No kidding. He is proposing the same crap that Bush did and it blew up our economy, nearly leading to a depression. How can someone be so ignorant of history that isn't a decade past? It's the $1.99 scam. They still argue that Reagan cut both taxes and US debt. He cut taxes once and spent the rest of his terms raising them. For example, you used to be able to deduct the interest you paid on your credit card debt. Reagan did away with that, which was middle class tax increase. The US debt was higher at the end of his presidency than it was at the beginning. Today he would be accused of being a RINO.

Most people don't know what "political correctness is because the definition can be conveniently changed at any moment by any moment in any given situation. Mostly the term is used to stifle and "stop" any discussion by insinuating that a person with dealing with real issues of racism, sexism, homophobia...etc is "just whining". One should DEFINE what PC means when using it in an argument, or not use it at all.

I have never been as annoyed by a Real Time episode as I was this time. None of the guests, excluding the hypnotist, knew what the fuck they were talking about. The Trump supporter could spew his bullshit unchecked with minimal and inefficient opposition and don't even get me started on the Germany thing in Overtime. This was painful and horrifying. Bill could have had at least one competent person in the panel. And if he insists on bringing on a Trump supporter, someone who could actually argue the other side competently, would be nice as well. Why do conservatives bring up countries like Venezuela when talking about socialism? Why not Denmark, or the Nordic countries? Oh, it's because they don't know the difference between democratic socialism and socialism, or even communism. Their view of the political spectrum is void of any nuance or political science.
@meekrob29
@meekrob29 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not a conservative, but maybe it's because the Nordic countries, particularly Denmark, aren't socialist, or even "democratic socialist," countries and their policies poorly represent those of Bernie Sanders. For example, Sanders supports a $15 minimum wage. There is comparatively little business regulation in Denmark and it has a lower corporate tax rate than the US does, both things Sanders would like to increase. It and the other Nordic countries rank high on indices of economic freedom. The taxes are very high, yes, but are actually significantly less progressive than the the US federal tax system. The only thing Sanders and Denmark seem to share is a fondness for a large welfare state. The thing with Venezuela is they tried to fund a large welfare state in a poor country (mostly through sale of oil) without a strong capitalist economy to support it. I would now like to ask, what is the difference between socialism and democratic socialism? If it is literally the fact that it is democratic, then Venezuela is a fair comparison, as at least Hugo Chavez was democratically elected.

meekrob29: To claim that Venezuela and Sanders is a fair comparison while Denmark/Germany and the US is not a fair comparison is laughable. Unlike Clinton, Sanders proposes a flat tax on income to fund a national health care system. A flat income tax is not particularly progressive, but it is far more progressive than a privatized system, like the current US system. Denmark also has a higher effective minimum wage than the US because trade unions set minimum level in negotiations with employers. Again, a poor understanding of this idea that "Denmark doesnt have a minimum wage, while Sanders wants $15 for the US, so Denmark and the US are nothing alike!". Any low skilled job in Denmark will get you about $20 minimum wage, 5 weeks paid vacation and lots of other benefits. Fought by unions, and Sanders is the strongest union man there is. Effective corporate taxes are not lower in Denmark than the US. All in all, its absurd to say that Venezuela has more in common with the US than Denmark or Germany. It has never been an industrialized country, its a third world country, always has been. To say that social democracies in Europe poorly represents Sanders' or even FDRs political platform is patently absurd.
@meekrob29
@meekrob29 8 жыл бұрын
I think you misinterpret several of my statements. Firstly, despite that flat tax proposed, Sanders seems fairly adamant that the tax system should be more progressive, with calls for taxes on Wall street transactions and higher taxes on the wealthy in general. On minimum wages, to me at least, there's a strong difference between the national government mandating a minimum for all workers and unions negotiating with their employers. Depending on your source, the effective corporate rate is either slightly lower or somewhat higher. Regardless the higher official rate and the paperwork necessary to avoid it is symptomatic of the overly complex regulatory body in the US that is somewhat better in Denmark and a problem likely to be compounded by Sanders. I never said US was more like Venezuela by the way, not sure where you got that. There are some similarities, of course, but, especially in light of how those Nordic countries have been moving away from the social democratic model it is wishful thinking on the part of Sanders fans to think that their plan has been done before in Denmark, Sweden, etc. and was a great success.

Want to read great literature, read a book and join a book club. Want a job: go to a blue -collar trade school ( carpentry, auto body, plumbing, etc or white-collar trade school ( xray tech, medical billing, pharmacy tech etc.). Final thought is that my parent's and grandparent's generations were able to learn at the high school level what are now learned at college. Diploma mills with lifetime debt need to stop.

