+8osiris Yep and in Florida 12 years ago a guy name Ted Cruz helped steal the election in 2000. He told the guards on I-95 to throw all the paper votes with hanging chad out of the back of the Armored truck. Bush was only ahead by 800 votes. Good old Ted told the guards to just open the back door and let them fly. Over 100,000 votes for Gore. Bush gave good old Ted a job. No I will not stand in line for 5 hours when they talk about getting elected for 2 years. Only give you 1 day to vote. The people get hacked all the time by the 1% of the voters.

My guess is that Reihan Salam has not been to Cuba. If he had he would have seen that Cubans are more educated than most Americans - even taxi drivers have at least one University degree - and have better healthcare. Yes, there is poverty and hardship, but all of that has been fed by the American trade embargo. Despite this, the people are still happier than those in the US. Grow up America, if you want to see a more open Cuba, go there and embrace it, and then work on it from the inside. And if you fear it staying a communist State, be assured that the Chinese are already there and investing billions in economic projects.

Young Dre Your idea of 'citizen' is someone else's idea of 'terrorist', I don't give a fuck about either definition, if the Gitmo prisoners had actually commited any crime they'd be on trial by now but they don't have a single shred of evidence against them, they are being held simply on 'suspicion' and 'national security' grounds, the exact same crap that repressive regimes pull in order to imprison their own citizens, the fact these are not even US's own citizens makes it even worse. +Vanneker Note that no one was laughing like it was a joke. I doubt he'd go out of his way to hang a banner of Ted Cruz, make a hat saying "better Ted than dead", and go on a 5 minute rant saying one thing, just so he can say the exact opposite thing (with no comedic set up by the way - another sign it was not a joke), which comes off just confusing. If you were right, that would mean that he went back on everything he just said while wearing a hat that says the opposite. Common now, you have to be smarter than that. We all know he doesn't support Ted. Thanks for stating the obvious. The fact that you feel you need to say that and add a "lol" tells me you are likely not thinking very deep on this. Part of my point was that Bill does this kind of stuff all the time, which, if you were someone who doesn't miss an episode, like myself, you would have to admit is true. You may believe it was a calculated move, but fans of Real Time that watch every week have come to expect Bill to fuck up from time to time in the way he says things. It has nothing to do with intent, it's a pattern of mistakes, often with unfortunate timing. Then again, this is a youtube comments section and I'm wondering why I'm explaining this to someone who is going to believe whatever they want. Sound reasoning usually has no place in youtube comment section conversations, so I'll leave my comments at that.

I agree Cuba has some strengths especially supplying medical care & education, but the governments complete control of wages, newspaper, and internet is destroying them. Plus their medical schools and practices are currently underfunded because Cuba relied heavily on the Soviet Union for cash. But I do applaud Cuba for having the most doctors per population ration. They actually loan their doctors out to other countries for Oil & resources.

The irony of an American talking about Cuba's human rights record. The worst crimes in Cuba happen in Gitmo.
@jplb96
@jplb96 8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Bacon Another ironic comment. The US rounds up people who they think are enemies of the US and executes, tortures and imprisons them. Cuba has one of the best humanitarian aid projects in the world. Brought down apartheid South Africa, people in Cuba have free healthcare and education, an incredible scientific community, has a higher literacy rate than the US, better infant mortality, house ownership, etc. Has Cuba problems? Of course, it does, some quite terrible. But the US has no right to complain about Cuba. The US has invaded, funded dissidents, sought to start revolutions, sought to assassinate the Cuban leaders hundreds of times, and so on. Cuban dissidents, in Cuba, are in US mainstream media every single day. Why haven't they been killed?

