Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure stealth game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 4. Players assume the role of Jin Sakai, one of the last samurai on Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274. The game has no waypoints and has no clear guidance, it is meant to be played your own way.

This is the exact same thing I said when I saw the state of play! Although technically speaking Jin's Lord is his uncle and if his uncle says it's dishonourable then it is for Jin specifically as honour is dependent on what your lord wants from you. Kind of like Knights and their King.

@Eddie Ricketts @Orchidilia Let’s not romanticize katanas here. They do indeed cut through flesh like a knife through butter, but many swords do. They can even slice bone and dismember, given the right situation. They are not, however, magic. They were simply sidearms, just like swords for knights and Vikings.
@SohiHien
@SohiHien 3 жыл бұрын
@@fivesidedpixels4991 I'm not romanticizing. They can easily cut through flesh (like tofu) and cut through bone. I'm not suggesting they can cut a person in half in a single strike or anything but they are rather sharp, well made, and well designed swords so them, along with other swords, can easily kill a person and cut through things. Especially in the first few strikes when the blade is at it's best and hasn't been nicked or dulled and when used by someone that understands the blade and has the strength and skill to use it. They used to do sharpness tests for katanas by cutting up dead bodies.
@fivesidedpixels4991
@fivesidedpixels4991 3 жыл бұрын
@Eddie Ricketts There don’t seem to be any scientific tests like you say, unfortunately. If you can find a link, please show me. Listen, I love Japanese weapons as well, but I also know they’re surrounded in myths. The fact is that there isn’t anything special about katanas that makes them cut amazingly. Tamahagane steel was a poor quality metal, so Japanese smiths had to devise several tricks just to create a decent blade. The swords were curved, but so were kilij and shamshirs in the East. They had a hard edge that stayed sharp, but chipped easier. Do I still think they’re cool? Of course! Kenjutsu, iaido, battōjutsu are still incredible arts. Just remember swords didn’t matter as much as the people behind them.

It is funny he points out "there's no dishonorable way, just kill them" despite the game's overarching theme, because when it came to the real samurai they very, very seldom fought in the cinematic way movies and games depict them as... dueling one on one in a field of flowers in the wind, swords drawn... that just didn't happen unless it was some kind of duel between high-ranking nobles or clan leaders over some personal dispute. Truthfully, Armor is actually very good at protecting you from getting cut, even the giant razor blades that are Katanas... so in reality, most samurai actually killed other samurai by literally body slamming them to the ground and then stabbing them in the eye or cutting their throat with a dagger, its where Jiujitsu (and later, Judo) came from.

Thats basically how you have to kill an armored target, armor and even more steel plating is pretty hard and almost imposible to cut with a sword (i would say it's outright imposible but idk, sometimes i'm surprised), the same happened in europe with the full plate armored knights the only way of killing one was to wrestle him to the ground and stab them through the gaps in the armor

Wouldn't it technically ( very nitpicky thing for me to say) be Jujutsu ? I thought jiujitsu was the modern martial art
@undeadgames309
@undeadgames309 3 жыл бұрын
He actually says that because their “bandits” their is no dishonorable way to kill them. This does not apply to when dueling other samurai. When facing other samurai sneak attacks were looked down upon but it doesn’t mean people didn’t do it. You are correct with how many samurai don’t just meet up in a field to duel, Myamoto Musashi who was said to be the greatest duelist during that period got most of his wins via surprise attacks.
@Defsolid
@Defsolid 3 жыл бұрын
As Ebihara sensei pointed out, they weren't accurate in depicting the period as far as what kind of swords were used by the samurai and how they were worn back then and the duel element which was more of an Edo period thing (1600s till the 1800s) when armors weren't used, all in all, it's Edo period martial elements put in another era of Japan's history. PS: A flagrant example of the mixing of periods is the use of iai techniques (drawing the sword and cutting at the same time), that's definitely a style that didn't exist back then.

Overall pretty accurate. The Director of the game did say that they took many liberties, particularly in the style of the outfits/gear, which were not constrained to the Mongolian invasion period only, but included outfits that didn't become fashionable until 100 to 200 years later. Nevertheless, I think it's cool that they did that because it makes the game more diverse and aesthetically pleasant.

That's the thing: katanas did not exist at the time of the first mongol invasion of Japan, instead the samurai used similar swords called Tachi (this term is even used instead of katana in the Japanese localization for a more historically-accurate experience). The difference between a tachi and a katana is their typical length and how they were worn on the obi sash: a katana usually measures around 60 cm long and was worn with the cutting edge facing up; on the other hand, a tachi measures around 80 cm long and was worn with the cutting edge facing down. The guy was pointing out the use of the katana in this era is anachronistic.

Samurai were brutal and violent killing machines yeah.... They practically used everything to their advantage as you saw in 13 Assassins They favored practicality above all else and not these weird ritualized honorable one on one duels as portrayed in pop-culture as many of those romantic fabrications didn't come until the late Edo Period and modern era in the 1900's... Honor to a Samurai back then was winning for their daimyo lords and clan by any means necessary and it didn't matter on the method that is being used like deception, espionage, ambush, night-attacks, guerrilla tactics and even assassination... Samurai were highly known for assassinating and back-stabbing...

I love how the dude looked past the system and just eyeballed the experience (even assigning statuses based on dress)... us as players are taught that vs shields (in this game) you switch to water stance... he instead saw it as why go full on vs the unarmored opponent that was presented. Would've liked to have seen his interpretation on Wind & Moon as well. He basically intimated that there could've been another tier of gameplay out there: fights between armored and unarmored opponents. I also liked his point about how the anachronistic way that Edo period Japan is the default presentation for any historical Japan portrayals. I get it, the character was scripted for single-sword, but access to Nagamaki, Yari, or Naginata would've been dope -they script movements for the Mongols and your allies, why can't I reverse-engineer their techniques instead as the Ghost.

Great point. The pseudo-ritualistic style of combat prevalent in Japan at the time didn’t work against them, and, strictly speaking, samurai etiquette would not really apply to foreigners anyway.

I believe sucker punch nvr intended to make this game historically accurate. They just wanted to create a samurai game because they are fans of kurosawa's films. So I don't particularly think this is a big issue...🤣
