Beautiful cars! Back in 1965 a radio was an extra in almost all cars... And a British cars was British, a German car German, a French car French and so on. Cars had real character which was closely linked to the country and culture of their origin. They did not all look like Audi's, which was nowhere in those days...

Superbly informative feature, as always, Ian! I just love spending hours mooching at the BMM’s Gaydon hangars... When I eventually fix the issue with my lovely old (2004) S-Type 3-litre SE’s propensity for serving up sporadic helpings of limp-dick mode, I’ll give you a shout, and see if I can talk you into making a short video of a ‘modern’ 6-cylinder ‘S’... Very refined - for a Ford(!) - even if it isn’t quite as ballsy as the 4.2 V8 in your previously-featured footage!

For my father's funeral last month, we asked the funeral directors specifically for their Daimler DS420 limousine and hearse, as it had been a family tradition of my father's that these beautiful cars were used. I believe the funeral directors had a pair of the last DS420's to be made from the early 90s, and it is hard to believe the XK engine powering those DS420's had been in production since the late 1940s by the time they ended production in 1992. I suspect the car you will show us would be the final DS420 limousine, from 1992, reg L420YAC which is kept at the Museum. I love travelling in those DS420 limousines, they are such classic, beautiful cars, and the sound of that Jag you drove was just like the feeling I always get from travelling in a Daimler DS420. Sadly the newest ones of these are now virtually 30 years old, and I suspect fewer and fewer funeral directors will be keeping them on their fleets as they age further. As far as I am concerned, they are THE car I associate with funerals, and nothing else compares. Timeless classics.

My dad had several Daimler 4.2’s and as 19/20 year old he would get me to drive them drop off/pick up him & mum from Luton airport when they went off to Spain on holiday several times per year, two weeks of bliss, how me & my mates are still alive baffles me 40 years later, however girlfriends were always keen to try out the comfortable leather back seats!

As a small noy, my Dad had a 1965 Daimler version of the MkII - with a very rare factory M/OD gearbox. It was a deep maroon colour with grey leather and always smelled lovely inside. I used to want the weather to rain when we went out just so I could see its wipers in action. Their 'little dance' as you called it, was magic to a 5-year-old me - I'd never seen any others like it....and it was a toss-up as to whether these or the pantograph wipers on my Granddad's Holden ute were my favourites. That XK engine sure sounds magical when you give it the berries, doesn't it? Beautiful cars...... Many thanks for getting the permission to show us such a lovely example, Ian. My father had Mk 2 Jaguars throughout my teens. When I was18, he bought a news 1966 3.4 manual with overdrive and I was allowed to drive it. We lived in Germany and there were no speed limits on most of the country roads. The best I got to was between 205 and 210 kmh indicated. There was no twitchiness at any speed. Rock solid road handling and I felt completely safe. Never any feeling that I might be pushing it a bit. The rear axle was easily controlled. One thing I remember from the owner's manual was the advice to take the car out onto an open road, autobahn's were good for this, and drive in top gear at 5,000 rpm or above for an hour. It cleaned out the pipes.Brilliant excuse for a fang 😁😁

Had a S type way back then with a one reg red and wire wheels Drove it around for a couple of years and then gave it to my wife who went on to drive it for another two years. Sold it because it became to expensive to run or so I thought I didn't realize then how comfy they were till I sold it. SHEER CLASS Looked after they were wonderful cars and i wish i had it now.

Many Moons ago, when still at Primary School. I had Toddled from school to the Local model Shop. (To spend my Pocket money. Hiden in my sock all day, From the Bullies.) Whilst purchasing my Airfix kit the 'Heavens Opened.' And the owner of the Shop, Kindly offered me a Ride home in his Jaguar. ( He lived in the Posh End of my Street.) I can still recall the Luxury of Leather, Wood & Utter Comfort. ( my Dad Owned a mini at the time.) So the Opulence was Stunning to this kid, clutching his Airfix kit in Shorts. I Can still recall that smell. Dad wasn't too pleased when I suggested "He Should Buy one..!" 😠 I Never Spoke of it Again in fact...!! But Thx for the Memory at 65 yrs old. My parents bought a 1965 3.8S manual with overdrive in 1968 here in Sydney, Australia. As a 9 year old I loved the sound, the speed and the sumptuousness as we regularly travelled the 5 hours to Batemans Bay on the South coast of New South Wales. It got about 16mpg. It was traded-in in 1973 on a Renault 16TS which was a different story but not regretted in the newly oil supply-aware times.

My father bought new Jaguars during that period, progressing from the Mark 2 to the S-Type and then on to the E-Type and finally the XJ6. The one thing I remember about the S-Type, although being very young at the time, was that it had two fuel tanks; it didn't take long to work out why, it had a voracious thirst and you could literally watch the first fuel tank being drained as you drove along.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a 420. I don't think I have ever seen one. My dad had a 420G when I was 6. It seemed enormous to me as a small child sliding around on the enormous leather back seat. I would love to own a 420G now but my excuse is that I never see one with electric windows like my dad's one.

In 1974 my dad bought a 4.2litre British Racing Green Jaguar 420 G. The "G" stands for GRAND. A truly awesome car and one I will never forget because it made me into a lifelong Jaguar fan. Great video, love the S Type's of old and I had two V6 S Type's. I had a 1999 3.0L V6 and also a 2003 3.0L V6. I have had about nine Jaguar's and still own a completely rotten 1975 XJ6 awaiting restoration. It may happen it may not? Keep up the good work young man!

I can recall a warm summers day in 1965 in Welshpool near the Shropshire border. A Sunday ...all the pubs were closed. We were visiting relatives. This time we were visiting my Father's Uncle. He had just bought a bronze S Type. We preferred his E Type. My Dad had just bought a 1963 Mk2 3.4 for a £1000. The sun was warm...the ancient countryside green and peaceful....the cars were all leather and walnut and cruised at 110mph. Heaven.

Absolutely magnificent Ian! I absolutely love the colour of this S-Type, its history, and the interior, phenomenal! All those bank of switches harking of the E-Type, yet distinctly a Jaguar saloon (sedan). I knew of one individual I knew who had a white Jaguar similar to this, not sure it was an S-Type, but a classic nonetheless. Quite an enormous boot! And kudos to the museum for allowing to drive and video this magnificent Jaguar classic, well done! It is also heartening to here that they are making many of the museum vehicles road worthy; as you stated, vehicles were meant to be driven, and driven they should be, albeit not thrashed about within an inch of their life. It also does not surprise me that this S-Type keeping up with modern traffic, they seemed to be well, if not over, engineered at the time of manufacture, and mind you this is a 1965 model!
