Are you training your own service dog? What breed of puppy/dog are you working with? I love GSDs for guide dog work, but also prefer labs for other types of service work. What's your favorite service dog breed?

I live in a very rural area. Approximately 4 weeks ago, My husband and granddaughter went hiking in the state park we live across from. They found a mixed Aussie/Lab just sitting on a bridge. My husband carried her to his truck. When they got home, my husband said come outside, look what we found! I came outside to see a 5month old Aussie. He was shivering, a little skittish, and had a minor injury on one leg, and a white flea collar on it’s neck. I could only imagine that she was lost, and hoped she was not abandoned. My husband was so excited, telling me this the dog he’s been telling me he wanted. ( even though the dog would be my service dog ) we pick at each other about what dog we should get all the time…Lol…I told him we have to post him in our county and the surrounding counties FB lost and found cat and dog pages, along with contacting the shelters of a reported missing mixed Aussie, and we need to post the person who claims him had to show proof of ownership of the sweet pup. That would be the moral thing to do. We had 2 cats and a parrot ( one passed away several years ago) Fast forward… I posted the dog’s pic from different angles, to show her markings. Within a minute, people started to respond that the dog looks like a lady who has been religiously posting looking for her pup. She was especially concerned because we had a big storm coming, but by that time the snow storm had came and gone. About a minute later, a lady posted “Where is she? I’ll come get her.” I asked did she have proof that it’s hers”, and she sent a pic of the missing pup with his name Onyx flyer. I told her he’s very cold, I fed him, and my husband just took him, along with my granddaughter to Walmart to get some flea shampoo to wash him, but he turned around when I called to tell him, I found his owner. We had fed Onyx 2cans of cat food and some water. ( that’s all we had ) My husband just cleared the garage to make her comfortable bedding, we didn’t know how she would interact with our pets and vice versa, and we didn’t know if it was up to date on it’s immunizations. Anyway, Onyx was happily reunited with his family. That night I received a message that Onyx’s mother ( the neighbors dog. She has Onyx’s father), had another litter of and the day after Onyx went missing. About an hr. after she was reunited, we got a phone call from her and she offered us one of them as a reward and we picked the one that looked like Onyx. We weren’t ready to get a new dog yet, but I think was God sending me help with my debilitating Lupus, Rheumatoid, Osteoporosis, and MDD that gives me chronic pain. She’s not ready to come home yet, she’s only a little over 4 weeks and we’ve already named her Bella. I can’t wait to train her as a service dog. I called her a couple of days later to see how Onyx was doing and she said , he’s doing better, but he’s limping from the injury. She’s been sending us pics, of our new baby and the rest of the litter.

Heel off lead starting very early would have made our journey smoother. Poor Eps. She was taught to keep a taunt lead as she was a show dog prospect prior to us connecting around 8months old. This being followed by the very limited knowledge of the handler has made it hard for both of us. I have the tendancy to keep a tight rein (horses too) and she has the early trained tendancy to lean into it. Undoing poor handler training is so much more work. If I have another ADiT in the future I will try to get happy focused, off lead heel as a major puppy priority. I do love it so much when she is getting it right without even subtle re-cueing or enticement in high distraction environments. Thanks for these fantastic clips DoggyU.

Love your approach to training.. we are right now in the last few days and hopefully another week before our service dog (medical alert) Jake can finally stop his fight against cancer and move across that rainbow 🌈bridge to 4legged heavy which is one of the toughest things for us to witness and wrap our heads around. . I have never loved nor been so dependent on a animal in my life, he’s my battle buddy, the most popular family member and just a pure genuine soul that is so hard to find. He’s been my grounding force for nine years. I am a combat vet and a 20 year inner-city fire fighter. The void that Jake will leave well eventually have to be filled. Now with all that sappy, long winded stuff said. It’s been a long time since, vetting a dog for service work, training, working and preparing a potential service dog for the journey ahead. K9 for patriots has a program but that’s just a once a month meeting with a vetted dog that they supply which is a rescue. However Jake was vetted by myself and another individual and easily pass the temperament test from the beginning. I prefer to be an active part of picking our candidate. I love your videos your approach and your attitude on your training techniques I will definitely be following to brush up and prepare for the adventure ahead of our next potential “Jake” Which I can’t believe I already have to consider this while he lays here at my feet.

