That’s so interesting to see the different ways that a dog can ride a bus. I don’t plan on training a service dog, but pet dogs are allowed on buses where I’m at.

Nice to see how you teach this we don't have the luxury of getting on buses before they move so I do it when they are small enough to carry, one is a wiggly age of awesome potential shining through and for us a few minor meltdowns normally fixed with cuddles and play brakes

You'd be surprised how accommodating public transit can be if you ask. I've had clients ask and they've allowed them into the depot before work starts or after hours to practice on stationary busses. Also, going to the end of the line can be really helpful to find sitting busses.

It can definitely take a lot of work to get the right training scenario. For example, I drive 5 to 6 hours round trip to do city work in the Boston and NYC area. I plan for these trips ahead of time and make use of whatever is closest to me to prepare for these larger trips. Sometimes I will stay overnight to maximize the drive and get practice in hotels.

Hi PinupPitBill! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! I am not currently offering private coaching, as my docket is pretty full and unfortuntely, there's only one of me at the moment. That being said, I may be offering one-off coaching calls in the future. The best way to get notified of new offerings is through my newsletter, which you can subscribe to at DOGGYU.com. I do offer 3 minutes of video review of your training (and specific feedback) at the Top Fan level on Patreon, if that interests you. You can find that at www.patreon.com/doggyu In the meantime, you may want to check out Atlas Assistance Dogs or the Assistance Dog International website to find a trainer that can help you with your specific situation. I will be getting a mobility and medical alert service dog after 1 year of training, and I'll be doing another year of training through virtual lessons with their training program multiple times a week for another year. However, the training organization is located in the country, and there is no paratransit for them to train on. I'm going to have to train this myself. This involves boarding by getting on a lift most times that then elevates while we sit on it, and it's pretty small. Then, we navigate onto the bus, and the dog has to sit in the open floor near me, and the ride is VERY bumpy, sometimes to the point of knocking the wind out of me. However, this is the only powerchair and autism accessible transport near me. It goes door to door as well, which is needed for my autism. What tips do you have to prepare a dog for this? I will also be asking my training organization once I have fundraised enough for the dog.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 6 күн бұрын
I would make it a point for the organization to begin this training for you. While your dog may be fine with it, it's best to take this training in stages and having them do the whole process all at once may be overwhelming. I'd have the training facility spend the time needed to drive to a location where they can practice different modes of transport. This is standard practice for most service dog organizations, as most people will require their dog to take public transport at some point in their career.

Will your Service Dog 101 course be useful to clean up skills for a service dog who's already been working for a long time. My Boy turns 5 this month and we've been a team for 3 years but I feel some of his skills are slipping slightly and I want to find way to improve his skills. We especially struggle with his DPT Tasks we always have he does his best but I'm not sure he's necessarily comfortable with the task. I'm unsure of if it's his size or something else
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 9 ай бұрын
Hi Jorvik! The SD 101 course is not a dog training course, but instead a people training course on the ins and outs of navigating the world using a service dog. This means it wouldn't be the right course for you and your dog. Have you checked out my video on DPT? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmWpkKlumdyqZsksi=yvNpZTzSY9dTRASV I would go back to basics and practice your foundation skills. Some of this is also innate to the dog. You want to find a dog that really enjoys the pressure/laying on you. But you can also cultivate the skill with lots of reinforcement in the desired DPT position. Try feeding entire meals in DPT position to build value. Hope that helps!

Definitely seems like a very methodical and well-thought-out way of teaching it. Thanks for showing us. Definitely helps to see it broken down. Do you teach the offer attention any differently when working with GuideDogs? I have low vision and I taught my dog the word focus means to make iContact with me but there are times when I’m working with her on doing tasks on my blind side and it would be useful to teach her a Q to put her attention on me that doesn’t involve making iContact so I can recognize when she’s doing it no matter where she’s standing in relation to me.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 9 ай бұрын
For guide dogs, I opt for physical focus cues vs. eye contact ones. So I would train a really strong hand touch, or strong nose boop to side of body. These physical cues make sure the dog has refocused on the handler, and the touch of the dog gives you the cue you need to mark and reinforce. Hope that helps!
@burmatruex
@burmatruex 9 ай бұрын
Hi Laura, would love to see you talk about situations where the primary handler is NOT the person with a disability. In my case that is a child who will eventually take over all aspects. (For now I am the primary handler but dog needs to respond to both) But it could be a caregiver for someone whose disabilities allow for some independence but who doesn’t have the full strength to always manage the dog (*especially* a dog in training). How do you transition from one handler to another, particularly when that back and forth is a part of the ongoing living situation? Pitfalls? Helpful games etc. Thanks!

Hi Burmatruex! Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately, I don't specialize in this modality of service dogs. I've done a few team trainings of this sort, but I am by no means an expert. I will add it to the list and see if I can find an expert who does more of these teams than I have :)

Hi JRay! Thanks for inquiring! I just released my Service Dog 101 Course. That being said, that course is for those starting their service dog journey. It's all about training the human about what to expect when working with and training a service dog. I do not have any training courses out yet. And when I do, there won't be just one course, but many courses depending on your goals and interests. If you haven't yet, I highly recommend that you join my Patreon at www.patreon.com/doggyu. Lots of puppy training videos over there (but again, no full curriculum yet). That being said, I highly recommend you check out my reading list. There's a couple of good ones for new puppy guardians. www.amazon.com/shop/doggyu I would also check out Donna Hill's courses and Cooperative Paws to see what they offer in regards to service dog puppy training :) Happy Training!

My lab is showing great promise with her training so far but I don't drive and there are no dog friendly shopping malls within a reasonable distance on public transport for an introduction to those kinds of environments 😭 I'd have to travel for almost 2 hours and I don't dont want to put her through that. Plus shes only been on a bus twice (same trip) and she was small enough for me to pick up back then, although I did leave her on the floor for the majority of the short journey. I'd also have to get on atleast one train probrably two, which is completely unfamiliar to her. My parents said they wouldnt mind driving to a few places but they rarely follow through with those promises 😢. Im taking her on a five minute bus ride to a park that's new to her tomorrow, I haven't been there in years. I hope it goes well :'). Does anyone have any tips for preparing a dog for public access when out exposure to dog friendly access so few and far between? I'd appreciate anything.

Hey Lauren - there's way more dog-friendly spaces than you may think. Here's a video I did on it if you haven't checked it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGmVe2Cih9uGZtk Alternatively, if SDiTs are given the same rights as service dogs in your state (check the state laws) than maybe starting in small shops could work for you. But most towns have a hardware store, a book store, and/or a tractor supply or farm store, all of which are good places to start!
@laurenedge6392
@laurenedge6392 5 ай бұрын
@DoggyU thank you for responding :D. I am in the UK, I'm pretty sure ADit have the same rights as a fully trained AD, there's just that added bit of stress taking them into non-dog friendly places when they arent used to thise environments. The problem I have is that I live far from any towns, and all shops near are not dog friendly, or atleast as far as I'm aware. My local library was very welcoming to my past ADit who unfortunately had nervousness issues (living happily as my little at home shadow now 😊), so that could also be a good place to start too. I think I'll do some Google maps investigating. Thanks for the advice! Your channel is by far the best for dog training content!

I’d also look at my video on the engage disengage game (search “doggyu reactive dog” and it should pop up). This exercise should help with reactions to people. But I’d get a professional trainers help on board as soon as possible.
