe and discovered exactly where I’ve been going wrong. I’ve always had a good sense of what my style is, but looking back at images I can see some of the tweaks I could have made. After all that said, please don’t beat yourself up about “doing a disservice “. You clearly state when it’s your opinion and I love that you tell people not to box themselves in. That makes you wise beyond your years in my eyes and I’ll definitely be tuning in again and again and using what I’ve learned when styling clients. A huge thanks to you 🤍

Wow, what a wonderfully thorough video. Your videos especially on essences have been really helpful. I'm having a lifestyle change and my wardrobe is at a crossroads and it's really tricky finding out my new uniform. I don't really have a profession but my current clothes are fairly smart and creative from my art gallery days (I am also lacking basics). But my current style is sitting around feminine, trustworthy and earthy. I like the earthier styles from cottage core, some preppy, motherly vibe a bit soft but also structured. I love midi skirts! I would like versatile outfits that are good for chasing a toddler, tending sheep, church and brunches. I am likely TR with Classic Essence, then Natural and a smidge ethereal (like make up, jewellery). I am also a soft autumn with long hair. I think naturally Kibbe stuff comes with some confusion to everyone who hasn't read him directly. But these videos are still very helpful for collating ideas and getting practical inspiration.

Actually, your (extremely thorough and wonderful) essence videos combined with your videos on "how to dress your body type" and proportions helped me realize I didn't really NEED Kibbe. I know it's everyone's tool du jour, but you can get pretty far identifying which parts of your body you want to highlight and applying your essences and preferences there. Kibbe does provide an easy shortcut to talking about our bodies, but it's not the end all be all. Once I figured out I wanted to highlight the narrowness and vertical and de-emphasize my bust on my 5'5 frame, I stopped caring about Kibbe altogether. All this to say, it will probably do all of us some good to apply some subjectivity to our bodies instead of obsessively trying to fit into boxes. And knowing what you know about design, you're equipped to teach folks how to highlight their best/fav features just fine without anybody's framework. You got this ;-)
@robinthomas4083 Жыл бұрын
Additionally (b/c I 'm still thinking about this), transitioning toward a non-Kibbe language for bodies is probably good for you as a stylist/creator anyway. Not saying you make up your own "system," but applying your more contemporary lens (appearing on Project Runway in 2015 >>>>>>>> writing a book in the 1980s) to dressing the bodies we have would be a refreshing alternative for people frustrated/confused by Kibbe.

It blows my mind that there is so much to learn about. No, not everyone has to or should adhere to any system but knowing certain things may allow you to reach an A ha moment about why do you gravitate towards something, and encourage you to lean into something that you might not have considered, i.e a style of dress etc. Please never stop, cause as Taylor Swift put it so succinctly: hater gonna hate hate hate (:. I would LOVE to see deep dives on the 12 seasonal color analysis like you did for Kitchener. It would be cool to see Kibbe body and Kitchener essence examples in the colors for each season. Because I can’t help but feel some colors invoke more of one essence than another does. For instance I’m finding it very difficult to find examples for SA ingenue or SA Dramatic if that makes sense. I feel like colors themselves throw off vibes that we instinctively associate with certain essences. Like I see a lot more Natural essence clothing for SA then any other essence. And more dramatic and classic essence for the winters. Just a thought. I would love to hear your interpretation of it all, especially since your blog posts on the 12 seasons are very informative.

But I have to say that your videos have given me so much clarity and information on this crazy Kibbe subject. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us. I watch other Kibbe content creators and to the best of my knowledge they, like you, have mentioned not to get caught up in the minute details of a given body part when trying to determine Kibbe body ID. Kibbe himself, from what I’ve read, changes his own parameters. So to sum this up, remember that you can’t please everyone all of the time. I want to say that your series helped me so much as a very dysmorphophobic ed survivor. I am very passionate about fashion and love to help my friends with moodboards, or to pick up "the" clothing item that will make them shine, but I myself have been wearing oversised basics for years because of crippling anxieties when it comes to dressing myself. I have been babystepping towards building myself a new wardrobe for a few years now, and only recently did I dare to buy some items that feel a bit more like myself. It sure is a journey but your passion, intelligence and kindness have been really helpful since the beginnings of your channel. (Just in case, I'm a dark automn SC with classic, natural and ingenue essence. I am a full-time writer and artist + I renovate an old appartment. I am going 30 but look 20, which can make it hard to feel both internally and externally age appropriate. I gravitate towards timeless, softly academic/artistic looks - something along the lines of the dark academia silhouette but more fluid and less codified in the palette, with possibly some patterns and rock'n'roll, contemporary dance or equestrian vibes (I do ride). I like 70's and mediterranean influences too. To sum it up I like something that incorporates a bit of looseness but feels clean, with a gently androgynous/classic/art-critic feels. I am also learning to make an outfit look more elevated/polished.)