I can't say enough from personal experience how important it is to socialize your puppy... We bought a g s d puppy from a reputable breeder from a champion blook line. We went there to buy her sister.However last minute my wife talked me in to getting the runt of the litter that they kept indoors and in their daughter's bedroom... The puppy was rarely ever around other puppies or dogs and was kept indoors at birth for 8 weeks. We purchased her. She was somewhat timid But didn't know how to handle us or being in the sun.. She was nipping more than any other puppy.I've ever had and any contact with the Sun.She did now, 2 years old and even with trying to socialize her.She is fearful of everything... We have broke some bad habits.She's a great dog very smart.But it's very controlled by fear and very distracted with any noise or surroundings.

Thank you so much for having these videos!! I watch a lot of non trainers and they make so many sweeping statements that don’t always apply. I have 1 service dog for brain damage causing involuntary muscle movements. He can alert me and petting him is my “trick” to redirect the neurons. (Yes this is memorized. My 2 service dog is for crippling PTSD from DV. They are small >12lbs. My PTSD sits in a pouch in front of my chest for compression and alert freezes. In public buildings or public transportation she is always in the pouch. She has greater roaming outside. I have had multiple issues with the “four on the floor” thinking. I bring a dog stroller for my 1st Service Dog in hot, cold, rain, and snow. There are no booties to fit him and as small dog prone to have issues with weather. I also live in DC where if I go into places I wouldn’t be a good Service Dog companion. People aren’t aware of where they’re going. People don’t see him on the floor. There is a risk that he may be kicked or stepped on. The KZbin influencer’s are usually talking about larger breeds but people tend to listen to them and has caused issues with access with a dog stroller. This topic has been covered before and legally for those reasons I can have a dog stroller. I do have a question. Last year Bond and I, and a newly adopted small dog were viciously attacked by a Rotti. The other dog was killed and bled out in my arms. Bond and I had bites and other issues. It took Bond months to get over his PTSD of other dogs. Now that I have another one, dogs still go after him, he gets PTSD to protect her. Not if she’s safe in the pouch. I don’t yell or constantly say no, not always, I usually bend down and reassure him it’s “okay”. I’m not going to scream at a dog reacting from trauma. Can you let me know how to help him. The other problem I have that when walking him I can see the aggressive posture the other dog is showing. The owners are usually oblivious or on their phone. When I ask them to pull back on their dogs leashes the owners go on the offense. Do you have any recommendations. As they are small dogs, I have Service Dog vests and on the collar wrapped handkerchiefs stating their service dogs. I can’t stop people from petting them. I can’t stop children from poking or petting them. Either people don’t look. See the best too late. Some just don’t care. Any suggestions. Since they are small dogs I got from the kennel I am constantly bombarded with dealing with people barring public access who don’t believe me or I have the constant eye roll. What is your opinion on a federal registry. I’m for it. I also live gooby for small and medium dogs for harnesses and clothing. The are step in and the clothing zips up in the back. I do recommend their surf leashes. The handle goes around the wrist and tightens with Velcro. I don’t have to worry about dropping the handle. The leash is strong polyester and does well in all weather. However, the Velcro wrist strap ruins sweaters and some other fabrics to be careful with. I love your channel. My philosophy is very similar to yours and it’s so refreshing. As much they are medical devices they’re also dogs and deserve the right to also be respected for being a dog.

Glad you found it helpful! You may want to see if the puppy can go back with its mother until at least 8 weeks. Dogs that are removed from their mother prior to 8 weeks can potentially have significant social issues. If that's not a possibility, I would get in with a training facility right away to foster appropriate social experiences during their early socialization period (up to 14-16 weeks). Happy Training!

@@DoggyU thanks for replying, sorry I missed it. I’ve brought home a rescue twice that were both in foster care and both supposed to be very chill and low energy. I felt like I had to helicopter parent constantly because they were much higher energy, wouldn’t walk on leash, then would pee or poop inside because they didn’t go out, etc. They were both adult dogs who were supposed to be crate trained, housebroken, and walk well. It seemed that wasn’t the case, and/or the adjustment period was just overwhelming for me. In both cases I had to return the dog to the rescue because I just felt so crazy overwhelmed, heart racing, etc. This video was on a puppy, and while I think in some ways it may be easier than a shelter/rescue dog, it scares me that I may need to helicopter parent them too. I do work from home, but can’t always get up and let the dog out every hour or so to avoid accidents. I worry about destructive behavior/chewing and accidents so I watch them like a hawk.

