Join real teachers JC and Simon as they react to the 1995 movie "Mr. Holland's Opus" starring Richard Dreyfuss. They will break down the movie from a teacher perspective, and let you know how realistic and/or effective Richard Dreyfuss is as a teacher.

That black student he was teaching in the marching band wasn't Cuba Gooding Jr but actor Terrence Howard.

Thank you for pausing for that long thought. I was beginning to worry you guys were missing important dialogue talking over the movie.

I respect the fact that this is your channel, but I honestly don't see how you could follow the movie talking over the dialogue so much. Much of the characterization is in the dialogue. The interaction between the characters is the point of the movie. Maybe you could limit your reactions between scenes?

I agree. They missed really profound statements by Mr. Holland a few times and never addresses them. Like his reasoning for teaching Rock music, which I think was his best line as a teacher in the whole movie.

Remember this is a reaction to a film so this is their reaction to this movie. Different people react differently to movies. Don't get me wrong I'm similar to you and I couldn't watch a film like this, unless I'd watched it many, many times before. But I have friends who would watch a movie like this, and I'm sure lots of others would too. It's up to us to decide whether we watch it with our friends, or choose other activities to do with those friends, and simply find others to watch films with that'll watch films in the same way we do.

@@LoulizabethNon sense they didn't react to this film in any way. All they did was ramble on and on it was horrible. If these two were in a theater doing this the audience would throw them out the fire escape door.

This was one of my all-time favorite movies. Richard Dryfus should have won an oscar for this. It is done so authentically and truly captured the spirit of the era - one that I grew up in and was in high school. BRAVO!

Every single school bus in the United States is painted the exact same color - a hue officially known as "National School Bus Glossy Yellow" - but it wasn't always that way. A century ago, kids were transported to school by all kinds of random vehicles.

I was intrigued by teachers reacting to a film about teaching. But you two made this a non-stop gabfest. There wasn't a moment in the movie that you two weren't laughing and talking over the film. Your good nature is appealing if it didn’t overwhelm the movie.

Not Cuba Gooding Jr. It is a young Terrence Howard (Roadie in the first Iron Man)

I love this movie~ Being an American, I can definitely answer some of your questions. Yes, all school busses are yellow. Why? Because they are all obnoxiously easy to see and identify and in theory, easier to avoid in a collision. The high school in the movie is a real high school in Vancouver, Washington. (different name of course) Not all high schools are that big but ones that serve a larger population can be. The music room specifically was larger than most because it needed more space. It had to have good acoustics for instruments, choir practice and also provide room for desks. During the parade, you asked if someone was driving a motorized bathtub. Yes. Yes they were. Here in the Pacific Northwest (I am from Portland, Oregon) there is/was a popular parade addition called the Portland Rainmakers- clowns who rode in motorized bathtubs or walked with inverted umbrellas and squirted the audience with water guns.

The Rowena subplot could have been removed and I don't think the movie would have lost much (her singing was lovely, though).

I love the channel. I have another suggestion, a movie called "Blast from the past " It is a very funny movie starring Brendan Frasier, (The Whale...The Mummy...etc.) It does have a very small amount of teaching where a former Cal Tech professor is homeschooling his son. I know that is a bit of a stretch, but I think it still counts, and that you will love it. You guys rock.