The professor is well-meaning but completely full of it. I attended university in NC a few years ago, and Bill Maher is absolutely correct: the political correctness on campuses does choke free speech, and the policing of language is usually performed by the professors themselves. No female in my class found herself "oppressed" by the word "girls" until our feminist professor denounced it continuously as a "tool of of patriarchy." The mythical gender gap was pushed in just about every class (despite, or perhaps due to the fact that the vast majority of the faculty were female). Supporting traditional gender roles at all earned one a shaming (my was due to pointing out that it is more natural for mothers to stay home with the babies after birth because, I don't know, they've just gave birth, can produce milk, and their hormones drive them to want to remain as close with their newborns as possible. Nope, this was due not to millions of years of evolution but to the dreaded patriarchy. Stupid me). I actually became much more conservative after university having seen how ultra-liberals can get worked up over stupid things (like Barbie's waistline or Disney princesses) while completely ignoring truly important matters (like the real oppression of women and gays in the Middle East). I still consider myself to be a liberal moderate due primarily to economics, but it gets tougher every day to retain that classification.

the credibility of this show took a bit of a hit in my books, after last night's episode. it was all shouting, and little to no substantive discussion or level headed debate. I used to tune in to see smart people talk smart, to get educated, to hear critical thought, but lately it seems to be less and less on Real Time. And no it's not just because of the token Republican or Trump supporter being thrown into the mix. Across the board the quality just seems to have dropped for me at least. Was nice seeing Bernie last night though. And another thing, to Bill and the RT staff, can we have longer panel discussion? Didn't like last night's episode but it was only about 55 min. Noticing the interviews at the beginning of the show drag on a bit lately and get into the real meat of the discourse & arguments.

Wayne Allen Root, was incredibly frustrating to watch - not only did he interrupt nearly everyone - he had nothing based upon fact to say. The real problem is that BM & RT staff are so desperate to get someone from the right to attend that they end up with these double-plus-good duck-speakers who are very talented at consuming all the oxygen and the talking time, thus elbowing out other viewpoints - watch this on just about any panel where they've been desperate to get "balance". Of course Fox slants it in a different way and get someone from the left who cannot hold their own. They need to connect these types to lie detectors and electro-shock feedback systems to keep it all on kilter - or else, simply cut their mic.

Tyrone Power plays a sleazy opportunist carnival sideshow creep who gets big with a fake mentalist routine, courting (and fleecing) the rich and gullible. He gets too big for his britches, and eventually has an epic fall from grace, in this case ending up back at the carnival he started at, a wet brained alky circus geek, chewing the heads off of chickens.

Jerry Seinfeld is one of the comedies who says that colleges are too PC for him, but honestly I think that his humour doesn't connect with younger audiences. Not all humour is universal, some times older comedians can't find younger audiences. Bob Hope is a good example of this. As someone who has never found Jerry Seinfeld funny, I think he uses political correctness as an excuse for why some younger people don't find him funny. As for the free movement in Europe, the UK is not part of the schengen so I'm not sure why it was brought up in relation to that question. Also most of the people involved in the Paris terrorists attacks were French and Belgian citizens, so again why bring up schengen? The real issue is not schengen but that EU intelligence agencies don't share information. That is why needs to be changed.

other so called 'controversial' comics are very popular with college students. Louis C K doesn't spend all this time moaning about PC culture, he just makes funny jokes, sometimes he gets flack for them sometimes he doesn't. But Jerry Seinfeld a popular comic who finds his popularity with younger people waning, talks about it constantly. College Students are probably less likely to laugh at some "punching down, racist joke", but the likes of Sarah Silverman prove that it's possible to tackle controversial topics without being a completely dick about it and be popular. PC culture is used as an excuse by comedies who can't adapt to a younger generations different sense of humour.

I like Dilbert (author) but I think he went off the deep end when he says that Trump will win by a landslide. I think it will be close race but a saying it will be a landslide is a bit much especially seeing Trump more liberal counterpart Sanders is still trying to catch up.

Trump has an uphill battle on two fronts: 1. The white vote. Because minorities tend to vote in greater proportions for Democrats and whites constitute a shrinking proportion of the general electorate, Trump has to capture a super majority (60-75%) of the white vote for a competitive edge, which is just not possible given the shifting demographics. 2. The electoral college. Certain states are reliably blue and others are reliably red. Either candidate must secure enough electoral votes in the swing states (like Florida, Michigan, Ohio, etcetera) and Trump is not polling well with key demographic groups in those swing states (see 1) including African-Americans, Latinos and women. I like Scott Adams, and he's a smart guy. But he's not a statistician. (I'm not either, but I will quote them.)

of course there is going to be a land slide for trump, when liberals keep burying their head in the sand. You ask the queen of pc police the queen of "hard work is racist, and star wars is racist" about pc culture, and you get an answer no there is no problem. That just means trump has already won. Why do those morons think trump is so popular, its a backlash against the PC culture.

TentaclePentacle Oh Christ, I'm so tired of hearing people whine about the PC culture. Christ, hardly anyone supports the PC culture and yet Trump is one the most dislike Presidental candidates. I mean my God, Bill Burr doesn't care for Trump but are you honestly going to say with straightface that his PC? Come on, stop using the PC culture as an excuse.

I really hate people who blame all problems on one thing. The debt, the debt, the debt... at what point in history has changing just one thing ever solved everything?

Melissa is horrible to listen to... not talking about the gross speach impediment, just talking about her views.