I love this, very helpful, thank you! I had a pup thay was an agility dog and very in tune with me from the begin with. He was never a service dog, and never a cuddling type, but having chronic migraines and seizures, he would get very up close and velcro attentive, nudging me if I had seizures. He has since passed and just today I have adopted a two month old boxer/pittie and would like to mold him into a service dog. It's only been a day, but I've noticed he's quite quick to please. However, at what point would you "give up" and say it just wouldn't be possible to train a dog as a service dog. I also want him to keep him off furniture, but how would you model that around a dog that DOES jump up on things? I understand if you are unable to answer all these things, and regardless love your video and sweet baby! ♡
@DoggyU10 ай бұрын
The best thing to do is to follow the training/assessment path that I outline in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYWbdp2Viqp-Zrs If you're not able to meet these goals in a reasonable timeframe, it might be time to switch the dog to at-home service dog work. As far as furniture - the only reason I need the puppy to not jump on the couch is that she was a program-dog, meaning she wasn't mine, so they need to stay off furniture, which you can also train using management and rewarding for being on the floor. But my personal service dog *does* go on the couch at home. Thanks for your kind words and happy training!

One thing i need to add to my routine is the feeding at all moments thats a good technique .. do you use treats all the time is that dog food that u just feed in bits?

Depends on the dog - my cow dog will work for kibble just as well as higher value rewards, but my koolie won't work as well for kibble so I tend to make a trail mix of kibble, store-bought treats, and other high value treats like cheese or chicken.

how old is the puppy when the training (this video) starts/started? when should i start training tasks, age wise? what is the easiest trick/command (not task) to start with? when do i introduce a hand cue after the shaping down behavior (for the command down)? when do i introduce words, such as ‘free’/‘break’ or ‘place’?
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
The puppy is about 7 or 8 weeks when this video starts. Task training foundations can happen quite early in the training - like teaching targeting skills. The retrieve should happen after they are done getting their full set of adult teeth so their mouth doesn't hurt. Easiest cue for a dog to learn is generally sit. Thanks heaps for this wonderful information. I am researching the Australian Cobberdog with the view to get and possibly train a puppy in the next year or so. I am just starting to sometimes need to use a walking stick or wheelchair shopping etc as I have mobility issues with back, neck, knees and ankle so will need the dog to fetch things, push pedestrian/lift buttons and possibly help me get up if I fall over. I am 154.5 cm and wondered what size dog I should look at? Cheers from Australia.

I just got my prospect and your video is super helpful! One thing I’m curious is how you introduce the dog to new environments, is it only after the dog gets used to training? How often do you take the dog to new environments?
@DoggyU3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Corina! I start introducing them to new environments after 8 weeks in short, 5-10 minute trips with lots of cookies. Typically I try to go to a new place a few times a week. But I only train in familiar places to start (like my house, yard etc.) Hope that helps!
@DoggyU3 жыл бұрын
(typically they are contained in a shopping cart or similar in the new environments if the expectation is that they should be well behaved. And then they are on a long line if we're in the woods or at a park, though I tend to avoid populated spaces at this age if they are going to be on the ground)

Please understand that because of my disability, I have a hard time concentrating. I may make multiple comments (my questions may not make sense either). How long does the training and a trained service dog get training per day? I was told 10-15 mins a day otherwise it could be too much.
@noua_aube Жыл бұрын
Hello, I know this video is quite old now, but I'll take my bet! The services offered by the state here to getanb assistance dog aren't great, and the time on waiting lists are too long (and you're not even sure to get the dog in the end!). I've never had a dog before so it would be a huge challenge. I'm learning as much as possible before getting a dog. You're listing different skills that the dog will need to acquire throughout the days, weeks, and months. How much should you train your new puppy per day? You wrote "puppy's first week home", so are you teaching it all these cues in a week, like a few minutes for a cue per day? Thanks for the answer, and have a nice day.
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
A few minutes of training several times a day is your best bet. You definitely don't have to teach all these cues in the first week! Take it slow and focus on socialization first, and teaching them to love learning. You can teach the actual behaviors at any time. I would pick 3-5 skills you'll work on for 1-2 minutes each skill throughout the week, rotating them. So pick 2-3 skills per training session and train them for 1-2 minutes each.