(my weight is in flux) My best guess - using your tools - is that I am a true summer color pallete and kibbe romantic (or possible theatrical romantic/soft gamine) with the following essences: Classic 33%, Gamine 23%, Ingenue 18%, Natural 16%, Romantic 7% - hopefully I'll be able to narrow this information down but it's already clicking as to why certain things have felt "not right" and other items feel so good. I'm training my eye and upgrading my wardrobe to match a recent promotion alongwith my uphill journey towards being my truest and bestest self! Thanks for all that you do, Gabrielle! I would love to see more content around my particular combinations in the future!!!!!

This series is so helpful, please keep making it. I struggle to be creative with looks and end up wearing a variation of the same look again and again. My issue at the moment is I've just changed jobs from a relaxed outdoors based job to an office based job at a University. It's quite cold at the moment and I'm tending to wear black skinny jeans, black boots, a black jumper, black coat and black bag with a colourful top but I want to use more colour and less black in my wardrobe. I'm a bright spring and kibbe theatrical romantic and I have ingenue, romantic and classic essence. I'd like to be seen as intelligent, approachable and feminine but I tend to be seen as young and sweet. My only non negotiable is no trainers or high heels. I'm also not a big fan of wearing jewellery; a small silver necklace is about as much as I wear. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Xx

I am a kibbe soft natural with Natural, Ingenue and romantic essence. My colour season is soft summer. I love effortless and simple outfits with an edge (Like Kate Moss's outfits for example). Since I am a high school junior the outfits should be age- and school apropriate. Thank you for this is series, it is very helpful!

I recently discovered your channel and binged-watched your videos, and for what is worth I never thought you were trying to overfit the systems, at least deliberately, all the advice you give comes from a place of trying to help others with their style, and sometimes to do that one has to make the abstract more concrete, and it's very obvious you have huge respect for these systems, so don't be too hard on yourself! I think your content is really informative, creative and also fun (your editing must take so much effort, but it is definitely appreciated!), and because you have such great sense of style (not just for your own ID and personal expression, but also for eg., when you showcase other IDs on yourself, it's spot on and so well put together that to me every outfit looks amazing, regardless of typing) and most importantly you have so much fun with fashion that it really inspired me to have fun with fashion expression as well, and find my own styles that make me feel great. Anyway, that was a long-winded way to say I really like your content, and appreciate your thoughtfulness and imagination--keep rocking! :)

I really really appreciate your side comment/troubleshooting. I've been following your videos with interest, learned a lot, and I can tell you're passionate about developing these concepts into modern culture and helping people apply them for themselves. When one shows that the matter itself is more important than the ego (being right, for example), it shows a lot of maturity and that your heart is in the right place. While I didn't personally notice there were specific ways you might have skewed the information, I think your desire to improve the application of--let's admit it--quite complex ideas and concepts, reinforces my respect and interest in following your channel on this topic. It might be a bit of time until I get to see another video from you about Kibbe (honestly probably the system I understand the least well so far), but I'm looking forward to it already.

I don’t know about everyone else but your channel is like a safe little island of practical style information for me. Where I don’t have to be pushed into a tall hourglass box if I am really short and soft. I was typed as 50% romantic, 20% natural, 20% youthful, 10% classic. My color selections were 60% lively bright, 30% striking contrast, 10% earthy rich. No oranges, bright white, or cool purples for me. I love color and print, especially folk style prints, but don’t want prints that are aging. I live in a really hot climate and work outside a lot but still have to wear business casual, no shoulders or knees exposed, (collar or blouse no tee shirts.) I want my look to be fun, feminine, and relaxed.

i adore these videos so much i find myself rewatching these a few times just for daily inspiration! my parameters are Soft Classic, dark winter with romantic and natural essence. my hardest part in getting dressed is dressing for cold and wet weather while still keeping the clean silhouette i need as a soft classic :/ i feel like i’m always having to ignore my personal “experimental punk meets dark bohemian” style for the sake of being weather appropriate and therefore comfortable. im non-kibbe petite and have major “resting nice face” so my goal is also to look a little off putting lol

Some unsolicited advice from another SC - i got a wool undershirt (from Icebreaker) at the start of the year and it's life-changing. It was a splurge but it's completely changed what I can wear because it is SO warm. Same goes for fleece-lined tights/leggings (or wool ones). You don't need thick/bulky clothes in cold weather, just warmer fibers.