Eisenhower did by hid policy of starving the Cuban people to submission to the USA and after about two years Russia came to Cuba’s aid and Castro joined the communist party. • Cuba has the second largest Tourist arrival/stayover (5.5 million) in the Caribbean, average stay 5-14 days. • Cuba has more Hotels and Hotel Rooms (63,000) than any 4 country combined in the Caribbean except for Dominican Republic, but none are Americans and that is why they now want to go there. • Cuba host Embassies from 95% of the Countries in the world. • Every Country in the world trade and do business with Cuba except the USA. • Every major Airline fly’s into Cuba except the USA. • Every Bank in the world do business with Cuba except the USA. • Every Country Credit Cards are used in Cuba except the USA. • Cuba has the largest Container Port in the Caribbean and Americas and 75% of all goods traveling through the Panama Canal bound for the USA will have to be off loaded in Cuba. • The US Dollar was costing Cuba 25 to 35% on exchange when the purchase goods and service from Europe, Asia and China, but they only charge a 10% exchange to USA and other Tourist. • The Lease between Cuba and the USA on Guantánamo Bay was signed in 1903 for about $2,000 per year and now $4,085 per year, Since 1959 after the Cuban Revolution the Cuban government has cashed only one of the rent checks from the U.S. the lease for Guantanamo stipulated that it would not expire until both countries agree to its termination. • Cuba has some of the best Doctors in the world who travel throughout the Caribbean South America and Africa giving free medical treatment to the poor. • Cuba has some of the best Teachers in the world who travel throughout the Caribbean South America and Africa giving free education to the poor. • All Cuban citizens of Cuba are given free medical treatment and free education up to PhD. • Cuba has oil production and drilling off shore in partnership with the Chinese Government. • Every Country is sell automobiles in Cuba except the USA, but CNN and other media houses don’t show them.The USA is late getting in Cuba as they are in South America and Africa. Opening up Cuba is not the People or Human Rights, it about MONEY…only money.

But the way you interviewed Cory Booker - constantly interrupting him and not letting him finish his sentences - was disappointingly similar to the styles of Chris Matthews (on HRC in particular) and Piers Morgan (on gun issues). ***** - I disagree! Hey, I am a "YUGE" supporter/fan of Bill Maher's, and I am not "out to get him"! Quite to the contrary! To be fair, I will watch this segment again. Still, Bill does seem to be hung up on the Islamic religion and its "immense, inherent evil-causing dogma”. The Christians are much smarter about/with their "evil acts". Just because they don't kill large groups of people in a single act, does NOT mean their pathology is any less deadly, harmful or pervasive. It can be compared to mass gun murders versus daily, single murders by gun. The mass murders garner all the attention, horror and headlines. But they account for only a small percentage of "gun murders". The daily, single murders are FAR more costly in just about EVERY category, but they get little to NO national media coverage. "Out of media site, out of American's minds"!

**Regarding Voter ID:** And unfortunately, what _none_ of the panelists failed to cover is the fact that it's not just the law itself that's bad, it's what the state can do _following_ the law. Take Alabama. About a year after passing a Voter ID law, they started shutting down multiple DMV offices across the state, claiming they needed to cut costs. Well, guess which counties had their DMV offices shut down? *The counties with the most per capita African-Americans in the state.* ...Only by the purest of coincidences, of course; they're certainly not trying to make it so that you effectively _need_ a driver's license in order to _get_ a driver's license! Remember, Chief Justice John Roberts said the South no longer has problems with racism, so it must be true!

well we have the Republican party which currently control half of the government, they believe college education should be a luxury item instead of a standard item. so to answer your question, free education is not going to happen any time soon as long as Republican have power. so you better hope your family is rich, or pick up a low income job and start saving money, or take out a loan and hope you will succeed.

The last topic for panel discussion on the actual show was just the kind of crazy shit Bill Maher says sometimes that makes me want to fucking scream at him! Seriously, did he really say that people in Europe are starting to understand the plight of the Israelis? Did he really say that! I am just perplexed. The plight of the Palestinians is what causes terrorism in Israel, he actually goes on to say that walling them up is the best option! Are you fucking kidding me!! First of all how is that any different than what Ted Cruz said earlier in the week about policing Muslim neighborhoods? And second, how has that worked out for the Israel-Palestine crisis? Worked pretty good huh, that is a real peaceful place over there with no oppression (if you can't tell that was sarcasm). This is the kind of backwards logic created by violence and fear, you can't just lock up the people that don't agree with you, seems Bill has something in common with those Emery students. The other point I want to make is the numbers Bill always uses about Muslims in Islamic countries who support Sharia law. He paraded the numbers around earlier int he show like they are the epitome of the truth. There is a simple fact about statistics, it matters what the questions are and it matters where you take the poll. I don't know what exactly they ask, but I do know that this is a poll of Muslims in Islamic countries, OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO SAY THEY WANT SHARIA LAW! A majority probably couldn't give a shit less one way or the other, but it's like asking an American in the United States if we should keep the American judicial system. Most people are just going to agree, it doesn't mean they support letting off wealthy people from horribly exploitative crimes or that they support overwhelming conviction of non-white ethnicities. If Muslims around the world lived in moderate religious or secular states they would probably be able to speak their minds more, so maybe the issue isn't the people on the ground its the people in power who use Islam as a weapon. I agree with Bill Maher on basically every topic except for his stance on Islam, I just can't fathom how he and so many other people do not see how the connections work. You meet people with violence they respond with violence. I don't understand what he wants to do, attack Muslim countries? If Muslims are so fucking bad then what is to be done with them? It's just ridiculous! They are people, like all other people, those of them who have power want to retain that power and so they do anything in said power to keep it! How is this different than what we have gone through in this country with racism in the South. Think of Jim Crow as Sharia Law, how did liberals fight it? By condemning the whole judicial system? No, they went down there, performed sit-ins, got arrested, got killed! But now we have at least ostensibly a system which is not supposed to look at ethnicity when determining laws, of course that doesn't pan out in the policing of those laws but at least the laws themselves have been largely (though not entirely) corrected. If you want to support moderate Muslims around the world then support women in Muslim countries by promoting their education and health care, work on banning discrimination against non-Muslims in Islamic countries, promote freedom of gender identity and queer lifestyles in Muslim countries. This is a massive wall of power that needs to be eroded, you don't erode something by using all your force all at once, but slowly and over time. In the United States our judicial system is not even close to being perfect, but we are a lot closer than we were in 1916 or 1816. Muslim countries will take many generations to also find liberal values and equality for everyone, but that process does not start with meeting violence with violence with violence with violence....