I'm stuck with barking. Any tips to train against barking when a dog/person goes into the area your dog thinks is theirs? (german shepherd/golden mix) right now I'm just treating for watch me or trying to get attention with treats, plus working on decreasing dog barking and people excitement at petsmart as tolerated by rewarding quiet with treats. That part is improving but more people and dogs are coming near my dog's potty spot so he barks at them and since they don't know us, they go away before I can reward very many times for quiet. Was thinking we may need to watch from the car but I don't know anyone's schedule

Hi Jenny - training your own service dog is definitely a full time job. But remember that you can break it down into several 5 minute chunks a day. Most people can sneak away for a few minutes at a time multiple times a day to get the reps in. I highly recommend some sort of fridge chart to keep track of each of your 3-5 minute sessions throughout the day, and to keep track of what you're working on. While getting around other dogs/people/stimulus is important, remember that my channel has tons of step by step videos on how to train behavior in the meantime. Happy Training!

Hi Mileena - unfortunately, dogs who are reactive and fearful are not good candidates for service dog work. We can't ask dogs who are uncomfortable in their environment to also task for us. It may be best to look for a new prospect, or have your service dog be an "at home" service dog. There's a lot a dog can do just in your house to help you with your disability, without putting the stress of public access on the dog. It's also a great way to practice your training skills for your next service dog prospect.

So when the dog is up on the couch what do you do? I say no and guide them off and to something else but they keep on going up and I don’t know how to stop it bc he thinks it’s a game now.
@DoggyU8 ай бұрын
So I would focus on management, and then reward for being on the ground. Management means they are either tethered, or dragging a leash so that I can gently grab or step on the leash before they try to get on the couch and prevent them from doing it, and then re-direct them to a ground activity. Alternatively, tethered away from the couch. This is only a problem if you don't want them on the couch. This dog was destined to be a guide dog, so no furniture is a rule. My personal service dog is allowed on the furniture.

Can I click multiple times if the dog stays in the position that I want him to stay?
@DoggyU Жыл бұрын
I don't tend to use a clicker for stays because the click usually excited the dog. I use a calm "yes" marker. If I "Yes" or mark, I'm going back in to feed the dog. So you can click multiple times but each click should be followed by a reinforcer - 1-to-1 ration.

Do you have to get a puppy? I’ve been researching service dog training for over a year and have saved a bunch to get the ball rolling, but im hoping to rescue a young dog (1-2 years max) and train them to be my service animal. (Me - ASD, ADHD, CPTSD, POTS) Im going to the humane society here in San Diego to chat with someone in a couple days to get a better idea of the adoption process, meet some potential pups, and get some of my questions answered before committing and bring home a dog. What are your thoughts on training a rescue as a service animal and how old is too old to start the process?
@DoggyU7 ай бұрын
In general, my preference is for a well-bred dog from health tested parents who have service dogs in their lines. This gives the owner-trainer the highest chance of success. Service dog training is really hard, and my goal is always to stack the cards in the favor of the handler as much as I can. When considering a rescue dog, one of the major problems tends to be lack of socialization that's appropriate for service dog work (many rescue dogs do not get proper socialization in the period from 3 weeks to 14 weeks the represents the critical socialization period), along with unknown factors regarding health. This is especially problematic if any of the tasks you're looking to train are weight bearing. Health also effects longevity. While health is not guaranteed from a purebred dog with health tested parents, you can rule out genetic conditions via parentage and genetic testing, as well as stack the cards in your favor that you're not dealing with career-ending conditions like elbow or hip dysplasia. If you are considering a rescue, getting an adult is definitely your best bet. I would look at breed-specific (and more specifically lab or golden specific if possible) rescues that foster *in home*. It is very hard to get a good read on a dog that is in a shelter environment. Ideally, you would also foster to adopt where you have a few weeks to decide if this candidate is right for you. I would also bring along a trainer who has experience performing temperament testing for service dogs to help rule in or out candidates if at all possible. I address the topic of breed, breeder, and puppy selection, including puppy testing, at length in my Service Dog 101 course. It's really designed for right where you are in your journey, so I highly recommend you check it out if you have the resources to do so. Also, Patreon members get 15% off all my courses: courses.doggyu.com/p/service-dog-101 Hopefully this was helpful! Best, Laura