I'm looking forward for the next videos! Especially 😅 with my combo advice. Meanwhile, I will go and work on the mood boards... hopefully it will help me with the overfitting I'm dealing with: knowing all the types and archetypes and seasons and not only not getting the line but also collapsing on that 9th order equation I'm trying to solve each time in my head, while trying to think of my style. No, it wasn't you who confused me, I was already deeply confused when I found you. Your videos help me make sense out all this, specifically by examples of blending it all together into beautiful, functional and appropriate outsits. Xoxo! You're the best!

Girl, this series is *chefs kiss! If you ever decide to another vid, I'm a Kibbe romantic, Kitchener ingenue / romantic with a slight touch of ethereal, a soft autumn, and my main words are: distinguished, bright, and iconic. I admire the hell out of Marilyn Monroe, and I absolutely need an everyday outfit that matches my style and possibly a cute, sexy going-out outfit if possible. I'm an entrepreneur and author in the making, so nothing too fancy, but I do like being known for what I do, and I want that represented in my personal style as well. My style priorities are also comfort, easy to throw in the wash, and honours my body in a flattering way. (I'm bordering on plus-size but trying to lose weight.) Seriously though, thank you for everything you do. You rock, Gabrielle! (Also I'm genderfluid, use they / them pronouns and dislike anything too feminine.) Love the boho style and I'm inspired by Lily James from Mamma Mia 2 lol, and I'd love to send you my style map too :)

All your videos helped me get out of my comfort zone, try out new things, discover my essences that truly surprised me and got my spark back. For years I was lost and anxious and stubborn about fashion. I felt it was a stupid thing and clothes were just clothes. Well…… they are not! It’s incredible how seeing from one day to another and with each outfit how confident I became because I trust myself enough to actually create an outfit and not just put some clothes on. I have struggled with style all my life, I love almost everything so that in itself is an overwhelming problem. Supposedly , I’m a natural classic with romantic & gamine….. sounds like a prescription for psychosis Knowing that however makes me feel somewhat better. Gives me an excuse to validate some odd outfits I’ve worn. I’m short , bottom heavy and old , just to make it harder of course. I doubt I’ll ever have a true personal style but maybe being natural classic is just the excuse I need. I wish I could afford a stylist to help , in the meantime I’ll jump into my flowy floral gown , put my hair up in a loose bun and carry on. Thank you for what you do, it’s very appreciated.

Hi, I'm a cool winter, natural essence with classic and romantic. I love the neutral colors and polished look of classic style, but find it a challenge to look polished, especially since I prefer relaxed and comfort. I love jeans plus a tee shirt, or a soft knit. I love interesting details, like a bright pop of color, a bit of lace, or texture, maybe something slightly edgy.Nothing too formal or complicated. I only wear flats, no heels. I would like to have an outfit that can look polished and feminine but be easy to wear since I work from home. And if it can work for zoom meetings and running errands. My style board was " soft, polished, feminine, fresh, interesting details." My biggest challenge is looking pulled together and polished, but still make it easy. Thank you! Your videos are so helpful and I just completed the closet clean out. ❤

Hi Gabrielle ! Thanks for another fantastic video. Here's my suggestion for the next episode: - Kibbe ID: Dramatic Classic - Style Essence(s): 71% Classic 23% Natural 6% Dramatic - Colour season: True Summer (cool and extra muted) - Adjectives: harmonious/put together; approachable/relaxed; sophisticated/poised. - Lifestyle: casual office work during the week; brunch, thrifting and antiquing on the weekend; occasional sophisticated dates; Netflix & chill with the cats - Moodboard/inspo: Monica Geller in Friends; off-duty royal/Princess Diana; 90s and early 00s romcoms (including Carrie Bradshaw); streetstyle (SJP, Jennifer Aniston, Vanessa Hudgens); mountains in the summer; 80s youthfulness; boho-chic; ecclectic and hygge home; NYC in autumn; French Parisian mum on the weekend, DENIM!! Hope that helps! xx

Gabrielle, all of your videos have been SO helpful. Your channel is extremely informative and I haven't seen anything like this anywhere else on KZbin! I have learned a lot about my style with your videos so thank you for all your work! My style parameters: flamboyant gamine, deep winter. Essences are gamine, dramatic and maybe a bit of classic? When I think about how I want to appear, I think creative, unique, quirky, confident, but also put-together. But apparently, my style vision board ended up having a lot of Parisian inspo as well. I'm struggling with my casual outfits - most of my wardrobe is basic pieces and I feel like I usually look boring and unoriginal. I'm a musician and I also need stage outfits, and I have a hard time making outfits that are interesting, sort of attention grabbing, but also not too revealing and that feel like 'me'. Wardrobe non-negotiables are: comfort, durability. Thank you