Out here in California, an ID is $28. If one can't afford it they can pay $8. So the Democrats find that requiring someone to own an $8 ID to prove you are who you say you are to vote is racist? I can't believe people bought into this. I am over 40. I tried to buy beer the other day at BevMo. I forgot my ID. No matter how much I begged they would not sell me beer. I tried to have my friend next to me buy it for me, they wouldn't even allow my friend to buy it for me. Yet we would not call that racism! As a Cuban born and raised and now a US citizen, I must say that Reihan Salam does not know anything about the history of Cuba. The fact that he thinks that the US now has economic leverage is plain stupid. 1991 when Cuba lost all relations with the dissolved Soviet Union, the country suffered the greatest economic recession, with the embargo at its peak preventing any trade with anyone Cuba went through the process known as "Special Period". Everything was scarce, yet no one starved to death, no one lost healthcare and education, the revolution process did not fall. I know it because I lived it. It is just crazy to see this guy now saying that US has an economic leverage today to defeat the Cuban Revolution, give me a f..... break Sir.

Bill brought up Obama, and Jerrod clamored up and had to quickly make a joke about Sen. Booker for the conversation to move away from him. Jerrod's appearance on this show was a waste of time and space on the panel. I really hate to bash the guy but he was so out of place. I really hate when they have random celebrities on this show to talk about serious issues. HBO doesn't air commercials but this is almost the same thing. They bring on a guy who has nothing substantial to add to the conversation just so the network could let him plug his show.

The point is that "allowed" doesn't mean anything when there's no one to enforce standardized rules. And pretty much every country has used political and economic pressures to get more of what they want from their neighbors on the geopolitical landscape. Sometimes the power dynamics are more or less equal, some times they aren't. Bottom line, having a "right" to do X isn't really a thing when it comes to countries.

+Fiasco Do you also think and talk as fast? He doesn't have an Indian accent, but I think I may have figured out why Americans feel that the subcontinent, Indian accent is so funny. Many of these immigrants tend to retain a very thick accent in spite of their characteristic mastery of English which runs counter to what we observe in immigrants from other societies and with different languages who eventually lose their accents. Schwarzenegger may be an exception, but pretty sure he's been coached to retain his accent even as he has mastered English, and consistent with this theory, most of us think his accent is funny. Ironically, the many Americans who "don't talk as good American" as these immigrants, are the real butts of the joke.

+WesleyLocust Salam was born here so of course he wouldn't have an accent or at least one that is noticeable. Accents are hard to get rid of since you learn the best when you are very young and languages are learned at young age so transitioning to a new language and dialect at an older age is difficult that is why many immigrants have thick accents whether it be people from Indian subcontinent or Europeans (including the British) and frankly everyone. The children of those immigrants usually lose the accent. Even those immigrants who study hard to are in a formal American environment, they tend to lose their accent eventually. The Indian subcontinent accent is funny because well, it's different, they usually learned British-English and combine that with American it's a hot mess I guess. As far as I know, I don;t think I have a deep accent.