This was so helpful! Here are my parameters. I am a slim soft dramatic, I am not very busty but I am quite curvy at my glutes/hips. I have strong ingénue essence followed by ethereal then romantic essences. I’m mixed race and a soft summer. Currently I only wear black and white and very occasionally wear colour. However I realised too much black looks too harsh on me. I practically dress like Wednesday Addams, I even have the same haircut 😂 I have a disability so I find comfort important and cannot wear flat shoes. platforms and doc martens are the best for me. I want to be able to blend my essences, Kibbe and colour season cohesively as that is what I have been struggling with. I enjoy the cottagecore, Korean, feminine and gothic/dark romantic aesthetics. I recently graduated uni and just want some nice everyday outfits to walk the dog or see friends and evening outfits. I love wearing dresses and I love wearing blouses and shirts. I also am allergic to the cold and live in London, so I also need help with cold weather options because I usually look like the michelin man in winter.

I love your content, and gosh I have a lot of feelings about your thoughts at the end. I understand and appreciate that Kibbe’s body typing system is David Kibbe’s intellectual property and at the end of the day only he is an authority on it. On the other hand, there is a lot of gatekeeping within the Kibbe community (including the SK group) and ultimately it is about peoples’ own bodies. It shouldn’t be difficult to access. That’s problematic. As an entry point, for me personally, learning about it from an inclusive perspective, a fellow mom and from someone who attempts to make it more accessible is just much more useful and interesting to me. I do still appreciate what you are saying in terms of taking a step back and I’m excited to see your new content! I really hope you leave up the work you’ve already done because it has been so helpful for me. In terms of the overfitting, I feel that. Having grown up in the 90s, there were a lot of negative elements of the way the fashion industry impacted our lives but I really miss the glossies. There were only so many pages and so many trends and a handful of takes on them. It was so simple! Now the amount of fashion information at our fingertips is truly overwhelming. As a woman who is privileged enough to be able to choose what I buy most of the time, I try to stick to a few content creators that I feel provide a good intellectual and aesthetic compass but respect their viewers’ individuality as well. Thanks for being one of them!! Sorry for the essay. You rock! Thanks for your work 🎉

Hi, can you tell me what glossies means?

Thank you so much! I agree there is a lot of gatekeeping, and I think there might be a better way for Kibbe himself to funnel new clients outside the SK group alone. But I just want to make sure I'm respecting him and his system with my message. I think it can ultimately be a really great style tool. And totally agree with growing up in the 90's- the fashion stimuli continues to explode, it can be daunting. I'm honored to be one of those creators, tahnk you!

Thank you for your content! I am analytical too and you have been able to say everything in a way that makes so much more sense to me. Thank you! Your videos where you go over essences and pulling it all together and the style map are my favorite. Finding these systems have let me spend money on clothes better because I’m not just buying whatever I am attracted to at random, but am understanding what looks good on me and WHY. So many times I have had a top or an outfit and I’m like oh this is great but then when I try to reproduce the vibe or get a piece of clothing that is something similar I realize I didn’t know why it worked and it’s hard to get lucky twice. I’ve also been able to see my body better past my own insecurities and dysmorphia. Now I feel like I know why an outfit works and if I will like an article of clothing and can confidently invest in higher quality clothes and more environmental ethical brands as I fill in wardrobe gaps without just having to hope I get lucky with the picks. Please do more style map and creating outfits that incorporate those elements! Also a request- more about ways to make the more yin IDs professional and business casual looks. I am a 8th grade math teacher and a mom of toddlers but a soft dramatic and it’s hard to walk that line between confident but not too sexy, and modest but not frumpy. And I can’t walk it in heels because I am on my feet and going ALL DAY lol.

This is my favorite series of yours and I love how thoughtful you are both in taking into consideration all of the commenter's style parameters and needs as well as the section in the end responding to criticism!! You're so clearly passionate about what you do. I'm a soft gamine and I'm uncertain of my essences but I think it's some blend of ethereal, classic, and maybe a little bit of natural. I'm a deep winter. My personal style inspiration veers toward the moody, sultry, and dramatic, and my style map would involve Morticia Addams, Old Hollywood femme fatale, 70s rock glam, 60s Parisian girl, and a touch of cyperpunk or military-inspired. I have yet to feel like I understand how to dress within soft gamine lines and also incorporate my essences/personal style. In general, I'd like to look cool and unique, in flattering clothes, especially as I often feel like while I really liked the outfit I styled, it looks off on *me*. Some outfits that are office appropriate but not boring would be appreciated (I'm so tired of business casual!!!), and I live in a cold city with snowy winters, if that helps.
